So und was given the same ultimatum as Florida state? Then why did und need to get multiple tribes' approval? Not exactly the same offer. Florida state also has more money to offer their one tribe. And how can this guy say und had done little to pay the sioux people for using the name? Wow! UND did everything they could with the tribal councils and were 2 tribal council votes shy of getting a vote allowed on SR. Their fault the failure to nurture any kind of stable, good faith relationships from at least the 40's or 50's forward. Any payment would have been seen as a "bribe" and the nickname opponents on the councils were too "principled" to go that route. As President Kupchella said, the nickname had been in the public domain for decades. Not one part of the NCAA charade should have been necessary though the school have cultivated relationships anyway. UND was bullied 1.) because it was and is smaller than FSU and it's not a BCS school; and 2.) Dorgan, Conrad and Pomeroy did absolutely nothing and Florida's delegation did. Dorgan's, Conrad's and Pomeroy's indifference were no surprise, especially given their impotence and squishiness to GFAFB's loss of ICBM's to Malmstrom and B-1 B bombers all when Bill Clinton (yes, a Democrat) was President. There was hope with Hoeven but he turned out to be entirely squishy too. Whether it's "Redskins", "Seminoles" or "Fighting Sioux", the names have been in the public domain and permission should not be necessary. If you don't like the name(s), that's "tough darts", as Randy Lee used to say. Anyone tired of the irrational PC society we live in will absolutely love listening to this guy like drinking a delicious glass of refreshing ice water after a long stretch in a hot desert.. Hopefully this will keep people busy while those looking out for the best interests of the University and athletic department as a whole move on and put a new nickname in place. Still can't figure out why people don't understand that's the point we are at, regardless of how it came to be. Now sure you could say that's unfair, but really it is not. Florida State had to get all namesake tribes in the state of Florida to give approval. There is only one in Florida and they gave approval. Boom, name stays. All UND had to do is get approval from both manesake tribes in the state of North Dakota. Is that fair, well you can debate that, but it is the agreement that UND signed in the settlement. Have plenty of time to gain approval from Standing Rock. They chose not to give it. Name gone. It doesn't surprise me that details of this issue get forgotten. It has been almost 10 years since this story has been going on!! It does however surprise me that people think that we can go back to being the Fighting Sioux. It's not going to happen.It sucks, I agree. But people need to accept reality. I can understand why some at Spirit Lake are disheartened that Standing Rock did not follow suit with a referendum, but their anger should be directed at Standing Rock for refusing to engage in the matter, or against the NCAA for setting up the policy and the namesake exemption in the first place. Regardless, the Sioux had a voice and were not silenced. I'm not sure what they're talking about with the sealed court records. The 2007 article about the court seal states that the seal was only temporary and expired on November 5, 2007. Initially, Jahnke said the seal would expire Monday, to coincide with a pretrial hearing. Jahnke on Monday extended his order to Nov. 5 after on Friday postponing the pretrial hearing to that date. http://www.parkrapidsenterprise.com/content/und-nickname-lawsuit-records-remain-sealed-0 Unless there was a subsequent order sealing records, there shouldn't be anything still subject to seal. Not everyone is as easy to surrender and if RHHIT can be made to believe he has been played the fool by a centuries old enemy, maybe there is a chance. Of course the NC$$ may not respond as it would be hoped as they would have to reverse course and lose face. The cards are definitely stacked against the cause and hopes of even the most die hard fans are waining but some will cherish the name all the way to the grave.
