The Sicatoka Posted December 20, 2021 Posted December 20, 2021 Duluth (you know who) had a FB coach that got them to a level but not beyond. He left and the next guy, first year, got Duluth a DII FB title (two in three years actually). North Dakota had a coach that got them to a level but never beyond. That coach left for PHI, and a first year guy got an NCAA DI title. Montana State had a guy get them to a level. Vigen comes in and first year he's playing in Frisco. STL was dead last at Christmas a couple years back, and new guy got them a Cup in half a season. Heck, WPG just had Paul Maurice resign on Friday. Why? His words paraphrased -> they need a new voice; he could only get them to a certain level. Sometimes guys, realized or not, are "to a level" guys. They can get you just so far. If you're lucky they move on just in time, when the environment is still ripe, and greatness happens. Stepping away from what you love is hard but often it ends up best for all. Recommend listening to the Paul Maurice presser from Friday. Maurice is a man who recognized his limitations and, well ... 3

Vigen's team will be ready for what NDSU brings. I predict NDSU will run base offense the first half (establish) and they'll try to confuse the freshman MSU QB on defense. If that works, NDSU will have a halftime lead. If it doesn't NDSU will find a play no one expected in the appendices of their playbook that'll swing momentum their way. But, again, Vigen knows all that too.

Is Sandy circa 2001 the same Sandy circa 2011 or circa 2021 in regard to coaching and game management, or did he adapt and adjust, re-invent himself?

The Sicatoka Posted December 20, 2021 Posted December 20, 2021 Up to the National Title game NDSU has lost once (@SDSU) and its next two closest games were a six-point win at home (JMU) and a six-point win on the road (UND). UND is that close. All the little things, from false starts to clock management, from assignment sharp to play calling, need to get cleaned up to get over the hump. 3

With the above mentioned short-comings cleaned up, we would all be figuring out our flights to Frisco. 1
homer Posted December 20, 2021 Posted December 20, 2021 Keep beating the !@#$ out of that horse. Not sure it’s dead yet. 4
The Sicatoka Posted December 20, 2021 Posted December 20, 2021 Willing to bet NDSU and MSU coaches are talking today and tomorrow (and the next) about "assignment sharp" and "head in the game" (false starts, etc) to their teams. Willing to bet NDSU and MSU coaches are reviewing their game situation plans (clock, play chart) more than once over the next couple weeks. One man's dead horse is the fundamentals to the guys still playing. 3

Has this been brought up a lot on this board - yes. Way more than some would prefer - also yes. However this Horse won't be dead as long as there is a real possibility of it rearing up its ugly head again next year. 3

Bison06 Posted December 20, 2021 Posted December 20, 2021 This comment will be met with significant eye rolling, fairly so, but just asking a question that also reveals my opinion on the topic. Does playing a team close or even beating another team in a single game actually indicate how close those two programs are? Is NDSU a better program than the FBS teams it beat on any given year? Was USD close to NDSU in 2015 when they beat the Bison(who eventually won the national championship) Clearly this comment is annoying and self serving, as a fan of NDSU, but I think it’s a pertinent question to ask and brought up to further the discussion.

No, by itself it does not without further examination. Understand your point, yes.
SiouxFan100 Posted December 21, 2021 Posted December 21, 2021 You have to look at the whole book of work. To the point, one game doesn’t make a season. To beat a good team and lose to everyone else doesn’t mean your program is equal to the good team that you beat. Of course there is some satisfaction in beating a good team!

It’s the details which are the difference between UND’s 2021 5-6 and lining up in Frisco in 3 weeks . Our details stink. At MSU all we had to do was take the play clock down to a couple of seconds before each snap after going up 28-17 and we win despite both of the 4th qtr fumbles. It’s sad because Bubba was good enough to assemble the team and get us to the threshold, just couldn’t cross it. Bubba is a great ambassador for UND but the chances are slim he gets it done next fall.
