Anyone see the irony in the coronavirus checkpoints on US and State highways by the Native Americans in SD? Seems be an issue between them and Gov. Noem. A Sioux tribal chairman was quoted..."We will not apologize for being an island of safety in a sea of uncertainty and death". Excuse my as I wipe my coffee that I spit out onto my phone when I read that.

Ironic since this is coming from a group of citizens, Native Americans, that in no way shape or form has for decades cared about the public health of its own people. Diabetes, HTN, alcoholism, drug abuse, child abuse, domestic violence...just to name a few are rampant on reservations yet the coronavirus is what's going to kill them en masse in SD? Since we are all about "science and data" in today's world Native Americans are 2x as likely to become diabetic than Caucasians. 2/3 of kidney failure in Native Americans is from diabetes just to give you some quick data.

BTW for the record SD has 39 total deaths to date due to the coronavirus.

Political grandstanding by the tribal chairman aside, they probably do need to put more effort into prevention there due to some of the issues you point out (diabetes, HTN, etc.) and the substandard medical care available on the reservations.

Given the health issues with that demographic (as noted above), and many more folks who would be deemed "at risk," it does make some sense to take a more aggressive approach in those communities than others.  Also factor in the cultural status of the elders in that community, and many more multi-generational households.

The "island of safety" quote is pure hyperbole, but it does make sense that the reservations would be an area that could be hit harder than, say, Bismarck based strictly on the percent of the population that is "at risk."

Makes sense.

This tweet thread below is exactly what is wrong with our country.  People believe this sh×t and spread the info to others, much like Covid does.

Social media, including message boards, suck.

Completely agree.  This moron's tweet string comes to the conclusion that kids going back to school will, "close schools forever."

From what I can see, not one statement is based in scientific fact/evidence.

I’ve been watching the numbers in Cass county. Does anyone local have a sense if they contain large numbers of asymptotic people or if they are people who were tested because they were sick

Posted

After 2 weeks without a day of over 4% of tests coming back positive in ND, the last 2 days have seen +6.5% positive testing rate.  Hopefully it's not a trend.

Looks like Cass County nursing homes are still struggling to keep the virus out.  Of the 935 Cass County confirmed cases, 214 are long-term care facility employees and residents.  Granted, part of that is due to who they are targeting for testing.

Just heard the California University System will not be returning student back to the classroom on campuses in the fall. So no Pac-12 football? Or just drop UCLA, USC, Cal and Stanford from the conference schedules?

Is healthcare at least getting a bit back to normal out there?  47 counties in NY are now authorized to resume elective surgeries (the hospital money maker).  My 2 counties aren't included in those 47, but hopefully within another week or two.

Not yet in CA...frustrating everyone...

Oh c’mon.  “Socialism” is just an anti-left buzzword.

9 out of the top 10 poorest US states are staunch Red ones.  These are the states with one hand in the air screaming “We hate socialism!”; the other hand squeezing the teat of the federal government for economic survival.   I mean, Christ almighty, MS, KY and LA rely on the feds for more than 40 percent of their revenue.  Welfare parasites.

Both the Left and Right love big government if it serves their purposes.

40% of their revenue...nice spin

let's take the states of NY and Florida....roughly the same populations.  one state is hard blue and florida is mostly red....let's say that each state gets from the federal gov  10 million dollars to fund their states? ok?  but NY is a nanny state with tons of corruption so their expenses are 100 million dollars per year but in Florida they only spend 50 million dollars to run their state for that year for roughly the same amount of people.

Headline!!!!! Florida (red state) gets 20% of their revenue for the federal gov and NY (blue state) only gets 10% of their revenue from the federal gov!!!!!!!!!

MN Stay at home will expire on the 18th

Still gotta wait until at least June 1st to get my hair cut though. Bars, restaurants, barbers/salons, and gyms are all until at least June 1st I think.
