Is just flat wrong information, girls hockey participation and growth is skyrocketing. but all these are valid concerns to sponsoring a sport. IMHO 9. Is what led to 1-7. This lawsuit will set back the potential of the real conversation about how a women’s team “could” be reserected. Wrong fight from the wrong people at the wrong time, for the wrong reasons. How is 10 wrong? Girls hockey maybe growing (via participation) but that doesn't equal quality talent for a D1 school. It's been said before but if girls hockey/grand forks were huge, both high schools would have a Varsity/JV team. t the end of the day, basketball is still the number 1 sport in the state of North Dakota for females. This can be backed up by the local (in-state) talent that is recruited to play at UND/NDSU. Quote

As far as North Dakota producing girls capable of playing a division 1 sport, Hockey currently lags behind Basketball, Volleyball, Softball, and Track. Probably more in line with Gymnastics and Soccer. Quote
darell1976 Posted June 14, 2018 Posted June 14, 2018 Maybe more people would accept women’s hockey if it wasn’t so boring with the no checking rule. 3 Quote

I'm actually not critical of the women's game in that way. I certainly don't have the exact same expectations for style of play when I go to MBB compared to WBB. They are equally pleasing to me in their own ways, especially if UND is winning. Where I depart from WIH is when I see the sense of entitlement that seems to exude people associated with the former UND program that it was somehow different and that it should have been handled differently than other cut programs: wrestling, baseball, M&W S&D, and the privatizing of MG (to include the recent broaching of a possible endowment plan). Their (many WIH supporters) vitriol is nauseating even for someone like me who attended almost all of their homes games and cheered them on win or lose. "hell hath no fury ..." 6 Quote

Basketball has basically the same rules and tempo, women’s hockey has no checking which is a key element of the game. Could you imagine if the men didn’t have checking? 2 Quote
Sioux>Bison Posted June 14, 2018 Posted June 14, 2018 We also need to remember why these sports were cut instead of another sport. Conference requirements were huge in this decision. Women's hockey didn't help us get in the summit and only hurt UND by taking funds away from the other teams. People saying football should have been cut too because it lost more money is about the most ignorant statement I have heard. A huge part of our reach and notoriety comes from football. It's attendance at both home and away games blows most of the other sports out of the water. If we were to drop football we might as well go to NAIA because at that point the ability for national recognition goes down the drain. Why would we piss off one of our biggest group of donors by dropping football. 1 Quote

What was UND supposed to do, save womens hockey and cut 5-6 other sports? No way you can do that. UND was fortunate to only cut the amount of programs they did. Womens hockey being cut resulted in less. 1 Quote

Siouxperfan7 Posted June 14, 2018 Posted June 14, 2018 People need to remember that womens hockey wasn't cut because attendance was low, they weren't a successful program, or that Kennedy just doesn't think women should have nice things. The reason womens hockey was cut is because of the mandated budget cuts and the fact that womens hockey was the highest cost/athelete sport at UND that cost them 1.9 million year. Add the fact that the hockey program had no affiliation to the primary athletic conference UND was going to be in and that is your reason. Anything other than that is irrelevant to the situation. 1 Quote

UND1983 Posted June 14, 2018 Posted June 14, 2018 Also relevant is the fact that Idalski just left for a new job. Must not have much faith in the lawsuit. Quote

F'n Hawks Posted June 14, 2018 Posted June 14, 2018 I’ve seen people arguing the fact that the 2 million dollar loss of the program isnt the “true number.” Quote

All NDSU women’s sports have been outdrawn by UND WIH. The NDSU women’s bb program is a pathetic shell of its former DII glory. It was a quote from the lawsuit. Has nothing to do with the writer. SiouxVolley Posted June 15, 2018 Posted June 15, 2018 Girls hockey has seen the most growth in NHL states, where they still aren’t producing DI talent. Minnesota and ND growth has been rather flat. Most girl start hockey to learn to skate, but the numbers that switch to figure skating and synchronized skating is rather alarming. That just doesn’t happen with boys, as long as a SJW isn’t coach. The suit says there are increasing numbers of young women in North Dakota and throughout the Upper Midwest playing hockey at the high school and club levels. Well, that's all fine and dandy but I'd like more information on how this will affect girls in Finland and Manitoba since that's where UND's recruits seem to have come from... 2 6 Quote
The Sicatoka Posted June 15, 2018 Posted June 15, 2018 There are increasing numbers of lax players in that same region. Not sayin', jus' sayin'. But that said, are we cleared to cut sports if participant numbers are on the downward slide? Quote
