And if Engelstad arena doesn’t exist, the school’s going to need to divert a helluva lot more than $345 per year to the hockey (men’s basketball, women’s basketball, and volleyball) programs just so they can find a place to play.  UNDs entire athletic department is substantially better off because of the Engelstad’s and, whether you like it or not, the ticket split arrangement.

The folks on here need to realize this ticket split agreement doesn’t exist in a vacuum.

Let's give the REA all of the football ticket revenue then.  Why not?- if it's such a good thing for the fb team we could more than double that impact.

There's also a football alumni golf event fundraiser in the Twin Cities every summer.  We should funnel all revenue from that to the REA too.

The first part, no one is going to argue with, at least logically.

The second part is definitely up for debate. There's a reason the usage agreement is supposed to be revisited and updated annually. It was originally done when UND was D2 in everything but hockey and scholarship/operating expenses for other sports were significantly lower (along with ticket sales). There has been significant changes within the athletic department yet minimal changes in the usage agreement. It was fair of Kennedy to question whether or not the current arrangement is benefiting UND's athletic department to its fullest extent, which is the stated purpose of the REA/related entities.

Good points.

Don't get me wrong, the upgrades at the REA over the last 19 years since it opened have been great.  This new scoreboard being one of the biggest and most noticeable to fans.  But you have to think that athletes from other sports feel a little second rate when they see how much money is used for hockey in an endowment specifically stated to benifit UND as a whole.  Example: when the hockey team got a 3 million dollar locker room upgrade to a locker room only 13 years old at the time while the football team uses used locker rooms that have had little upgrades in decades!!

Where do the men’s and women’s basketball teams play?  Where does the volleyball team play?  Where are the women’s soccer locker rooms?

Is Queen McGarry supposed to build her dad’s alma mater a new, free football stadium, too?

I am referring to comments that McGarry recently made regarding UND hockey vs the "rest of UND".

I am unsure of how the Betty was funded, but see that it cost around. 9.9 million dollars in 2018 dollars (per Wikipedia).  Remember, it was built without video screens, and those only appeared recently.

Ever since the "Dear Chuck" letter, UND has had their hands tied.  Some obvious benefits to UND and GF, some major problems.  (Being tied to a donor that had a Nazi party or parties is one thing that comes to mind as a problem.)

The Ralph built the basketball and volleyball teams a new arena. How much can they complain?

Locker rooms and scoreboard were majority donations. How can they complain?

"The renovation is estimated at roughly $3 million, funded by private money from the Engelstad Foundation."

Well, kind of but not really. It wasn't a donation like the REA (or scoreboard, or locker rooms, etc), the Ralph took out a loan for the construction of the BESC, which will be paid off in 2020, however it is the ticket revenue that is collected paying the loan back. That's why there wasn't much of an argument previously on the allocation of WBB, MBB and VB tickets along with hockey, it actually made sense. Still haven't figured out the the football tie-in though.

So the boys can get used to playing at that altitude. That is the reason they lost at Canisius.

GFK altitude: 843 feet
Buffalo altitude: 600 feet

Yup. A private donation. Thanks again to Kris McGarry.

I'm actually surprised Don Lemon or his other CNN clowns have not run a piece yet on Ralph's anti-Semitic, white privileged money that funds a sport that is predominantly played by white "Christian" males....who are also probably racist for still wearing apparel with the Sioux logo on it.

Is anyone preventing a privately funded upgrade of the football team's locker room like the men's hockey locker room upgrade was privately funded?

What's stopping siouxperman8's football golf fundraisers from privately funding the football locker room renovation?

Geez guys, the Nevada daughter of a 1940's UND hockey goalie can only fund so many athletic initiatives at a publicly funded school in North Dakota.

All of my comments are regarding the $2m from the REA funds for the scoreboard. Those are not private funds and not locker room related.

$345k/year would go a long ways toward that.

We just want to get what the fb team earns and not leave it up to REA and Chris to decide how much of the fb $$ to give back to the fb program after taking what they want for an REA scoreboard.

I heard the next upgrade will be all virtual fans in the upper bowl. You will be able to watch the games from home and they will project your likeness into a seat.

The NBA is pretty much already doing this, sans the holograms.

Lol. Fill me in. What's the contract say is the minimum? Oh wait there is non.

REA aims for $500,000.

Or in layman's terms. If average attendance decreases by 500 a game,

"Sorry, no $500,000 "profit" this year."

"At the end of each year, REA funds a capital reserve fund for extraordinary repairs, maintenance, and building enhancements as well as an operating reserve fund to cover unanticipated operating expenses, and then allocates the balance of its annual net income to UND athletics. The entities aim to make an annual minimum deposit of $500,000, which is also consistent with previous usage agreements.http://www.grandforksherald.com/news/education/4462768-und-ralph-engelstad-arena-reach-new-multiyear-usage-agreement

Does anyone know if the new usage agreement was actually released anywhere?  Can it be looked up online like the tax filings?  I am perfectly fine with the Ralph installing the new scoreboard, if the current AD was also on board with the decision, but I think it would also be helpful if we had all of the facts, as the sentence that I put in bold can clearly be interpreted in multiple ways.   Also, huge thanks to the Engelstads for the 4 million donation.

The old Engelstad Arena produced 5 National Titles, the Hyslop Sports Center saw 3 women's national titles. I think housing them wouldn't have hurt the programs. Since 2001 when the REA opened, only 2 National Titles in UND's major sports, 2001-Football and 2016-hockey.

So many ungrateful people on here that fail to see the snowball effect of having use of REA.  Not only that, REA will be UND's and UND's alone once the 30 years is up.

Because REA exists, UND has never had to replace the old [original] Ralph Engelstad Arena, which would have been a necessity by now.  Had UND been able to hang on for an additional ten years or so from the time it was replaced, they likely would have built something similar to what Duluth has in Amsoil Arena, which was built in 2010 for $80M.  UMD only paid for 12% of the arena.  The majority of the rest was paid for by the state and through taxes.  Would you rather have REA or Amsoil Arena?  Had UND done the same deal, they'd be on the hook for $9.6M....that's a lot of $375k football ticket revenue seasons.

With that said.  The arena, being a gift (albeit not entirely free) has saved UND many millions, kept many people living in Grand Forks after the flood, allowed 12k fans to enjoy games all winter long, and give people with ties to UND something to be proud of no matter where in the globe they are.  Not to mention, what about all the revenue hockey generates for all sports through the sale of merchandise?  The amount of revenue REA generated in that department funds all athletic programs.

The football ticket revenue is a small price to pay for all of the additional money the arena has earned on top of the money it has saved the University.

But, apparently we should say thanks for nothing to the Engelstads....then maybe all of our rich football alums will step up to the plate and donate their share to carry the weight of UND athletics.

It is possible to be grateful for the gift that the Engelstads gave and also feel like the fb team is getting shorted by giving $375k to the REA to do as they please with.  That money could make a big difference for the fb program.  We just posted a job for an assistant fb coach at $40k/year and you don't realize that the program on a shoestring budget?

All of the costs you mention above that we avoided are all hockey related.  Many on here care about our other programs too.  You talk about $9.6m in costs avoided like it is a big number - and it is.   You also dismiss $6m for a new scoreboard as trivial.  I for one see a $6m scoreboard as an extravagance that isn't needed at this time and figure the $2m used for it from REA would have been better off going back to the athletic department for other uses.

How about all the rich Big A HG guys step up to the plate and donate their share to carry the weight of UND athletics?  You had nothing to do with the Engelstad donations but seem to count that as your part of supporting UND.  Why not step up yourself and why single out fb alums?   I give my share every year and it isn't earmarked for fb but goes for all sports.
