MissSioux85 Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 A few years ago Matt Greene established an endowment through the UND Foundation to help fund hockey scholarships. I've always wondered if Toews, Parise, and Oshie have given any major gifts to UND. 3 Quote
Fetch Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 the interest on a million today (if ur lucky) would not be enough to live on Quote
siouxforcefans Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 Anyone hearing anything about Chris VandeVelde? I know he's a free agent, but after that drink of water with the Flyers last year, I'd expect him to be getting some 2 way offers soon. Quote
keikla Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 Greene's latest contract only makes me feel even stronger about the idea that athletes make too much. For me athletes are good because they inspire many, but because of that, I feel like the players should take a pay cut and give the left over funds to student organizations. Use Greene for example; does he really need 10 million to live. Ok make that 5 million with taxes, but still. I say a million is more then enough to live on when most families much less then that and are fine. donate the other four million or 4 million to a program that supports students and be a real role model. Many athletes often times donate to past organizations such as Engelstad and his wife, but it is not always needed. As noted, Greene set up an endowment for UND scholarships. If I remember correctly, the amount was for 50k a year. That's what he gives publicly. I agree that athletes make a lot; no one would argue that. But just because the general public isn't aware of giving doesn't mean it isn't happening. Maybe some athletes donate funds to support students, maybe some goes to flood or tornado relief efforts or cancer research or the AIDS epidemic or a local hospital or homeless shelter. We have no way of knowing private financial affairs (other than the contract salary total), so I'm a bit hesitant to judge whether or not athletes are being 'real role models' with their finances. 1 Quote

It's been too long since Lord Stanley's last visit, especially since Mr Toews doesn't want to come back to GF...must still have some unpaid parking tickets from his time here. Quote

But a part of me says they have to plan ahead, theirs is a limited career at that level. After getting used to a different lifestyle (I assume), they have to plan for the rest of their life. Also, there is the possibility of disabling injuries. Guess I keep remembering Travis Roy and his first shift into the college game against UND. Quote
MafiaMan Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 Toews won't be back to forks guys nor has established an endowment Remember what happend to his family member here There is a better chance of Toews bringing a Cup to Faribault MN than there is of him bringing one to Grand Forks. Quote

Hi, I'm on the board of directors of an organization with $200+ million in assets and $100 million in annual revenues. We're looking for a new CEO. We'd like to hire you for $1 million per year. And we assume you'll be giving about 80% of that to students because you can easily live on $200k annually. Right? Greene's making $10 million over 4 years ($2.5 annually). Taxes, agents, etc. and he's taking less than half of that. And given his age, that may be the last deal of his career. He'll be 30 and done earning. Compare that to ... Do the math in a "normal" (30-35 year career): If you average $60k you'll have earned about $2 million in your lifetime. Quote

Hayduke Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 Maybe you should move to Seattle - you would fit right in with the other Socialist morons. Free market. I agree. If Matt Greene, Toews, Parise, Oshie, etc., can get that kind of money, go for it! I have no problem with it. More power to them. If you don't like it, you can vote for this with your pocket. I prefer to go to college games. I watch big-league sports on TV. A big reason is the cost. To get a decent seat to the Avalanche costs around $100. I prefer to spend my $$ on a few college games instead. I"m just as, if not more, entertained for less $$$. Quote

Goon Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 You mean his brother on the team? If so, what happened? Nothing happened to his brother, he wasn't good enough to stick in the lineup. If you notice his career in the WHL, he didn't really light it up either. Quote
Frozen4sioux Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 I always thought he was a legacy roster spot in an era when you just can't hide legacy spots in the lineup anymore. Does Jonathan really have some deep seated grudge against the program?... If so I've never seen that, he always speaks highly of UND and gives respect and reverence for his time there in interviews. Maybe only the old boys club gets the deranged hate filled letters of seething evil from former players that hold grudges Quote

Maybe only the old boys club gets the deranged hate filled letters of seething evil from former players that hold grudges I asked Schlossman about this earlier this year after he interviewed JT for an article. He said Toews had nothing but great things to say about the program and that he and Troy Murray follow the club through the year and talk about it. Quote
