What was UND's bad luck two years ago?  Losing in the Frozen Faceoff again?

Well, this is a bit embarrassing. Off the top of my head, I can't remember. They didn't make the NCAAs, which would have been caused by some sort of bad luck. Ran into hot goaltending all year? Anyone remember the narrative Berry pushed on Schlossman two years ago? All I know is Berry is due for some good luck!

I guess, but why not extend? This run of bad luck has to end sometime! Remember two years ago? Also, incredibly bad luck.

That team was 18-15-6 and missed the NCAAs. IIRC the post season narrative was based on puck possession, xG and other useless metrics and that this team should have 30-6-3.

And I suppose Denver is just "lucky" to have won 3 NCAA titles over the past 7 years (minus the COVID-shortened year)? :silly:

Enough of the "hot goalie" and "no luck" excuses. We are becoming an afterthought in the world of Division I hockey. Unacceptable.

Stats based on the above isn't really about bad luck then...it's a team that wasn't getting the job done all year.

Thanks for the reminder. That might have been the unluckiest team of all-time. Watching Senden, Hain, Ness and Albrecht fly around, the super sophomore class with Schmaltz and Kunz, cannot believe they didn't raise #9 that year with all that fire power. What could have been with a little luck.

One should look at injuries with a nuanced eye. Certainly they were a factor in losses to BU, WMU & DU, but not so much against Cornell, BSU & RMU. In the latter games, the reasons for the Ls & ties were more due to poor, inconsistent play than anything. The win against DU with a very depleted roster proves that the earlier losses to Cornell & BSU (also with depleted rosters) were more due to being unprepared/unmotivated than because of injuries.

Or DU came out overconfident on Saturday and paid for it with a loss.

Honestly with the experience of Berg and him being our only point per game player, his presence would have made enough of a difference against Cornell and Bemidji to have flipped results of at least one of those games. I’m not making an excuse, but to say Beth’s absence didn’t matter is probably inaccurate to some extent. We’ll never know since we didn’t get the job done, but you get what I’m saying.

I just love how even when the team accomplishes something positive, it's immediately undercut.  Are we sure we're actually fans or just masochists looking for the next hit of negativity? It reminds me of a gambling addict that gets more of a rush from the losses than the wins.

It was a great NCHC road win, which never come easy.

But in the larger context, it isn't necessarily a sign of a big turn around. I will be 100% stunned if we start a winning streak now.

This team is what it is, a mediocre, average team in the NCHC and a non-factor nationally. And anyone who thinks that's not true hasn't been paying attention.

The team is playing better, and a split should not be considered a surprisingly good result this weekend. Get Omaha at home in the first round, win 2 out of 3 after getting hot goalied one night, win a regional-caliber conference tournament at X, and go from there.

Or having too many freshman defensemen playing too many minutes early in the year. Part of the reason they are starting to look better is the defenseman are getting better and getting puck out of own zone quicker

The reason I included the Cornell, BSU & RMU losses/ties due more to poor play/being unmotivated than injuries is because UND looked really lost in those games; the whole team looked uninspired & I'm not sure Berg would have been a dynamic enough force to swing the team-wide lethargy that we witnessed. But I get your point, it's nice to hash through these issues to gain a better perspective.

Offensively-speaking, one sees what happens when you lack scoring depth & 1 of your best scorers is injured. Subtract Berg & UND was relying mostly on an 18 yo Boisvert, Perron & James for the balance of the main scoring. Ideally, UND should have 2 very potent scoring lines as a buffer against any injuries that happen during the season. 2 scoring lines/1 energy line/1 checking line.

You could have stopped after the first sentence.

No one typed any of the things you said after that but you sure beat the snot out of that straw man.

That’s what’ll have to happen.
