I have seen that but in their announcement they indicated the facility was going to continue to be used for the club teams and recreational purposes.  So it didn't sound like they were shutting down the rink.

Looks like they were in talks with the Penguins to expand and move to the Penguins practice facility.

So, there was "NO VOTE" buy the RMU Board of Trustees, but Morgan O'Brian, Chairman of the RMU Board of Trustees, just decided with the Chris Howard to get rid on men's and woman's hockey.

Exclusive: Steelers GM Kevin Colbert resigned from Robert Morris board because no vote was held to eliminate hockey programs (dkpittsburghsports.com)

Reading this article, this is incredible.  The two cowards who made the decision are just hiding out in their bunker.  If the rest of the Board of Trustees is that mad don't resign, remove the Board Chairman and the School President.

This reminds me of when Peter Pocklington traded Gretzky to the Los Angeles Kings. He was surprised by the uproar it caused and he didn't like the heat he was getting. So he started blaming everyone else. First he said Gretzky asked for the trade. Wayne said he did not. Then he goes after Gretzky's wife, saying she didn't want to live in Edmonton and pushed for the trade. Anyone who watched the 30 for 30 documentary King's Ransom knows that Pocklington was mulling this trade over for several years before it happened. If you want to trade the best player on the planet, that is fine. But you need to own your decision and be able to defend it. Don't go looking for scapegoats to blame when it blows up in your face. I absolutely hate it when people do that.

It just blows my mind that you have the Pittsburgh Penguins and Pittsburgh Steelers offering to help and the school administration doesn't at least try to come up with a plan to save the programs.  They have zero interest in even trying.  Other people in that university community need to understand that these current decision makers are really bad for the university.  They were trusted with something and they allowed it die.  Even sabotaged it and caused it's death.  If the hockey programs were doing poorly it's their fault for letting it get to this point.  Negligence.  Especially when help is offered and they won't even accept it.

First, if you are a department or program head you should be nervous about what if those in power decide that you program or department is no longer important?  They will not fight for you.  Nobody will.  In fact, their negligence might just cause your department/program to fall into such a bad place where it is in a position to be shut down.

Second, faculty and students at a university are simply trusted placeholders.  The university does not belong to them.  It was there before they were and will be there long after they are gone as long as they don't screw it up.  Too often I hear about how the school belongs to the students or the program belongs to the student-athletes, "it's their school/team".  No it doesn't.  It belongs to all of us, alumni, current students (faculty), and future students (faculty).  We're trusting you with it for now, don't screw it up.  Once a program gets shut down it is very hard to get it back.

It seems RMU took a page out of Shaffer/Kennedy closing UND Women's Hockey.

You were only surprised by Schafer if you were merrily whistling past the graveyard.

Hardly.
Anyone who was paying attention absolutely knew UND WIH was in significant danger of being cut due to huge budget constraints at UND and across the state. Just because the head coach choose to ignore it doesn't mean everyone else did as well. There were literal forums about how to handle the budget shortfall, including what sports were going to have to be cut.

Shaffer/Kennedy also did away with mens baseball and golf.  Not to mention they tried to sell the golf course.

Great Vision.

They live in the real world where difficult decisions need to be made.  It's not like they can just put a tax on rich alumni to pay for programs that are a major drain on the budget.

"This confusion partially stems from the way the announcement was made. Not given a separate release, the statement was titled “RMU Charts Strategic Course Headed Into Centennial Year,” with a subhead, “The Beyond 100 plan includes a focus on diversity and inclusion, more campus events, and a reorganization of its athletics programs.” The first line of the statement then reads, “Robert Morris University announced today it will no longer field NCAA Division I men's and women's ice hockey teams as part of a series of strategic initiatives intended to position the university to be amongst the most agile and professionally focused schools in the nation as it prepares for its upcoming 100th anniversary.” - https://www.pghcitypaper.com/pittsburgh/rmu-cuts-mens-womens-hockey-in-shocking-and-confusing-move/Content?oid=19554243

I guess Hockey is too white for the people in charge at RMU.

If Power goes back to Mich next year they will be off the charts juiced. I’m aware of the obvious responses this comment will get....but still, fun time to be a college hockey fan. They could have 2-3 kids picked in the top 5 of this draft. Boy times have changed with these high end kids going the college route.

Are they trying to harden up some teams for the single-elimination tourney that follows?

It would seem like it would be negative toward league revenues (as most leagues have revenues from playoff games go to the league).

Compressing playoffs also allows for another off week during the season.  Including all 11 teams means the number of playoff games is only cut by 1-5.  The third games are often on Sunday nights and not well attended anyway.  Every game being an elimination game certainly heightens the intensity and is good preparation for the NCAAs.

As long as the CHL player doesn't sign a contract with any professional league, they should be able to move to the NCAA and vice versa. A non-signed player shouldn't be punished because the CHL allows a NHL-signed player to play in their league.

The monthly stipend is the other issue, but that's likely to not matter any more. Interestingly, neither Oregon or Alberta ever passed minimum wage exemptions for CHL.
