Comparing the number one recruited QB in the country to a backup freshman QB at San Diego State. My point is there are people on this board that think this kid is the savior and will walk on water. Let's wait and see as there is a reason he is moving down levels. I'm not saying he'll walk on water...but he is likely one of the most physically gifted QB's to ever step foot on campus. Does that translate into All American accolades...of course not! But, for an obviously talent deficient roster an influx of athletes that can potentially help right away either on the field or pushing others will be much appreciated. Just because you are on the roster doesn't mean you have a divine right to a spot. Playing time is earned...and coaching seats warm up too quickly to not put the best players on the field (or find better players if the ones you have aren't good enough to win at a high level). I wasn't a huge fan of the Schmidt hire...but he's doing what needs to be done with the roster IMO and I'm coming around on things... 2 Quote

Somehow it got worse after he left... And to add to that...I was in the camp that an outside hire would be a nice breath of fresh air into the program. There were a couple of regional candidates that I liked better that I feel like are on an upward trajectory and would have had an opportunity to be great. I think a lot of people connotate Eric Schmidt the legendary player with an assumption that he'll automatically succeed as head coach at UND...and I've seen that not be the case quite often. It seems to me that the top decision he's made as a coach was hitching his wagon to Kalen DeBoer...which was a great decision! I think he's been a helluva position coach...but the jury is still out in my mind on his ability as a head coach given his history as a coordinator. That said...I'm glad he recognizes that the talent level has been deficient roster-wide (with obvious bright spots). It gives me hope that he can get the job done. Next will be his external staffing hires... Quote

forksandspoons Posted December 26, 2024 Author Posted December 26, 2024 Do we hear about the defensive staff by tomorrow? Hoping Schmidt is still on the hunt for some D1 defensive linemen in the portal in the meantime. Yes, a new defensive scheme will be in place, but could use a LB with experience as well. UND lost a good amount to graduation this year Quote

Hoping that he can parlay what he has learned and the connections he has made to put together a top staff and roster. Others had head coaching experience but not at the FCS level or above. It is a tradeoff and a bit of a crap shoot either way. 3 Quote

These types of transfers don't always pan out. I remember NDSU a few years back got a kid from VA Tech that was a dumpster fire. Hoping he isn't Quincy Vaughn 2.0. Well, just speculating. He was recruited by the previous staff and Brady Hoke retired and the new coach brought in new staff after what would have been his redshirt season. Not sure how different the offensive philosophy from one coach to the new staff but may be a factor. Quote

Devils Posted December 27, 2024 Posted December 27, 2024 This thread reminds me of the time I saw Phil Martelli speak in 2004 or so. He was the longtime basketball coach at St. Joseph's in Philadelphia and they were a #1 seed that year and made the elite 8. He won many coach of the year honors that year and he said in the talk I saw "do you think I just figured out how to coach this year, that this was the best job I've ever done as a coach, that's bs." His point was he had great players (mostly Jameer Nelson and Delonte West who both had successful NBA careers) that year and it all came together. Coaching is important, but put any coach somewhere with little talent on the team and it will be a struggle. 4 Quote

AJS Posted December 27, 2024 Posted December 27, 2024 For those not aware, we are in the middle of a "dead period" for recruiting, which is from Dec.23 to Jan. 5. No in-person contact with recruits. 2 Quote
