Those darn analytics.  Avert your eyes, @Oxbow6 ;)

https://www.grandforksherald.com/sports/und-hockey/analytics-show-how-jackson-blake-is-impacting-und-in-several-ways

Quote

The UND sophomore forward has racked up 52 points in 36 games entering the National Collegiate Hockey Conference playoffs.

Only three UND players in the last 20 years have tallied more points than Blake's current total — Brock Boeser (60) in 2015-16, Matt Frattin (60) in 2010-11 and Ryan Duncan (57) in 2006-07.

Quote
  • Blake's offensive zone entries are 175 by stickhandle, 105 by pass and only five by dump-in.
  • Blake has drawn 21 penalties this season, most on the team. Riese Gaber is second with 14, followed by Dylan James (12), Jackson Kunz (nine) and Hunter Johannes (nine).
  • Blake leads the team in passes to the slot with 51. Owen McLaughlin is second with 41, followed by Jake Livanavage (32), Louis Jamernik V (25) and Jayden Perron (25).
  • Blake's 89% pass completion rate is tied with McLaughlin and Griffin Ness as the best among any forward on the team.
  • Blake also has the best expected goals differential on the team. UND has a plus-18 expected goal differential when Blake is on the ice. Gaber and McLaughlin are at plus-16.

Those are cold hard statistics that have actually played out. Love that stuff.  Just not a fan of the hypothetical would could nonsense that has no actual meaning on true outcomes. If I 3 putt 6 holes (Damn you Donald Ross) and drive one OB on Pinehurst #2 in a couple weeks my x18 will probably by 77 but my actual score will be 85.

The one stat that really jumps out at me because I've mentioned it to bunch of different people over Blake's first two years is that he will never dump the puck in even though sometimes that is the correct and really only play he has. I know he doesn't do it often but to only have dumped it in 5 times all year with how much he has the puck is absolutely crazy to me!

How many times could he have dumped but instead looped back and made another zone entry attempt?

I'm guessing you're not a big fan of the 'Strokes Gained' statistic

Especially in all the close games we have had that went to overtime.  Sometimes the correct play is dumping it in.  In fact in those late game situations it absolutely should be a viable option.  I get that line doesn't have the guys always to dig the puck back out of the corner, but making the opposition go 200 feet near the end of regulation isn't necessarily a bad thing either.

Only if it benefits me

Zmolek leads the league in blocked shots and paces 2nd place by 30 and he doesn't get selected for defensive d-man.

Those all-conference teams are subjective. Wins and titles are not.

It’s not really a defensive defenseman award at this point. Denver has 2 guys as finalists, one of whom is also nominated for offensive defenseman. They should just get rid of the award if they aren’t going to actually award defensive play. No player has won it with less than 13 points. It’s basically an award for a typical 2- way defenseman.

I'm guessing Blake gets both Player and Forward of the Year.
I wouldn't be surprised if Mayotte gets CoTY, but thinking it'll go to Berry with the roster turnover then vaulted to 1st.
Going with Buium for RoTY.
Mbereko for GoTY.
ZBuium for ODoTY.
Can't believe that Zmolek got the shaft for the DDoTY award and isn't a finalist.
Laba or Berg for DFoTY.

North Dakota Fighting Hawks

NCAA Division I Overall Record: 24-10-2 (.694)
Conference Record, NCHC: 15-8-1, 31 points
Home: 17-4-1 / Away: 7-6-1 / Neutral: 0-0-0
Current USCHO Poll: No. 5

The Away record scares me.

L @ BU 2-3
Was tied 2-2 going into the 3rd period.

W @ BU 5-4 OT
UND was up 3-1 in the 2nd and 4-3 in the 3rd.

W @ UMD 4-2
UND up 3-0 after 1st period.  UMD pulled to 3-2 before UND scored an empty netter

W @ UMD 2-0

W @ Denver 7-5
UND was down 4-1 after 1st period and 5-3 after 2nd period.  Rallied with 4 unanswered in the 3rd period.

L @ Denver 3-2 OT
UND was up 2-1 in the 3rd.

W @ SCSU 5-3
UND was up 3-1 after 2nd period, SCSU brought it to 4-3 before an empty netter.

T @ SCSU 3-3
SCSU Was up 2-1 after 2nd and 3-2 in the 3rd.  Berg scored with under 7 mins left to tie it.

W @ Miami 5-4 OT
UND was down 4-2 after 2nd period.  Scored an extra attacker goal to tie it late in 3rd.

W @ Miami 4-1
UND led most of the way, 3-1 after 2nd period.

L @ CC 7-1
Gave up 4 PP goals (on 5 chances) to one of the worst PPs in the country

L @ CC 6-2
UND was up 2-1 after 1st period.  Tied 2-2 after 2nd period.

L @ UNO 3-2
1-1 after 1st and 3-2 after 2nd period.

L @ UNO 4-1
2-0 UNO after 1st period, was 3-0 at one point in the 2nd.

Hard to make much out of it and what the issue(s) may be.

We have only lost 1 game all year when we have scored at least 4 goals ... a 5-4 OT loss to Omaha at home.  Conversely, only 6 of our wins came with less than 4 goals.

The Friday night games against Miami, CC and UNO were terrible.  There were much better efforts on Saturday nights, but mostly the same if not worse results.  The early season road trips weren't that bad, and actually were very good.  We have scored 6 goals in our last 4 road games.  We need to score early and often and win the race to 4 each and every game.

The Away record scares me.

The good news is that UND won't play another "away" game all season.
All that is left is Home and Neutral.

Plus, the big advantage with playing at home...every remaining game that UND will play (assuming they stay the same in PWR) they'll have last line change unless they meet BC or BU in the Frozen Four.

This SOCKS!  I mean sucks - but what about the SOCKS?  Hockey Fashionistas are sad tonight...

Thanks Jake for your service!  Especially adding "Holy Buckets" to UND's Hockey Lexicon...we won't forget that Roseau accent anytime soon.

Tipping back a cold one with Jake would be on my bucket list.  Of all the on-air personalities, his stories fit right up there.

Thanks for your time in the booth!

Thanks Jake!
Guessing Heinert will get called away sooner rather than later too, so we might be looking at a couple new announcers pretty soon.

His first season in the booth was a national title season.  Might as well make his last season a title season too.
Would be a good bookend.  :)

Alex is planning to leave Midco after this weekend, going full time with CBS sports.

There's been some snoozers, some losers, and downright legends in the box, Jake worked his way into a category of his own.

I liked him think that's its something he can pop in and out of over the years as well.

Legend in the making.
