The funny thing is, their relative lack of success probably wouldn't be held against them as much if they wouldn't act like they were a national power or trot out the Olympians excuse every time. The other was low attendance at women's hockey games. Both of these are a consequence of the newness of women's hockey programs. Any new program needs time to build. UND was impatient. - Yes, be patient while mandated budget cuts stare you in the face. How many years does the program need while chugging along with a burn rate of $2 million/year (or more telling, $80K/student athlete) before UND can address problems that is required by the legislature to handle right now, not when it's convenient? Their achievement brought UND a lot of attention — worth more than all the advertising time that the Up River Rivals at NDSU paid for during the Olympic television broadcasts. It's too bad that those promising hockey players who heard about UND's program won't have a chance to play here. - All for taking shots at NDSU at any chance I can, but that "exposure" doesn't actually pay bills. I highly doubt UND got $2 million dollars of real, measurable exposure out of the Olympics, let alone the $8 million that would be needed to justify a once in 4 years event. There aren't exactly a ton of prospective students watching the women's games for Finland, Norway, Sweden, etc, which are the teams all but two of UND's Olympians are playing for. Let's go for gold again. Let's bring back women's hockey. - Let's not. Unless of course as the former editor and publisher of the Herald, you happen to have a significant chunk of the $60 million endowment needed just lying around and are willing to contribute. Congrats to the twins. They finally won their Olympic gold and it's a great achievement of which they and others should be incredibly proud of. However continuing to tie that to UND bringing back WIH is nonsensical at this point. Would their results have been any different had they stayed at Minnesota for their final 3 years instead of coming to UND? They would still be the first Grand Forks natives to win gold medals.
