geaux_sioux Posted August 2, 2012 Posted August 2, 2012 I'm just basing it on what I have seen from both QB's live and on TV. I'm not going to trash anybody, and I think we just disagree on this. It's just my arm-chair opinion. Marcus is the better athlete and has the better arm, no doubt. I'm just wondering why Marcus couldn't pass up Joey on the depth chart in the past 1.5 years if he was the better QB who had been in the system longer? Have the coaches been missing the boat? One thing I will say is that I respect Hendrickson a ton. He has been moved around a couple of times from different positions and has done whatever has been asked of him. Team player for sure. Plus he's a northern Minnesota kid that I like. We also need him to step up now more than ever and I hope he succeeds in whatever capacity is asked of him. We might end up needing him if Hanson gets hurt. Again, I'm not saying Bradley was the savior or anything, but he was certainly an extra lifeline for the offense this year in case of injuries. His problem was maturity. He also was too excitable like most young qbs. But up until last spring I've heard his maturity level was not on par. Quote

JohnboyND7 Posted August 2, 2012 Posted August 2, 2012 What sucks is we are an injury away from having to pull a redshirt. Technically, until they set foot on the field...they don't lose the redshirt yes? Quote
Irish Posted August 2, 2012 Posted August 2, 2012 I don't know how he could think it would be "his time" when he was benched the year before and pretty much showed nothing during his time on the field. The writing was on the wall when he was benched mid-season. Agreed - Although I never like to see players leave, if he couldn't beat out Goska, it makes you wonder. Quote
UND92,96 Posted August 3, 2012 Author Posted August 3, 2012 The quarterback recruiting in the five or six years after Landry signed has seemingly been cursed. I think this last recruiting class will pan out, but with Demler, Comes, Bradley and at least one year with no qb signees at all, it just hasn't worked out. If it weren't for Goska's late season emergence as a fifth-year senior, it would be even more glaring. Quote
tjbison Posted August 3, 2012 Posted August 3, 2012 At least you guys haven't had a Mertens yet............... Quote
Wilbur Posted August 3, 2012 Posted August 3, 2012 A very good point made about having to pull a redshirt. Today's announcement makes the former tar heal the starter. The coaches have a big decision to make, because I'm betting Joe is the second best QB on the team....is he #2 on the depth chart, or do they want to protect that year and make him off limits to this season. I will withhold all opinion of the new qbs until I see them in person. That said it will be quite the situation to keep an eye on. Maybe the first time that the battle for third string qb will ever be exciting Quote
geaux_sioux Posted August 3, 2012 Posted August 3, 2012 geaux_sioux do you go to the practices? When I can Quote
CMSioux Posted August 3, 2012 Posted August 3, 2012 Best wishes to Joey - if being the giarranteed starter was that important to him best he move on, too bad he had to wait until the last minute - seems like a decision made without much thought for the long-term - now he's looking for a team and any team that brings on a quarterback this late is in for some player controversy. For 99 percent of players at this level it's about getting an education and parparing for the next level in life - not sure that was the priority here - just my opinion - no ill will to him - best wishes Quote
Teeder11 Posted August 3, 2012 Posted August 3, 2012 Anyone going to be out at Memorial this morning at 9:15 a.m. ish to watch the first practice? I think I am going take long morning break and check out some drills. #hardup-for-somefootball 1 Quote

Teeder11 Posted August 3, 2012 Posted August 3, 2012 Not sure about that one. I can check on that. I think I heard their first practice in full pads is Aug. 8 (Wednesday). Quote

Granted he was Freshman walkon, but still an FBS transfer. http://missoulian.com/sports/college/montana/football/source-stanford-qb-brzeczek-headed-to-griz/article_ef1e20ca-dd14-11e1-b12f-0019bb2963f4.html Quote
bincitysioux Posted August 3, 2012 Posted August 3, 2012 I think this hurts for the future. My hope was that Bradley would be the #2 this year, get another year in the system, and be the starter next season. That would make Mollberg the likely starter in 2014 as a sophomore with two years of experience in the system and 3 years of eligilibity left. Having a different quarterback every single season is not ideal. 2 Quote
The Sicatoka Posted August 3, 2012 Posted August 3, 2012 Montana's transfer has as many collegiate passing attempts as Bartels or Mollberg. Quote
UNDColorado Posted August 3, 2012 Posted August 3, 2012 Holy smokes it's finally football season folks! Can whoever attends practice give us fans from afar your thoughts on what you have seen? That would be greatly appreciated! Quote

Popular Post Teeder11 Posted August 3, 2012 Popular Post Posted August 3, 2012 Congrats to true feshman Kodee Varner, running back from Baker, Mont., for winning the 2012-13 "Sioux Run." Don't have any more specifics other than he won it. Ok. First practice in the books. Some great. some ok. some not so good. QBs: Hanson was solid and really picked the DBs apart for the most part toward the last of the light contact drills with the defense. It wasn't the DBs' fault either. The #1 offense looked good. Hendrickson was shakey at the beginning, picked it up in the middle of practice, but then fell apart by the end of practice. The secondary had him baffled, forcing him to keep the ball too long so all he could do was tuck it in and run or take a sack (what would have been a sack on game day). He was inconsistent on throws, many way wide of target. Only first practice, though. Mollberg looks like the real deal. For a true freshman, he looks confident, poised in the pocket and can run an offense. His throws were good and he got the ball off in under three seconds of snap. Bartles looked like a true freshman should -- at first. He was off and seemed overwhelmed. But by the middle of practice he found his legs and his arm and was hitting recievers with much better consistency. Of note: he has got a booming distinctive voice under center -- unmistakable -- I can see him drawing many a DL offsides in the future. Jake Hanson -- got limited snaps which surprised me. He looked like someone who went from North Dakota Class B to NCAA Division I. Not a criticism. Just an observation. He will get a baptism by fire this fall. WR: The Good: Hardin, Jameer Jackson, Tyre Ivery and Townsend. The Bad: None The rookies: Golladay, though long, thin and a bit stringy, has excellent hands and runs good routes. He impressed. Needs to bulk up a bit. Fletcher and Oliver also were noticable and had very few, if any drops, that were their fault. Of Note: R.J. McGill did not practice (didn't appear injured, but may be nursing something minor) Hamstring injury per Tom Miller's excellent sideline reporting. DBs: All looked ok. new Juco transfers at safety were good and but did nothing spectacular to stand out -- maybe that's a good thing. Messaureau had the lick of the day ( as much contact as you can dish out without pads on) when he broke up a pass by leveling, I think it was Ivery, to the ground on a crossing pattern toward the end of the day. This group is still a work in progess. Still too early to give a real good assessment. RB: Nothing earth shattering. Jer Garman has bulked up noticeably but appears to have not lost speed. Shaugabay had some nice runs and looks to pick it up with the experience he got late in games last year. LBs: Miles Jablonski looks like he's in tip-top shape and ready to tear it up on Saturday. OL: Kleason was still on crutches at practice. Could miss first month of the season, according to Herald's Tom Miller. DL: Mike Edwards, E.J. Welch, Kyle Woodsmall are massive beasts on the line, especially Welch and Edwards. They will be players to keep an eye on, I think. It won't be hard to spot them. That's all for now. 9 Quote
