Fetch
Hey Goon I drove thru a few places out around Mott (Hettinger to Richardton) that had hundreds of pheasants along both sides of the road (trying to find food & gravel where the snow plows scrape the side of the hwy) - I have never seen so much snow on the level, all the way across ND - it sure is pretty to see, out there (even the Buttes are heavily snow covered) but how anything can survive (especially pheasants) is beyond me - I'm sure many did not make it & what have, are just barely hanging on people out there in general don't like them - they really raise heck with grilles / windows / rear view mirrors etc. & man they are dumb - But I bet smarter than a gopher

I think it's going to be rough year for ditch chicken's. I concentrated on ducks and geese this season. I only went out pheasant hunting once last year and I didn't shoot any. I still believe that they are still smarter than the rodents.
dmksioux
It appears as though William and Mary has decided on a new mascot. The Griffin...they are keeping their nickname of "Tribe." A group of griffins is actually known as a tribe. http://tribeathletics.com/story.php/10197/
xI Hammer Ix
http://forum.siouxsports.com/index.php?s=&...st&p=442584 I took out the image to save space on the boards, but that's pretty cool. Add a mean snarl and make him look buff that would be amazing.

GeauxSioux
Almost a year hold but it pretty much holds for me. What I don't want from a new nickname. As some else mentioned previously, I can get behind a lot of different ideas/nicknames, but let's do it right and not settle on some lame nickname. Let's start with what we don't want. Well for me anyway... No fish, no rodents, no birds. No meteorological phenomenon. No ag products. No pop culture names (ie Raptors). What I do want. Something unique, bold and forceful. No, not "Force of the North".

NorthDakotaHockey
If a name, I am still partial to "The Mighty Soo" in honor of the great Soo Line Railway. Now wouldn't that frost some people's hind ends? Let's Go Soo!! Big train horn that throws the chill into anyone who has ever been hit by a locomotive. Big steaming locomotive as the logo. Maybe with a face like an angry Thomas the Tank. It all works. It has probably been suggested before. I have mentioned this in another thread but it is such a damned great idea that it needs to be touted.

redwing77
GO FIGHTING CAVALRY! The possibilities are ENDLESS with this! Be sure to have NO semblence of Native American imagery or ANYTHING. No feathers, no NA symbols at all. Just straight Fighting Cavalry. I say we tear down the statue in front of the Ralph, the "Sioux" signs, and as much Sioux statues as we can get removed easily off the campus, drive them down to the SR Rez, and dump them in the middle of the reservation. It's theirs. Then take all of the unsold Fighting Sioux merchandise, destroy them or make them in some way unrepairable (without burning them or marring the word "Sioux") and dump them in the SR reservation too. Then just leave. Move on. The silver lining is that UND and UND students no longer have to hear about how we should treat NA people any better than they treat each other. They no longer have special status. And all the outreach is no longer a necessity. I'm not sponsoring cutting NA programming, but now that the nickname is on the way out, the NA students don't have to be treated any better than the African American, Asian American, Hispanic-American, or any other ethnic American race. If I led any of the other ethnic American student organizations or outreach programs, I'd petition and start activism on campus stating that, now that the nickname is gone, NA students are being treated more preferrentially than African American, etc. ethnicities. Then dillute the funding and reduce the NA student organizations and programs to "just another ethnic program." As for the cheers, meh. Most of the cheers we did in the old arena don't involve the nickname anyways. And most of them are forgotten or not allowed anyways even with the nickname. That chapter is gone. I just hope that the Administration doesn't pull an SCSU and paint over the Sioux logo on the pictures in the concourse.
7>4
Do you really think UND is going to pay the $2M plus that it takes to strip the Ralph? No way. Even if they did, the Ralph could tell them to piss off since it is a private enterprise. What leverage does UND have? What, they gonna play their home games at Purpur Arena? I bet the Ralph stays just the way it is, emblazed in the proud tradition of the Fighting Sioux. What is lost, the chance to host a regional every 10 years? Let the NCAA keep sending it to Fort Wayne and playing in front of half empty arenas.

GeauxSioux
HAHAHA. I just randomly ran across this on the internet. IT HAS MY VOTE!!! (I thought we could all use some humor right now so I hope that nobody finds this hostile or abusive) Randomly ran across it on the internet, huh? I honestly don't feel the pain that many on the board are feeling. I've been hopeful that the name would stay. It will be hard to replace one of the best names and THE best logo in college sports, but I knew it was coming. Now, we need turn our energy toward getting another great name/logo. I've been reading about protesting and not letting it die. The toothpaste is out of the tube. It's over. Don't let the sourness of this negative step stick too long or you will be left out of the next positive step, finding a new name and logo. If you let the people who ended the last name dictate the new name because you couldn't let the old name go, you will have only yourself to blame. The response I received.... Canadian Pacific would be pleased to hear "Mighty Soo" shouted from the rafters of the Ralph Engelstad Arena. We would have to have put together a license agreement for the use of this word mark. However, for many, I hear there is considerable attachment to the "Fighting Sioux" name. Please keep me posted on your efforts.
dakotadan
Great comments GeauxSioux. And yes, it was randomly. haha. I actually just googled Rough Riders and it popped up under the images. I have to throw my vote towards Rough Riders. It is not a generic animal, it has a great ring to it. A strong and proud looking logo could be designed (the new logo could actually keep a similar profile to the one we currently have). And it has such a great connection to the state. NorthDakotaHockey
A few months back I emailed Canadian Pacific regarding the use of the SOO name. The response I received.... Interesting. I knew that I had heard this idea some time back. As for the poster who is concerned about having to "explain" it to opposing fans, there is no need. Has anyone ever explained why the Gophers are the Gophers, or the Badgers are the Badgers? Let 'em figure it out. I suppose CP would want a small ransom for the use of the name. It will likely never happen. It would be a good poke at the so-called activists, who must now be packing their bags and following the free sandwich wagons off to their next so called "cause" in pursuit of social justice.
