As I recall, you were one of the people that continually were ripping Hakstol for not winning the Big One.

Which means I point out things on any UND hockey coach regime.

Adams has muscle...he’s not getting too much bigger.  He should have played through his struggles.  Berry far too quick to pull the plug on some guys.  He’s too quick to pull the plug on Johnson at D too. There has been some games where I thought Johnson looked very solid...and he was only a freshmen/sophomore.  This thinking that guys have to be 100% developed immediately is ridiculous.

Totally agree.  Kawaguchi was horrible in the first few series and Berry stuck with him.........the result was IMO the most improved player on this team start to finish. Adams wasn't as bad as Kawaguchi early on yet he couldn't see ice the 2nd half of the season?

It's also kind of where he fit on the lines, too. Adams has to be a Top 6 guy because of his lack of strength/grit. Who do you put him in for in the Top 6? As Kawaguchi progressed in the second half, Adams got exposed, so they kind of flipped roles.

He's going to have his chance in 18-19.

With the dual crippling deficiencies of a stark lack of talent and pathetic effort, it should have been clear they didn't belong on the ice with the league's best teams.  But they took DU and SCSU to OT in six of the last seven meetings.  They lost most of those games, which is how you miss the NCAAs, but it means they were close.  You can't be close if the program is terrible in either its talent or effort, let alone both.

Let's review.  They headed to the Twin Cities, lost the semifinal game, and won the third place game, finishing 14th in the Pairwise.  Then they went on to beat Wisconsin and Ferris State in the NCAA regional, advancing to the Frozen Four.  Oh, you thought I meant 2018.  That was the Spring of 2014.  Seems just about identical, up until the autobid difference.

Spot on, my friend. People LOVED that team lol.

Every coach has their strength and weakness.

When Hakstol was running the ship they might have been better recruiters.

Let's check back in like 5 years so Bubbs can have more than 2 of "his" recruits on the team, shall we?

Btw his two... Kawaguchi, which everyone sees as the most improved player on the team; and Jones, our leading goal scorer and a player who will wear a letter in his season season. Pretty good, so far :)

Hakstol was all over the country to look and talk to recruits, including going to Waterloo, Iowa and back in a day just to have coffee with Boeser.

He wasn't gonna leave anything up to "chance."

Any proof that Bubbs doesn't do this?

Question: Is the NCAA a copy cat league in terms of where to recruit from? Earlier in the 2000’s, it seemed all the rage to get kids from Shattuck and then the past few years, it seems like the BCHL has been the flavor of the month. I realize some very talented players have come from these areas but are there perhaps other leagues that get less attention where we might be able to find that “diamond in the rough” that we (UND) haven’t traditionally been looking at?

No not really.  In order of volume/talents it’s ushl, BCHL, NA/AJ, ohjhl, mj, sj.  With ushl being far and away the best, but some high enders come from the BCHL.

Not to mention that it was the first time since 2003 that the #14 team in the pairwise didn't make the tourney.

Now that the season is over, and they didn't make the tournament, can we all rationally look at this? Gardner's knee clearly makes contact and it deserved to be a penalty.

Proud of my hawks this year!

You should go look at the knee to knee hit BU got away with against Providence. Now that was a knee to knee hit that should have been a 5.

That Western Michigan player dove and grabbed his knee to sell the call.

One season. One. Average. Season. In which we could have EASILY made the tournament.

Exactly. Just as easily as they could have missed it a few years back when they finished in the exact same spot in the Pairwise (#14) and still needed a late Wisconsin rally to get in.

Yup and everyone loved that team. Crazy how short sided we seem as a fanbase as a whole

15 forwards.
How many are legitimate "top six" guys?

We have this strange affection for bottom six grinder guys.
Yes, you need them, but not 12 of the 15 forwards.

Simonson: 139 games, 9 goals
Olson: 121 games, 11 goals
Smith: 66 games, 8 goals
Bowen: 66 games, 8 goals
Yon: 60 games, 4 goals

This team needs offense, both mindset and production.

Bowen and Yon we were recruited as Top 6-type players, so this doesn't fit into the "affection" for bottom 6 guys. They just haven't panned out, thus far. We'll see.

He sold the call for sure but it's definitely a trip. I'm glad we can agree

Less Nepotism.

More Talent.

Fans: He's only playing because of his last name!
Also fans: Why are all these kids/grandkids of former UND players going to other schools?!
