I think one must also look at the timing of the kerfuffle he was responding to in his texts. Were they while he was away at the funeral when the blow up occured? Its also plausible that he didnt have all the details of the media rights deal so he wouldnt of had the foresight to look at the immediate and long range repercussions. Were more stipulations put in to place after the original consultation so he would have been blindsided by the whole thing and then trying to do damage control without knowing all the details?. Hence the inappropriate texts.

Some of the texts weren't appropriate regardless of context, which is DB admitted and said they were in bad taste. As to the rest of it, that was my point: why was he supposedly led to believe the conditions were known to all those who bid and they were common around the country when neither is true and who led him to believe that? Seems like that person would have some explaining to do for their actions since that bad information is a portion of what is causing DB's issues.

I hate to defend Bresciani and the ag college as the media policy was totally asinine, but Port's tactics are going to eventually make it next to impossible to attract talented applicants for positions at both UND and NDSU or any of the states university systems.  He isn't by any means an unbiased journalist and primarily uses his platform with the Forum and his personal blog to put a greasy thumb on the scale for those who wish to destroy higher education and primary education in the state of ND.   He has the narrow minded opinion that since it requires zero education or critical thinking skills to run his blog, that no one else should require any form of higher learning either.   He's an outright fool at best and a shameless hypocrite at worst.

If he or another reporter subjected the ND legislature and the governor's office to 1/10th the scrutiny that he subjects higher Ed in ND too, the state could finally start to weed out the extreme levels of corruption at the legislative level, primarily coming out of Al Carlson's office.  Port won't do that though since he's Al's lapdog, and it's pretty ridiculous that the Forum would employ him and give him another platform for what's essentially propaganda.

Port is nothing compared to reporters/bloggers in other states.

Dont most reporters when investigating go to the supposed source for verification and or to get the other side of the story before coming o a conclusion and then reporting it? Or are they supposed to report ALL of the information and let the readers come to there own conclusion from the facts presented? Or is journalistic integrity  a thing of the past  and tabloid journalism  now the  new norm?

He tried contacting DB for a comment and his office referred them to the original statement he released last week. That's not on Port, he tried to get the verification you wanted. What more do you think he should have done?

Asked Friday night for comment from Bresciani on whether the texts show he initially supported the rules, NDSU spokeswoman Sadie Rudolph provided this statement: “If you refer back to the statement we released on Tuesday, it does indicate that President Bresciani was disappointed when he learned the facts surrounding the issue. His opinion did evolve and so our statement from Tuesday does address your question.”

Port is an opinion guy. There's  a difference between what he does and the kind of journalist you're describing. Love it or hate it, he represents a brave new world of media that is much different than that of yesteryear. They essentially do the same thing, just with a lot more opinion and they tend to cut out the need to get both sides of an issue. That is one of the major inflexibilities that puts dinosaur journalists at such a disadvantage to opinion bloggers like Port. He is able to break news and not follow the same strictures and conventions of traditional news organizations. Best of both worlds for him, and usually for the public, because the public doesn't have to wade through all of inane PR bullsnot that comes when a journalist "gets both sides" just because.

Thank you for that insight.

Thanks. I had missed that.

DB doesn't seem to want to talk to anyone....the only official thing so far he has said to the public is the original press release where he said he was disappointed about the media guidelines. So far avoiding any questions or interviews.

At least you left your political view and bias out of this post...???

Port's tact and how he conveys his message is typically an issue.

However, the factual info he has provided here and in the past on other topics is not, regardless of who is being called out on the floor.

It's funny when the jokes just write themselves. The newest idea to save DB is a petition! Luckily, this one carries no weight so the anonymous and unverifiable "signatures" won't get anyone in trouble this time around.

Still curious why there hasn't been more made of why DB was led to believe by someone within the athletic department that the media restrictions were known before the bids and that they were common, when neither is true.

If someone was truly Pro UND and Anti NDSU wouldn't it be in UND's best interests to have Bresciani stay on at NDSU and get steamrolled in Bismarck during the legislative session or does he take the whole NDUS down with him?

I would agree with this, let him stay on and keep digging the proverbial hole deeper.

Took a little longer than expected but in a letter to the Forum, this "witch hunt" is UND's fault.

http://www.inforum.com/opinion/letters/4091597-letter-forum-conducts-witch-hunt-against-ndsu-president

This letter is full of exactly what you'd expect, I almost feel like Hawk Haakenson helped him write it:

  • Claims that this all has to do with a few text messages
  • Wants people to call for resignations of employees at a private company and because he apparently doesn't understand that NDSU is a public entity and there is a difference
  • Rails against agendas and witch hunts and then declares one should be started against "anti-NDSU agenda from the mostly UND alumni legislatures"
  • Claim the legislature is mostly UND alumni. Rough count from the legislature site shows the House has 25 UND alums (27%) and the Senate has 8 (17%) for a total of 33 (23% of ND legislature). NDSU has 17 alums in the House (18%) and 18 in the Senate (38%) for a total of 35 (25% of the ND legislature). That does count two people being in both categories as they have degrees from both schools. That is also before you take into consideration that 3 of the 7 members of the SBoHE have NDSU ties (actually 4 of 8 now that the student member is an NDSU student).
  • Claims the FCC bid was a complete joke even though it hasn't been actually made public and also claims that it would somehow be illegal if the contract had a step-down clause if NDSU didn't win 8 games claiming it is threatening them to win or pay up.

He probably shouldn't have challenged them to print the letter. "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt."

In fact I'll be shocked if this letter gets printed or acknowledged by the all-powerful FCC!

I signed the peition. It would be great if NDSU kept him. I'm hoping the saga is just beginning...."Bresciani claims legislator denied ndsu funds due to "personal issues.""

Exactly. I liken this with a political scandal as the more they talk the deeper they dig themselves. So I say, keep on truckin' Brescani.
