I agree. If we're talking a major conference then home court isn't as important since those conferences usually send several at-large teams to the ncaa tourney. The Big Sky, however, typically (if not always) only gets the conference tourney winner in. I like the drama of a tournament rather than just sending the regular season winner but the regular season winner in a fairly low-level mid-major conference should have an overwhelming advantage in the tournament to make the regular season relevant. I assume the regular season champ would still get a bye so that's some advantage but I think the home court advantage is pretty huge in a one and done scenario. On the other hand a trip to Vegas to watch UND would be pretty sweet!

They do. We just give more because our GDP is much larger than that of those countries combined. Most countries give what they can after a world crisis. The US received aid from impoverished countries after 9/11. The world is full of generous and wonderful people.

Over the past week or so I've seen a few debates around the value of a hockey championship compared to other accomplishments in college athletics. One argument the anti-hockey crowd (NDSU trolls *clears throat*) is that there are only 59 teams in d1 college hockey so winning it all isn't a big deal. I'm going to discredit this with one simple point: there are 32 or less teams in every major professional team sport in the country. Therefore, by stating a college hockey NC is meaningless using the "only 59 teams" logic, it is implied that every professional championship is even more meaningless. If one believes this to be true then one is living under a rock; how many zeroes come after the first comma in the Super Bowl profit value? Only 32 teams. How could it possibly matter?

I seem to recall a certain abrasive poster on this site saying in another thread that he had tickets in section 126? I could be remembering incorrectly though.

At any rate...this thread is supposed to be about pwr so I digress. What do the 0, 1 and 2 loss pwr forecasts look like going into this weekend?

Take it easy, friend. The fact is I may have over simplified but your examples still prove my point. In 2007 the HEA had five teams in and still were only represented in 3 regionals. It took the WCHA getting six teams in to gain representation in four conferences and they really had no choice since there were three 2 seeds among those six teams so they have to be in three regionals. That was supposed to be my follow up exception in my reply to my own post but, as you can see, nothing showed up but the quoted text. I believe my point is valid because I've seen too many instances when the WCHA had 4+ teams in the tourney and still landed in two or three regionals. Had a looked it up I would have seen that there were exceptions but I was speaking, or rather typing, from general observations. Nothing to get too tangled up over though. I mean "so tired of..."? It can't be that big a deal. Can it?

This is dead on. As long as there are at least three teams from one conference in the tourney two of those teams will be in the same regional. The committee definitely tries to avoid creating the potential that more than two teams make the FF from one conference. The only way a conference will be represented in three regionals is if that conference gets five or more teams in the tourney.

I've been following this forum for ten years and I think this is actually pretty much par for the course. That's why I haven't posted much in the past few years. Overall, though, this is still the best site for everything UND hockey. I'm ok with skimming over the banter; or occasionally joining in if I'm feeling frisky. The ignore feature has worked for me over the years if you're fed up with a specific poster.

If this your attitude why do you even follow the team? It doesn't sound like you're enjoying this great season. It sounds like you're just waiting for them to fail. Given your perspective you will never find a college hockey team, or coach, to back. They all have to deal with the chaos of the NCAA tourney. Getting there is step one and Hak has never missed it.

Who started this again? This team is on the rise right now and they just need to keep doing what they've been doing for the past two months in order to position themselves for the big dance. Once the tourney starts anything can happen. Hell, we had a Quinnipiac vs. Yale championship last year! Let me say that again: Quinnipiac vs. Yale championship. Can't you bummer inducing folks at least try to enjoy the present, filled with all its excitement and mystery? If we don't win it all this year, which is statistically the case for every single team in the nation, then you can get all over-the-top-reactionary and bring this topic back to life. We only get one season a year. This one's exciting. Your whole sense of being would likely benefit from a dose of "sit back and enjoy".

The greatest college hockey teams in the history of D1 NCAA hockey still lost about 1/4 to 1/3 of their games. That's why a best-of-three is preferred. The regular season is a five month grind of ups and downs. Getting to the tournament is a huge accomplishment. The one and done format minimizes the challenge of getting to the tournament by putting great teams in a position where they can get eliminated simply by running into a goalie on the best night of his life. Hockey fans know that, more than any other sport, any team can win on any given night. Best-of-three in the first round and, preferably, the first two rounds will usually make for a stronger frozen four field. I already did the work to prove this point using the NHL in another post a couple years ago so I'm not going to duplicate that effort (feel free to investigate yourself). Essentially, though, using the Stanley Cup playoffs as an example I clearly demonstrated that the better team usually wins in a best-of-seven series but only wins a little more than 50% of the time in the first game of the series. This current format ignores the reality of the sport. Best-of-three is a much more logical option for hockey.

As a die-hard UND fan it pains me to say this but if we played NDSU in any of the past few years we'd likely get smoked.

Although the choice of words used in the post to which you responded did lack any element of tact it's pretty ironic that you'd call anybody out in respect to their views of your team while simultaneously posting on their team's fan site. I mean, let's face it, if you actually take the time to go to another team's fan site, create an account, peruse the message board for any negative posts against your team and respond to those posts you're not exactly putting yourself in a position to judge anybody else's obsession or jealously or whatever you want to call it in respect to your team. If the post to which you replied was on your team's fan site then that would be different. As it is though... Just sayin'.

I tried to find some posts on this thread related to the Big Ten ban on playing FCS teams and the potential impact that new regulation could have on getting the UND / NDSU rivalry going but I couldn't find anything on that topic in the past 15 pages of posts so I apologize if I'm bringing up a conversation that was already had. The most common reason I've seen given by NDSU fans for not wanting to start the rivalry game back up is that it would mean losing a week that could be scheduled against an FBS team for a big pay day. Not only is that the most common reason I've seen but it's also the most logical from an administrative standpoint. Now that NDSU will no longer be able to play Big Ten teams do you think they'll be more likely to schedule OOC FCS teams or do you think their primary focus will turn to finding non-Big Ten FBS teams to play? If NDSU decides the Big Ten ban on playing FCS teams means they will schedule more OOC FCS teams is there any reason to believe that scheduling UND as one of those OOC FCS teams every year wouldn't be a top consideration?

I remember that post as well. If I remember correctly there were a couple instances where BC somehow got to play close to home while other teams who were seeded higher had to travel relatively long distances. That doesn't surprise me though. The east coast markets college hockey a lot better than does the midwest. My father-in-law is from California and he was blown away when I showed him how dominant the midwest teams have been in the national tournament over the past 25 years compared with the east coast teams. Not being much of college hockey fan, or a hockey fan in general for that matter, he always believe the east coast schools were by far the dominant teams in college hockey because of the coverage they get.

It is kind of a cheat I think but, yes, it would still be considered regional. DirecTV is able to carry local channels within their sports tier and broadcast them nationally over their satellite infrastructure. Think NESN and YES. Those are both local channels in their home markets but you can watch them on DirecTV if you pay for the sports tier.

My expression of knowledge may be outplaying my actual knowledge but, yes, I do realize there are many points along a data packet path where bottlenecking can occur regardless of the speed and reliability of the data's origin and destination. I also imagine If there are issues with the stream that the carrier will address them or risk losing viewers and, hence, profits.

Oh yeah. I forgot Midco isn't just broadcasting the feed they are actually delivering the feed so it makes sense that if CBS is bringing their own equipment when they carry a game then Midco would be completely out of the picture for those games.
