The Sicatoka Posted November 20, 2014 Posted November 20, 2014 So now you're saying we SHOULD be called the "Flickertails" or the "Peace Gardeners", or the "Roughriders" - which is Red Rivers nickname and mascot then? Seesm that way to me with the links you added... 1. Using a state of ND nickname should be considered.* 2. Using a neighboring state nickname should not. *Flickertails is already dead per Dr. Kelley, but I wouldn't put "Peace Gardeners" past him. And the whole "GFRR" conversation was had here many times before. You'll be able to find it using the site's search capabilities. Quote
The Sicatoka Posted November 20, 2014 Posted November 20, 2014 Smores for short... And with that ... it's lunch time! Quote

How does that sound to everyone here for an NHL team? Quote
90siouxfan Posted November 20, 2014 Posted November 20, 2014 Wheatkings, Sugar Beeters, Barley Pops, Rye *** something along the line of crops would be safe, regionally appropriate, but only slightly less lame than weather items. Thrashers seems to straddle a border here too Quote
90siouxfan Posted November 20, 2014 Posted November 20, 2014 I left Spuds off because I am weird that way Quote
90siouxfan Posted November 20, 2014 Posted November 20, 2014 Wonder if we offend muslems, how it would go, it seems to be a popular trend, mmm, bacon Quote

Fetch Posted November 20, 2014 Posted November 20, 2014 Look up meaning of nation as in Nodak Nation and it seems to be a big no no to the NCAA & PCers Quote
row5seat5 Posted November 20, 2014 Posted November 20, 2014 I like Warhawks,, but have always liked the Wheatkings name from Brandon Quote

The Sicatoka Posted November 20, 2014 Posted November 20, 2014 If we're going to rip off a Canadian junior team ... I like Fernie's "Ghost Riders" name. Their logo would not work, but, we all know who the ghost riders in question are. This is where ScottM's "Auburn" (Tigers / War Eagle) solution comes in: Officially "Ghost Riders", unofficially ... The Sicatoka Posted November 20, 2014 Posted November 20, 2014 ... "Ghost Riders" ... I'm surprised no one has told me " ... the pattern is full." I'd never dug into the legend / mythology behind the Ghost Riders. It's actually kind of interesting (and ties to Norse / Germanic mythology). Quote

dagies Posted November 20, 2014 Posted November 20, 2014 I've always liked that nickname too. I actually love that name. It could be my #1 except that even for insensitive me, I have to agree it's hard to field women's athletics teams using that nickname. 1 Quote

The Sicatoka Posted November 21, 2014 Posted November 21, 2014 I guess from a "flip the bird at the NCAA" perspective I could live with either Ghost Riders (and we know which former riders on the plains we speak of; hint: REA plaza statue) or Black Stripes (I wonder if we could cut a deal with Adidas ... ) And yes, finding a way to "flip the bird" to the NCAA with a new name that still meets their PC criteria would help the name garner some favor with many. The problem: We'd be setting ourselves up to drag the albatross forever. Quote
