iramurphy
A big factor in the so called “hockey only” crowd is that there are many UND hockey fans who are Bison fans for all other sports. I’m glad we have them. I don’t believe they prevent success for our other sports, they just aren’t going to support them.
siouxweet
Seems like there is a crowd on here that likes to pummel the hockey program along with its fans and are jealous of the donations some forner players have given the program. Answer me this, then why haven't there been any former football players that have done the same for the football program? 1

There is a division II classification football and UND is not in that. Get your facts straight before you even attempt to pollute conversation with your biased garbage. And there are plenty of people- like yourself - who identify UND athletics as solely a hockey program and nothing else. If anyone needs help, it’s the guy who willingly identifies as “frozen 4 Sioux” … man you’re delusional and out of touch with reality. But, if you stay in a small bubble around northeast ND and northwest MN, you can manage, I suppose.

We could try to hire the next up and coming D2 coach but that doesn’t mean success will be guaranteed. They would still need to recruit better talent to UND. Who are they going to out recruit? Thank you. That is my point. All these teams pulled a successful coach from a lower division and are seeing improvement in their programs. I am not familiar enough with other FCS programs to know which ones have pulled DII or NAIA coaches, but am confident it had been done as successfully as these FBS programs have been in recruiting G5 coaches. But it is a moot point as long as Bubba wants to remain the head coach.
The Sicatoka
I'm with the UNDFootball360 guys when they tweeted this was third road game in four weeks and it showed. The homecoming game will tell me what I need to know.
Siouxperfan7
I often wonder what the state of this program would have been had Dale Lennon not left for SIU. Pretty safe to say he wanted to coach at the FCS level. When he left in January of 2006, UND had announced it was moving up till later that year. Granted, it didn't work out for Dale at SIU, but would it have been different had he statue at UND? The Muss years were brutal, so it wouldn't have taken much. But, Lennon had maintained the winning atmosphere in the program that RT created. Having that consistency in our transition years to D1 would have been nice. Lennon leaving and UND hiring the worng guy (Muss) deffinitely put this program in nuetral. And now we are trying to catch up to the rest of the MVFC, especailly the Dakota schools.

Who knew he would be a bust. He went 6-7 his first year and then 13-0 his second year. You call that a good track record? Especially a good resume to jump into a P5 program?

Nebraska learned the lesson that 1) you need a larger sample size than 2 (seasons) 2) you preferably need to see someone do it at the P5 level elsewhere first But it’s a challenge. Extrapolating that to UND, you would have to hire someone with multiple successful D2 seasons and/or someone who’s been a winning head coach at the FCS level. There’s not a ton out there that fits that bill, so there’s always a risk.

Dustin
Am I out of line here in suggesting that we nab a NDSU (gasp!) coordinator or assistant and tell them to do in Grand Forks what they did in Fargo? I hate NDSU FB and their success as much as anyone on here (someone mentioned that some UND hockey fans are Bison fans for other sports - I especially hate that approach), but you have to admit that they know how to get it done. The only reason he got that is due to him being an alum and the fact that Nebraska looked the other way on all his other flaws. If UND wants to make a coaching change and they want to make a splash, they will need to pony up some money and/or they will need to find that GEM that is hiding at a D2 level AKA Brian Kelly... Here is a thought. Does UND let Bubba coach another year or two and then bring Schmidt back? He will have a pretty good resume as an assistant coach (and he knows how to recruit) at the FBS level and UND would be his first HC gig, so he shouldn't command a whole lot.

Once you've made it into Power 5 and have success you don't come back. And as someone pointed out he's making just about 2X as much as Bubba.
