I always like to point out to Gopher fans that Debus was a 25 year old goalie in 97-98 which was his 3rd season at Minnesota....did not come back as a 26 year old senior.

Much of their success this year comes from using an almost-25 year old goalie.   Close turns 25 in May.

I used to tease my Gopher buddies that DeBus was hoping to stick around long enough for his kids to suit up in the M jersey along with him.

Who terminated a UND season from 1997 on,
for example read 2017 as "UND ended by BU who was ended by UMD who was ended by Nat Champ DU".
(italics signifies DNQ for NCAAs)

1997 - National Champion
1998 - by Mich
1999 - by BC by Maine
2000 - National Champion
2001 - by BC
2002 - by Minn*
2003 - by Ferris State by Minn
2004 - by Denver
2005 - by Denver
2006 - by BC by Wisc
2007 - by BC by Mich St
2008 - by BC
2009 - by UNH by BU
2010 - by Yale by BC
2011 - by Mich by UMD
2012 - by Minn by BC
2013 - by Yale
2014 - by Minn by Unioin
2015 - by BU by Prov
2016 - National Champion
2017 - by BU by UMD by DU
2018 - by SCSU by USAFA by UMD**
2019 - by DU*** by UMass by UMD

2020 - < bleep > Covid
2021 - by UMD by UMass
2022 - by Notre Dame by Mankato by DU
2023 - TBD

The last team mentioned on each row was the National Champion. Not sure where Covid hangs its banner <- that's rhetorical.

*in WCHA opening round, Minn won NC
**lost to SCSU in NCHC semi (season effectively ends), won 3rd place game over UMD for all the good that did
***in NCHC quarters

If UND does pull it off to win the NCHC, which #1 seed is going to be up in arms that they are sent to the state of North Dakota to play the University of North Dakota?  I can't imagine that going over well for any of the current projected #1 seeds.  Probably end up in some sort rule/format change if that were to happen   We seem to be good at being put into situations that demonstrate flaws in the system.  And not just in hockey.

Hopefully a east coast team.  Only way the NCAA will chance to format to having the #1 seeds host is if an East coast team gets sent out west and the #1 seed gets knocked off by the #4 seed hosting team.  Hoping for Quinnipiac.  Their coach will blow a gasket.

There was definitely some complaining from teams that lost to I believe Providence (I believe, and atleast 2 different years) that was hosted by like Brown in Providence and they kept the Friars there not even as the hosts and as 4 seeds.

In this scenario (UND wins autobid), not likely.

Mn and Q seem locked in 1/2. DU and Mich seem locked 3/4.
UMn gets seeded first, but not Fargo.
Q gets seeded next, out east.
Whoever is 3 visits Scheels in this scenario, and in the scenario DU loses to UND, so Mich is likely 3 and "gonna go-tah North Dakota ... "

Looking at this scenario more ... it's a mess.

Fargo, N.D.    Scheels Arena    March 23 & 25    University of North Dakota
Manchester, N.H.    SNHU Arena    March 23 & 25    University of New Hampshire
Allentown, Pa.    PPL Center    March 24 & 26    Pennsylvania State University and Spectra
Bridgeport, Conn.    Total Mortgage Arena    March 24 & 26    Yale University and Sacred Heart University

Where would you send #1 UMn? Not Fargo or Allentown as there are "home hosts". You protect the #1 from those. Gophers to "Manch-vegas"? Probably. Puts the Q in Bridgeport. You wouldn't send Mich to face PSU in PA would you, so Mich to Fargo and DU to PA and PSU.
