  1. Agree this could be a reasonable role for him. I don't understand others that are trashing him on here. Criticizing the decision the coaches made to start him and then not giving Jerry playing time during the year is fair. But Simon didn't make himself the starter and I'm sure busted his a$$ all year and gave all he had.

  2. I sure hope this means that we see 7 D dressed each night vs. a 13th forward. I never understood dressing a 13th forward vs. a 7th D. When this rule was put in place, I thought it was the ideal spot to work in a freshman D man where you can strategically spot him throughout the game.

  4. Hopefully less prone to injuries as well. I felt we got cheated out of watching so much of Sanderson during his time at UND. He was such a fun player to watch.

  9. If anyone wants to burn some time, I suggest checking out HFBoards. Full on meltdown by CHL fans in Verhoeff and Reschny prospect threads. Its funny how they’re demanding compensation and clamoring for NHL to take action for their benefit yet it was crickets every time a star NCAA player would bail just weeks before season started or worse in the middle of season for the CHL.

  11. I knew when they hired Jackson that things wouldn't change much. Then going with Smaby instead of opening up for the best talent available . . . . Sigh. I guess we'll just have to enjoy the season as best we can.

  12. Might be just me but I don't think the team will depend too much on EJ for offense and shouldn't need to (any added offense will be a bonus definitely) . As long as he can maintain and keep improving his stopping on the defensive end he'll be playing his role to a T. Excited to see him keep taking steps. Him and Zmolek have the potential to be the shut down anchors on the pairs they are on.

  13. I really do appreciate the type of coverage that Miller and UND360 deliver. They don't blow smoke, and they tell it like it is. The roster is not close is what we've gathered from them. I would really like to clarify. Not close to what? Championship caliber? 2nd Round type of team? Playoff caliber? In comparison to last year? I'm going to fill in the gaps a bit from what I'm hoping they mean, which is not close to championship caliber. Which I think is accurate, but I think they are really undervaluing a few things. State of the FCS. IMO, this will be the weakest the elite of the FCS has ever been. NDSU most likely will win it all again this year, this won't be a Top 10 team they've had in the D1 era. Each level (Top 4, Top 8, Top 15) will be the weakest it's ever been. UND's off-season (compared to other MVFC teams). I think they did the best retaining starters out of any team. Fine with portal additions. Compared to previous years UND teams, this was the best off-season they've had in the portal era. Coaching. This is where I'm buying the most stock. From X's and O's to team mentality. It's going to be a night and day difference. Not only is Schmidt the real deal, but I think we'll also find out that Bubba was incredibly bad at it all. Defense. No detail needs to be given, really. The last 3 years have been beyond embarrassing. Do I think they'll compete for a National Championship? Probably not, but also, we're not looking at a handful of teams that are going to be head and shoulders above the rest like we have in the past.

  14. We really are spoiled by the number of players that have come through the University over the years that have turned into quality coaches. Steve Johnson, Chad Johnson, Brad Berry, Karl Goehring, Dane Jackson, Scott Sandelin, Jason Herter, Grant Paranica, Tarek Howard, Tim Skarperude, Tyler Palmiscno, Cary Eades, Dave Tippett, Rick Zombo, Matt Smaby, Colten St. Clair, Dave Hakstol, Jeff Bowen, Jim Archibald, Al Henry, Brad Malone, Dillon Simpson.... And that's just off the top of my head.

  15. He played with an injured shoulder last year. I have no idea how much it affected his throwing. I was told the main reason he started was his leadership ability. The team supposedly gravitated to hm. After watching spring ball none of the top 3 QB’s have moved into the starting spot. It seems all 3 have more “zip” on their throws. It will be tough for him to move back into the top spot after missing spring ball. If he comes out of summer workouts and fall ball as the starter he will have earned it. Schmidt and Fruechte will play whoever gives this team the best chance to win.

  17. Two things regarding the 1883 collective that need to be addressed: First...It is an absolute administrative embarrassment and disgrace that UND is charging the 1883 Collective 25k a year to basically raise money for UND athletics only because they are doing it in the name of the University. Armacost, Chaves and whomever else need to be held accountable for this. It's unnecessary overhead that needs to be resolved to be more financially efficient. If anybody wants to b*tch about something important....this is it. Calls and emails. This is unacceptable. Second ...rent for the 1883 collective unit in Memorial Village. $1600 a month. Do the math. That's money that could be spent on athletes. Hoping the building owners can help out with that and do better for the cause.

  21. Fill that last forward spot with another blue chipper and this upcoming season looks like a real fun one. And agreed on Chyz. So many people were talking about what a great hire he would be for this type of role before Jax was hired. And man, he sure has done a lot in just a few weeks...pretty damn impressive. I was never really a "Berry hater", but I really don't think the roster would look anywhere near this good if he would have still been head coach.

  24. I think the key is for Verhoeff to come back for his sophomore season. For example, say he goes top 5 to the Sharks, Chyzyk & Jackson need to work well with Mike Grier to make sure that Grier is on board with UND's development plan for Verhoeff for another year. Verhoeff takes off from a production and defensive maturity standpoint as a sophomore and then steps into the Sharks lineup in spring 2027 after the UND season is done. That's probably the ideal.

  25. It’s also odd considering the whole fiasco he created when Kernan committed here, so he’s already done it once with McKenna. He quote tweeted Chyzyk’s bat signal and hinted at McKenna, then seemed to make a mockery of the fact that it was Kernan. He’s the worst. As the so-called college hockey ambassador, he can’t see past the Big Ten and Hockey East.

  27. We got our CHL guy, and a huge bonus beyond that. Can’t wait to see the next surprise. Once again a new coaching staff has injected excitement and hope into a UND program. Hopefully this reverses the apathy that took over the program.

  31. Apologies if this has been covered but is there a reason why Gene Roebuck has not been inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame? He won more than 600 games, has a winning percentage of 81.2%, won 3 national championships, played in 4 national championship games, and was the 2006 Russell Athletic/WBCA Division II Region Coach of the Year. Am I missing something? I see Amy Ruley is in the hall of fame, I see no reason why Gene Roebuck shouldn't be.

  33. You absolutely, 100% don't want one of the team captains hitting on other teammates girlfriends. That is for sure a way to fracture some team solidarity. Also you probably don't want the HC to play the lesser skilled upperclassmen in more prominent roles that could be given to higher skilled underclassmen. That can cause some division, especially if the team is under-performing. Just spitballin' here.

  34. Because you can count the number of Canadians that Minnesota has had on their roster in the past 40 years on both hands, they have almost zero connections in the minor hockey world across Canada. They have no idea who the elite players are coming up through the Western Canadian Sports School Academies (CSSHL) at places like Rink Hockey Academy, Burnaby Winter Club, Edge School, Delta Hockey Academy nor do they have any grasp of the elite players coming through the GTHL for organizations like the Don Mills Flyers, Toronto Marlboros, Mississauga Senators, Vaughan Kings, Toronto Red Wings, Toronto Jr Canadiens, etc. Motzko doesn't know (m)any of these coaches, has no pipeline to tap from to get a head start on recruiting. Boston University, Michigan, Notre Dame, Penn State, Michigan State, and several others out east go to GTHL games all the time and are in those minor hockey rinks to recruit these kids during their u16 year. They have connections established with these organizations, coaches, & players. Denver, North Dakota, Wisconsin, Nebraska Omaha, and others are at these CSSHL rinks to recruit kids during their u16 year. They have connections established with these organizations, coaches, & players. Minnesota literally just looks at most kids birth certificate, sees if it says "Minnesota" or not, and then goes to Minnesota HS hockey rinks, some USHL as well. The Goofers don't attack recruiting to get the best players from all over, especially Canada. Say what you will about Michigan's "mercenary" approach, but they will leave no stone unturned to get as high end of talent as possible in every recruiting cycle.

  39. Due to work relocations, I've been both inside the tier1 world (in most States that is the only place you have top end hockey) and the Minnkota community model. There are pros and cons to both. From my perspective, the tier 1 model is better for the truly elite players. When I say truly elite, I mean you are legitimately top 50 in your birth year across all of the US and Canada, maybe top 75. For everybody else, and I mean everybody, you are best served staying in your community. So for 99% of kids- stay home, develop at pace, have a life.
