Land of 10,000 Excuses.

My first visit was 1979.  I had never been called a Communist before, and certainly not as many more colorful adjectives.   Thankfully my posse included a couple guys who could serve as bona fide bodyguards.  So it was just talk.  The best part was winning the WCHA title on Saturday night - punctuated by Dave Christian's slapshot empty-netter - breaking a 12 year drought.

I remember watching Christian's empty netter on TV in Warroad, MN. What a great moment!

Only they will tell you that UND probably has never won a NC without "x" many Minnesotans.

Let's not forget that they will count kids from Roseau, Warroad, Thief River, hell probably even East Grand Forks as their own. Even those these kids grew up going to the mall and Walmart in Grand Forks.

Well those places all are in Minnesota so they would be correct. I grew up in one of those types of places went to Sioux hockey games and became a fan when I was young. I went to Grand Forks a lot like you mention but I definitely am a Minnesotan and proud of that. I'm also a Minnesota fan in every other sport besides college hockey so that probably helps. I think a lot of times when a Minnesotan mentions that a kid is from the state especially in hockey it has to deal with them playing high school hockey there and they are proud to add to the state of hockey tradition.

And we can kindly remind the Gopher faithful that their last two championships would not have happened without a kid from Grand Forks, North Dakota and another from Austria, both of whom were responsible for the game-winning goals in the respective championship games.

Good, balanced insight.

If we wanted to take the provincialism to an extreme we could say we always seem to have more players from the city of our University than Minnesota does.  Bottom line is any coach will go find players anywhere that allows him to put the best product on the ice, and that goes for every sport.  As long as you're not cheating, I don't know what the problem is with that.

I'm less optimistic.  The team loses two of the best D we've had in a long time in LaDue and Stecher, and two of the best forwards we've had in Caggiula and Schmaltz, plus other important players.  Replacing them requires everyone down the line to step up a notch, and we won't know if they are capable of it until it happens.  I think some will, and some won't, just because that's usually how it works.  Can they be there at the end?  No doubt, although you can say that about perhaps 25 teams each year.  I'll enjoy "good" or "very good" anyway, and I'll be thrilled to be wrong if "great" shows up again.

Not to mention, the uncertainty in what we'll face regarding our opponents, particularly within conference. If nothing else, they'll all be gunning for us.

I think he will have DU as #1. Guy loves DU.

Couldn't blame him if he does-I believe Danton Heinen was their only early departure. Gambrell will be back and he's dangerous. Plus, they locked Monty down in a big new contract so he's happy. DU scares me next year...under Monty the past three seasons, they've only continued to get better.

Agreed, was skeptical about Monty but IMO he's definitely proved himself as a really good coach

As much as I loved to hate the "great and powerful Gwoz" I have a lot for respect for Monty at this point. His teams have gotten better each year, he largely looked the other way during the moment of silence snafu at The Ralph instead of using it to fan the rivalry flames, and he did the right things post game at the FF and at least publically cheered for the NCHC team to win it all.  Conversely Q's coach proved why no one likes them with his post game comments.  I think DU is going to be the team to beat next year along with BU but I'm not counting us out just yet.

I'm not arguing that they're not Minnesotan, I am saying that they are local kids. UND is their local (major) college . . . we didn't poach them from UMs backyard. I do completely get "Minnesota state hockey" pride though . . . my daughter is Green Wave.

Not that anyone cares, but I'll be celebrating my New Years Eve 2k16 in Schenectady, NY watching UND beat Union! I'm dragging along some friends and family so I'll have an ok sized UND crowd with me.  Hope to see some of you there!

DU is a class program.  Kip Vanvoorhis was a Grand Forks guy, UND alum and a true Sioux fan, but I'm sure he is very proud his son chose that program.

I mean- easy to look the other way when almost everybody else on the other team basically attacks the guy that did it.

I'm originally from Schenectady! Wish I could swing a trip out there for the series. Enjoy it!

And I don't believe he was there that night and had seen and heard the UND reaction.

And to that extent, does anybody think the Ralph or NoDak Nation will have something set up so Students have a chance to go?

Also gotta love the price gouging by Minny. Take what they can get because these are probably the only two sellouts they're gonna have this year.

Any idea how a UND fan can get tickets or when they go on sale to the public?

Mid-September for single game tickets.

Their other games are 30 dollars less. Considering their product on ice, it's no wonder they can't sell tickets.

I didn't know that, so thanks. I just got the email for their Pick-your-packs this morning and those are on sale July 20th. Doubt at those prices our games will sell out until single game tickets go on sale.

So just think of how much money Lucia's hatred of UND has cost Minnesota by not playing us every year up until now.
