Could NDSU ever compete with UND in Hockey?

I find it hard to believe there isn't a contingent of wealthy NDSU alums who follow the game who haven't/wouldn't step up similar to the guy out in Tempe and help fund a program.

Those farmer graduates just don't have that type of money.  ;)

I would actually love to see them come to D1 hockey, if for nothing more than to wipe that smug look off their collective faces.

And that's exactly why they won't do it anytime soon.

As much I don't care for the Bison, I think it would elevate hockey at every level in North Dakota if NDSU had a D-I program. I find it hard to believe there isn't a contingent of wealthy NDSU alums who follow the game who haven't/wouldn't step up similar to the guy out in Tempe and help fund a program. The Sheels Center would be the perfect location in the near- and mid-term and if the sport grew in popularity, they could always consider building a bigger, on-campus arena. What great regional rivalries with UND, Omaha, St. Cloud, and Mankato, to name a few NDSU could have once they're established. I believe a rising tide lifts all boats and this could be great for western expansion of the game and could really propel ND high school and youth hockey as more and more kids would want to play hockey due in part to the interest a Bison hockey team would generate. Someone else mentioned it too that could you imagine the rivalry between UND and NDSU?!?! I would guarantee the Ralph would be packed to the gills when the Bison come to town-and vice versa!

I agree, but I hope it never happens, because dealing with Bison trolls throughout the entire hockey season would be miserable.

On bright side, we already pack the Ralph to the gills!

This thread is pure troll bait and once you get them in your house they are very hard to get rid of. But I suppose it's better than having all the action be in the "Fire Coach" threads.

So according to you NDSU, which doesn't even have a legit hockey team, "could be" competitive vs. UND in hockey but most NDSU trolls on this site feel UND, which has a legit FB team that went 7-4 this past season, is incapable of being "competitive" with NDSU in FB?

Carry on..................

Definitely one of the reasons why I thought this thread being dusted off was dumb.... Bison. Trolls.

Okay but its still a valid question for debate considering Penn state, AZ state have added hockey and now UNLV is likely to add hockey in the near future. Maybe time to renew the discussion.

Penn State and AZ state are not just "adding" hockey, they both have had successful Club teams for a long time. The problem with NDSU is what everyone says, there is not enough money to go around at NDSU and they do not see it as a viable income. If they added D1 hockey they would have to add a woman's sport of some sort just to comply with the rules

Hockey is an interesting community, If NDSU had made the move when they should have, they could have gotten someone like a Gino Gasparini to jump start their program. Even now there are some respected names out there that give instant credibility and could get them off to a running start. could you imagine someone like Gwozdecky coaching in Fargo.

Oddly enough NDSU's men's club team isn't that great*, but they have a really good women's club program.

*that was when I looked into them about 2 years ago, things may have changed since then.

But oddly enough despite that success and growth of the sport in the region, somehow surveys continue to show that there is apparently no interest in giving women an opportunity to play at the collegiate level there, which is about all it would take to force NDSU's hand into adding another sport because of how they "comply" with Title IX.

Title nine would make adding hockey difficult and I doubt they would add womens hockey in addition to mens hockey, I think ASU added womens rowing to meet title nine, i guess they though it had less overhead.

Teh Gwoz and Teh Herd? That would be pure gold.

I would love to see them add women hockey, as someone with a niece who is an aspiring hockey player I would love to see the sport continue to grow for women as well, but for god sake can we just let them check like the guys!?

I'm sure their uniforms would be absolutley hideous.

I hate NDSU - but their club team has pretty sick uniforms. Might be a little juniorsy looking, but still pretty cool.

I thought besides basketball, their main winter sport was Barnyard Gymnastics.

They don't talk about that in polite company.

The question was could we be competitive. Hire a great coach and get good players. .  Of course it would take sometime---But---Why couldnt they?

The rest of your post has nothing to do with the question.

My guess is the moment SU gets a hockey team, they will close the REA, all coaches and players will transfer down south, and all the fans will swear their immediate allegiance to the Bison.
