Who is to say who draws the line?

They are free to spend their money however they want.

Especially when it will only cost the arena a fraction of the actual cost thanks to the donation.

It's almost like women's hockey. UND gets grief for having started and trying to have it vs all the schools that never tried.

The Ralph could keep all the extra money in reserve and not donate anything to UND if they so pleased. If they had done that in previous years, I guess we wouldn't be having this discussion.

Donation would be the wrong word here, and that is the problem.  And no, it couldn't.

Yes it could.

And of course it's a donation to UND athletics. That's what non profits do with their excess capital.

Considering the usage agreement requires them to donate money, no, they couldn't keep everything and put it in reserves. And since it is a non-profit for sole purpose of benefiting UND athletics, as it's mission statement reads, just accruing assets on its balance sheet instead of disbursing them would eventually lead to some issues with their non-profit status. They don't have free reign to accumulate a war chest and hold it on their balance sheet.

Fans are still complaining about a fantastic donation and spewing how they would spend other people’s money I see. Good deal.

No.  It's not other people's money.  That's the point.

It's because of things like REA taking 48% of football ticket revenue (I believe that the right number) on top of charging for running the ticket office.  They then spend $2m on a scoreboard for the hockey arena from a fund that includes the football ticket revenue.

Get rid of all the grass and put the roads in places that make sense.  Sure it looks pretty in the summer this way.  But nobody is admiring the landscaping that's covered in snow while they're freezing their ass off in January.

Move the Soccer Field.  It is used 3 and a half months out of the year and hosts 9 home games.  The rest of the time it goes unused.  Mostly during the hockey season.  Not sure why the soccer team couldn't play at Memorial Stadium.  NCAA allows for turf fields.  With the HPC now built, you would think the football and soccer teams could organize practices and soccer games to not interfere with each other.  Turn the soccer field into a parking lot.  Adds more surface lots for the students during the year and adds much needed parking for hockey and other events at the REA.

Because the Ralph obviously wants to do their best to help UND the best they can. So they try and to give what they can at the end of the year.

But it can be as low as $1,000 if they wanted. There is no set amount they have to donate to UND.

Timing would be suspect, as they just spent an entire year rebuilding and replanting it.

Queen McGarry has made it abundantly clear that she wants to help UND HOCKEY only.

Need to put a parking ramp in.

Build a parking ramp, than half way up put in an ice rink, and to top it off  add a hotel. So the boys can get used to playing at that altitude. That is the reason they lost at Canisius.

If that was true the non-profit colleges with absurd endowments in the tens of billions would receive some much needed scrutiny.

...and the people that thought that hockey wasn't going to be priority # 1 with Ralph and his family, including the people that were at the table when the arena contracts were first drawn up, are/were completely detached from reality.

Where do the men’s and women’s basketball teams play?  Where does the volleyball team play?  Where are the women’s soccer locker rooms?

Is Queen McGarry supposed to build her dad’s alma mater a new, free football stadium, too?

Yes.......and give the floundering FB program 48% of the hockey ticket revenue.

Those endowments also pay out absurd amounts of money every year, not "keep all the extra money in reserve and not donate anything to UND if they so pleased", which was what my comment was referring to.

Lol. Fill me in. What's the contract say is the minimum? Oh wait there is non.

REA aims for $500,000.

Or in layman's terms. If average attendance decreases by 500 a game,

"Sorry, no $500,000 "profit" this year."

Since the usage agreement is approved annually, I imagine it's in both parties best interests if the payments back to UND remain at or above the $500K target. There are more open dates at the REA now, should give them some opportunity to diversify their revenue stream so it isn't so reliant on UND athletics.

I'm not good at math. What's 48% of the ticket revenue of the Alerus filled at about 75% capacity at best for at most 6 games each fall?

Just asking for a friend.

with some assumptions:

8,000 seats sold x $15/ticket x 6 games x 48% = $345k  - real money

at that rate it only takes 6 years and you come up with $2m

with all of the $$ the hockey program takes in and spends - why do they need to take fb revenue?  That amount of money would make a big difference for that program.  Small dent for hockey.  Hell - they spend more than that on new locker rooms and scoreboards quite regularly.

If football needs more money, the athletic department will allocate more funds to it. The athletic department determines how much money football gets irrespective of ticket revenue.

And if the athletic department had an extra $345k per year from the fb ticket revenue they would be able to give more to the fb and other programs.

The REA prints out and mails out the football tickets.  Anything over the cost of doing that is directly stealing from the football program.  And that is why Kennedy approched KEM about.

345K a year is a lot of money.  What was the donation amount by the Engelstad foundation allocated to the football program last year?  I'm not great at Math either, but I am pretty sure it was less that 345K.
