rochsioux Posted February 26, 2019 Posted February 26, 2019 Per Schloss, it would appear that the non conference games for next season are: Home: Manitoba (exh.) Bemidji State Canisius Alabama Huntsville Michigan Tech (1 game) Road: Minnesota Mankato State USNTDP under 18 (exh.) The home schedule looks less than inspiring. Not sure what the thought process is in scheduling both Canisius and Huntsville. They’re both usually bottom feeders in the pairwise so beating them is of no help while a loss is a killer (as we have seen this year). On top of that there is just no appeal to go see those teams play. I would much rather see them play almost any big ten or hockey east team. Quote
Frozen4sioux Posted February 26, 2019 Posted February 26, 2019 Wooof..... thats kinda cringey to say the least. It would have been much more interesting to get a B1G or even an ASU in for a weekend. Given the trend in attendence, it could be even uglier for some of those games. Just another concerning aspect of the program as a whole to me. Quote

Agreed, not sure I like paying $40+ or so to see our boys take on teams like ala hunt, Can, and tech. Away games will be great though. Minn and kato. I think the team would like to play teams like Ohio state, Michigan... maybe even BU or BC! Fans would much rather pay to see those teams... IMO. Quote
SIOUXELEVENS Posted February 26, 2019 Posted February 26, 2019 I’m sure schedules are set a few years in advance so may be tough to get every team we would like to see. Also the meat grinder which is the NCHC regular season some cupcakes sprinkled in can’t hurt. 2 Quote

I agree completely with the Huntsville and Canisius sentiment. It's expensive and, at best, a schedule filler that could have a detrimental impact in the event our boys don't show up to play. Anybody feel free to correct if I'm wrong, but I believe when we have a series against an atypical opponent, no matter the host, they do their best to duplicate that series at some point in the other building. Multiple drivers here (offset travel costs, guarantees non-conference scheduled games, etc.). I do know it didn't happen the last time UAH was in town. Was at that series a few years ago and it was uneventful. As many of us know their program has been shaken up a couple times this past decade with threats of being shut down or moving out of the NCAA ranks. For all reasons, a tough opponent to schedule with, but if anything good exposure and experience for everyone. Quote

Other than their win against Penn State #19, all their wins were against sub # 25 pairwise ranked teams. #8 team in the country? They have exposed a flaw in the pairwise. Quote
Siouxperfan7 Posted February 26, 2019 Posted February 26, 2019 Of course people would love to see Big 10, Hockey East, or even WCHA schools like Mankato come into the Ralph. But that's not always an option every year. Just the way scheduling works. Sure it's unfortunate we don't have a better non conference schedule, but that's life. Sure, iins against the liked of Canisius and Huntsville don't really help us and loses can really hurt us. bit, if we can't beat the bottom feeders of Atlantic Hockey and the WCHA at home, do we really deserve to make the tournament? As someone stated in a previous post, given the grind that is the NCHC, it's OK to play a few cupcakes that hopefully result in wins to get some confidence heading into the meat grinder that is the NCHC conference schedule. Quote
Frozen4sioux Posted February 26, 2019 Posted February 26, 2019 Actually the data supports playing a almost total cupcake schedule of sub 20 team. This equals a highe winning percentage that keeps high in pairwise due to that. This however ill equips a team to compete in yhe tourney against better teams. You can play a all top schedule and grind it out and make the tourney and be a serious contender every time... ala UND last 18 years. The BIGGEST risk is to schedule cupcakes and grind theough the conference because then one hiccup against such bottom feeder = golfing early. 1 1 Quote
AJS Posted February 26, 2019 Posted February 26, 2019 I know I'm in the minority, but I personally really like the schedule. I'm looking at this strictly from wins / losses aspect. There's less risk playing bad teams at home. A sweep against a bad team is better than a split against a good team. 1 Quote

When the current version of REA opened, it was supposed to attract a bunch of big-time Division I programs. So much for that idea. And this thinking makes us sound like a freaking mid-major program. We are a big-time program and I don't want that to change ever. Quote
Big Green Posted February 26, 2019 Posted February 26, 2019 Don't mind the cupcakes, but should have at least 1 major program in for a non-conference series each year. All the others can be Cup Cakes as the conference schedule is tough enough. Quote

Yeah, except here's the rub: Those big time programs (many of which have come here in the past, so I guess, so much for that criticism) require a return trip or don't have a desire to fly out to North Dakota, particularly to play a tough UND team. Alternatively, they can save on their end of travel expenses by scheduling other teams that are closer by. On UND's side, in order to help fund the athletic department, they need a certain number of home games, so they have to buy some games against lower level programs that don't require a return game. Some people must get exhausted be faux-worked up over everything. 4 Quote

I have never that the Ralph was built to attract big time D1 programs. It was built to attract the big time recruits, which we can all agree has happened. Playing teams that aren't "big time Division 1 programs" isn't a knock on a team or make them any less of a powerhouse program. Look at Duke basketball's non conference schedule every year. Doesn't seem to hut their reputation. Quote

The Sicatoka Posted February 26, 2019 Posted February 26, 2019 Next season we have the potential for less offense than this season ... until the freshmen figure out the college level. Having some games where the freshmen can figure it out isn't a bad thing. And yes, don't clomp those games like this year. It's about piling up a big RPI (the PWR tie breaker comparison) and to do that you must crank up the winning percentage. Quote
