Not a nickname but feast your eyes on the final six candidates for the new Minnesota state flag....

The finalists favored by commission members signal a dramatic shift in imagery from Minnesota's long-standing state flag and seal, which have been criticized for decades as offensive to the state's tribal communities.

The seal, which is at the center of the state flag, shows a white settler plowing a field in the foreground while a Native American man rides on horseback into the sunset. Others have criticized the flag as poorly designed and too similar to other state flags.

Did they hire the same design firm that did UND's Hawk logo?

Hmmm Maybe Fighting Hawks isnt so bad.  From the Chicago Tribune.

As Illinois tries to move on from Chief Illiniwek, the belted kingfisher is gaining highly visible support as potential mascot for university

I'd take any name that is unique to UND over a generic hawk.

I do not understand why people think they need to change something just for the sake of change. What a waste of time and resources.

Your comment says more about you than you think.

The selected design, conceived by Andrew Prekker of Luverne, Minnesota, consists of a dark blue silhouette accented by a white eight-point North Star. Prekker’s inspiration came from other state flags recognized for their simplicity and memorability, such as Arizona, Texas, New Mexico, and Colorado. However, his primary inspiration came from Minnesota itself, its motto “L’etoile Du Nord,” meaning “star of the north,” and its rich history.

Prekker explains that each color represents a different facet of Minnesota’s identity. The white stripe symbolizes snow and winter, the green stripe signifies the state’s natural beauty and the importance of agriculture, and the light blue stripe acknowledges Minnesota’s numerous lakes, the birthplace of the Mississippi River, and its name derived from the Dakota language, describing “a place of sky-tinted water.”

Petey23 seems to have nailed this.  Someone posted a comment in the Star Tribune that the flag looks like the Jubaland and Puntland flags in Somalia.  Can't say that I can argue against that...

Flag of Jubaland

Flag of Puntland

And who would have thought it from a white guy from Laverne, MN.

"The SYCSD school board stands as a role model and blueprint for other communities fighting for their Native names and imagery," the North Dakota-basedNative American Guardians Association (NAGA) said in a statement

Five of the newcomers were elected in November after the sudden removal of the popular image in 2021 — and an effort to rewrite the region’s Native American history — spurred community anger and action.

"This movement was about erasing Native American culture and I wasn’t about to stand for it," Jennifer Henkel, a mother of three children and one of the new school board members
