  1. 1. What name should replace "Fighting Sioux" after it's retired?

Uh ... there's a Native American on the selection committee. Toast.

He was placed on the committee (hand picked by President Kelley), as a native American who was against the "Fighting Sioux" sobriquet.  You can form your own opinions why he did that, and not include a native American who was for the "Fighting Sioux" as well, but it is what it is.  Everyone knew that the "Fighting Sioux" was gone, but I think he wanted to make a statement.

Arrowheads - Used by Native Americans

Nokota - Horses; Horses were used by Native Americans

Force - Native Americans could consider themselves a force.

Big Green - A Native American has wore the color green at some point in time.

Flickertail - Likely killed by a Native American at some point in time.

UND - Attended by Native Americans

This isn't looking good.

North Dakota- Indian name better change the state name.

HOLY COW!

We can't have "North Dakota" as a nickname.

It's the same as the retired name Fighting S-word  --> an adjective followed by the name of ... a tribe.

That violates the settlement agreement.

So if we put Dakota on the football jerseys like the Carolina's do we would be in bad terms with the NCAA ....that would be interesting.

We already are North Dakota, the University of North Dakota.

I swear some people think that team that plays in the NCHC in Engelstad Arena is a sovereign entity and not the University of North Dakota's entrant into NCAA Division I ice hockey.

Hint to those blinded by a nickname and logo: It is the University of North Dakota's entrant into NCAA Division I ice hockey. They already are "North Dakota". Nicknaming the team "North Dakota" is straight out of the Department of Redundancy Department.

To clear up any confusion, I said, and meant, no nickname is needed.

Sometimes I think we have to go back to "English Language 101" so, ...

A nickname is "a name added to or substituted for the proper name of a person, place, etc., as in affection, ridicule, or familiarity." *

Proper name: University of North Dakota

Nickname:

Maybe that's the solution: All that's in the "nickname" space right now is white space.

University of North Dakota White Space

No, wait, clearly racist.

As is Minnesota....

In fact their football team uses Ski-u-mah.....an Indian saying

ON THEIR HELMETS.

So in essence the once great and mighty UMtc is in violation of not only NCAA policy but by the rules of the university are forbidden to play with themselves....er is it play themselves, or itself..

I'm confused.

Any thoughts about how "UNDErmines" can also be written as "under-mines"? Freudian slip?

Actually, it was that very kernal of thought that started the whole Ermine movement.  As I mentioned in my suggestion to the clearly overmatched committee, it's not just a great mascot, but it's also delightfully Machiavellian.
