I don’t give Kennedy a pass because of the budget.  What state agency didn’t have to deal with budget issues.  You can still grow the university at the same time budgets were cut. A lot of his problems were optics amongst the poor decisions he made.  Sort of like our governor with budget cuts but then he is exposed with travel issues and demands for the new house.

If they're lucky. He's one of the nation's best in the areas UND needed help in. Another thing that is the norm across the nation but not in small minded N.D. When something like this becomes a  major controversy,  North Dakota becomes a laughing stock again. Same with airplane-gate (Bresciani) of a few years ago. A lot of passive aggressive back stabbing jealousy masked as humble ahh shucks populism in this region.

EDIT: Point of clarification, Kennedy never hired Horwitz initially. SMHS did.

News Flash: Higher ed enrollment, in general, is in decline.  You can surely find isolated cases of increases but generally fewer and fewer people are taking the traditional path through colleges and universities. This is why Kennedy spent so much of his time finding innovative ways to meet student needs to prepare them for the jobs of tomorrow, as well as online education growth to serve job changers, people who needed additional skill sets or training to get promoted and the thousands of on campus students who take online courses on the side to graduate faster.

UND-FB-FAN for president!!  All knowing, most aware.     He/she seems to have the answer for everything.  Although, he may want to wait until Bubba gets fired as he/she could step right in.  Unless, of course, the board from the Alerus can scoop him up to manage that entire cluster they have created. etc, etc, etc!!!!!!

There's some merit to portions of you criticism, but no one is going to be perfect, especially when making incredibly tough and unpopular decisions. There are also numerous examples where no explanation or communication was going to be enough to satisfy the group think because as whole, people react with their emotions instead of logic. Public perception wasn't going to be based on the facts, particularly when the media reporting it already had an axe to grind. 

You can describe it however you want, but in most cases, the reactions and "solutions" provided by those lobbing the criticism were laughable at best. Hell, most people probably couldn't tell you a thing Kennedy did except for cutting WIH, closing Ray Richards and bumbling the nickname process (even though he wasn't hear for the decision to drop the Sioux name, the choice of the new nickname or the choice of the new logo).

Its telling that there are leaders of multiple other higher-ed institutions that have a much higher profile than the flagship institution of the State of North Dakota who have shown so much interest in hiring MK, yet people here are busy holding a grudge 2 years later about the loss of an athletic team that no one showed up to support all while bleeding the athletic department dry.

This post is gold, and exactly what I have been saying lately.

A lot of small minded people with big mouths!  Happy for Kennedy, and I thank him for what he has done at UND.  Like @geaux_sioux wrote earlier, and I paraphrase very crudely:  "dude got amazing amount of !@#$ done, but came off as an ass sometimes to people in ND".
