If he wasn't betting on NHL games, per Elliotte's article, it seems excessive. Almost as if the league is bullying him for holding out.

He isn't holding out. Ottawa has $46000 under the cap. They can't even offer him the league minimum contract until they make some trades to clear cap space which now is not in their interest to trade a guy or two who are playing every night to make room to sign a guy they won't have for 41 games.

And to make it worse. the suspension doesn't start until he is under contract and it he isn't under contract by 12/1 he can't play this season.

Ottawa does not have room to sign him unless they trade a couple guys to creat cap space but probably are not going to do that for a guy who won't be able to play for 40 games.

I read it it already started?

So if he didn't bet on Hockey and gambling is allowed in Casino's and through gambling sites....my guess is being a New York kid he gambled through a bookie which could open him up to possible undue influence if he had debts?

It is kind of funny actually, all you see during any sporting event are gambling  ads. Every social media platform is overrun with them.

Maybe holding out is the wrong term; they were 1 million apart on the salary and needed to have that agreement sorted out before making the necessary trades.

NHL players are allowed to gamble legally, just not on hockey.

And they said he did not bet on hockey.

Mye guess is that instead of using the NHL and Ottawa Senators endorsed site Bet99 that Pinto may have instead used the betting services of Joey Baggadonuts

From the Athletic

Quote

The suspension will retroactively be set to begin on the first game of the Senators’ season. Pinto won’t be able to return to the lineup until Jan. 21 in Philadelphia — Ottawa’s 42nd game.

As a 10.2(c) RFA, Pinto has very limited rights in free agency but does not need to be under contract by Dec. 1 in order to be eligible to play during the 2023-24 season, as Group 2 RFAs do.

And Ottawa has no leverage in a trade to get the money to sign Pinto, the suspension doesn't help either.

They said that he did not bet on NHL hockey. Quite possibly he was betting on the college game. Maybe, just maybe, he might’ve had insider knowledge?
