Popular Post Oxbow6 Posted December 5, 2024 Popular Post Posted December 5, 2024 Regardless of who's hired.....the defense needs a complete overhaul and the offensive needs legit D1 WRs and QB. .....other than that this program is in great shape. 8 Quote

For decades UND has settled coaching vacancies internally or with heavy connections, would be nice to see them not do that for once. Remember … inbreeding? Jerry Olson was a asst coach who took over from Marc Helling. After multiple bowl games and a 12 yr win streak against NDSU, UND was struggling and was in the midst of a 7 game losing streak to NDSU. Olson turned the program around highlighted by the win over #1 ranked Bison in the rain, in Fargo where the Bison finished with negative yardage. Under Olson the Sioux were Camelia Bowl Champs in 1972 and ranked #1 in nation in 1975 before being upset in the playoffs. Gene Murphy played here, was an assistant for many years, no HC experience. He took over a program that was struggling. Was .500 1st yr and Conf Champ second yr, beat NDSU both years. Behrns was DC, a great recruiter but after initial success the program suffered a long stretch of failed expectations and after initial success against NDSU the 12 year losing streak started. Roger Thomas, former OC returned to turn the program around and in addition to conference champions, playoff contenders, they began the 10-3 streak over NDSU. Next was Dale Lennon, former player and asst coach who led the team to conference titles, playoff appearances, and 2 National Championship games with 1 title. Mussman was an assistant coach whose struggles were skewed by the transition of the SU’s then USD to FCS leaving us at a major recruiting disadvantage. Lastly was Bubba, a former coach. No reason to review but there were some successes and also struggles So yes, I remember “inbreeding”. For those whose philosophy is not to consider anyone with UND ties, wouldn’t that mean we wouldn’t have hired Olson, Murphy, Thomas or Lennon? That is why you also consider those with UND ties. Because it doesn’t always work out, you don’t hire candidates just because they have UND ties. 7 Quote

Hawkster Posted December 5, 2024 Posted December 5, 2024 There's no use speculating on who'd be the best until we know who applied. Quote

If they don't release the names, IMO it just because they don't want to take heat for screwing up, again. We need to know this information, so we can HOLD our AD accountable. 1 3 Quote

You burn your candidate pool if you're going to release a bunch of names and people that don't want others (like their current bosses) to know they are out looking at other opportunities. It has nothing to do with UND "protecting" themselves. At least one of the serious candidates that was on Tom's list is in that boat. 9 Quote

I didn't realize that when I signed up for my nameless/faceless account that I now held the power to hold a university AD accountable for decisions he makes for the job he was hired for! Let the guy do his job, if he hires a dud he'll be held accountable by his boss. I can guarantee you that nobody at UND wants to make the wrong hire and will certainly interview the qualified candidates that are interested in the job and hire the one that interviews the best. Most names being thrown around here all make sense, but they need to be interested in the job and then interview well to earn the job. Not our place to hold an AD accountable for his hire, that's the job of their boss. Support the new hire and the program regardless of who we felt was the best candidate. 1 9 Quote

Chaves has a very poor track record of hiring coaches. That is why people are skeptical. 2 Quote

Understood and I don't deny that. I just found it comical that there is any sense of power to hold him accountable from people who post on a fan site. Unless we are paying his checks we have no pull. Can only hope he makes a great choice and support the guy who is hired. 3 1 Quote
