University of North Dakota Hockey 2017-18 Season

The issue with this team all season has been consistency. We have seen the flashes of what this team can do. UND is not going to be a high scoring team, but when they play their game, they can product enough to match their strong defense. This was by far the best series I've seen them play in a while; with the exception of some bad penalties and poor penalty kill in the 2nd period of Friday, the team was very encouraging. Play like they did this past weekend and we should be able to sweep Miami and, at least, split with SCSU. The key is "Play like we did this past weekend".

This has been a tough year to watch overall, but the season is not lost yet. Last time we were on the edge of making the tourney we ended up in the Frozen Four, and as much fun as it was to win the tourney in '16 we were also pretty heavy favorites. It would be really fun to make the tourney and make some noise as underdogs. First step, win and dominate against Miami. Let's see how Berry and his upperclassmen can lead this team.

Since you vote for 3, throw a vote to Bitzer from Bemidji State(Moorhead HS) and McLain from Bowling Green(Brainerd HS) as they are 2 quality hockey players and more importantly quality kids!

Unless they have more votes than Pogs....:whistling:

*which they both currently do

Here's a telling stat for this year's team, which probably is no surprise to anyone. The top three scorers by ppg are Wolanin .8333/g (T87), Gersich .7333/g (T134) and Mismash .6429/g (T229). The numbers are before last weekend. There were a couple of teams that the top three were close to these numbers - '14-'15 Cags .8571 (T46), Parks .7619 (T69) and J. Schmaltz .6667 (T106) and '13-'14 Rocco .9286 (T35), Parks .7143 (T106) and MacMillan .6842 (T154). I went back to the '05-'06 season. There were 4 teams where the top three were all over 1 ppg - '15-'16 (CBS), '10-'11 (Frattin, Knight and Gregoire), '06-'07 (DOT), and '05-'06 (Stafford, Zajac and Oshie).

...and Oxbow deserves some respect.  He single handedly united the boys on Saturday and kept this team on the bubble!

I'll get ahold of my Instagram bruddas to see if I can get them to pick it up down the stretch.................

Anyone know the last time UND didn't have a single player in the top 50 in PPG at the end of a season?

In 13-14, Rocco was 35th.

In 14-15, Drake was in a 7 way tie for 46th.

Correction: That was total points.

Pts per game has Rocco 67th and Drake tied for 74th

Yup.......I got that. Wondering if there was ever a team that didn't have a single top 50 ppg guy. Wolanin isn't real close to top 50 right now. He does have the offensive skill to put up points in a hurry but it's difficult to do consistently from the blueline.

This year has been a tale of two seasons.

Before Christmas:

  • Average Offense
  • Good Defense
  • Good Goaltending
  • Average PP
  • Great Penalty Kill

After Christmas:

  • Average Offense
  • Good Defense
  • Average Goaltending
  • Average PP
  • Average / Poor PK

At the beginning of the year, they were finding ways to win, second half they are finding ways to lose. Obviously you have exceptions in the first / second half, but overall, the difference has been (1) Goaltending (2) Penalty Kill.

It's going to be tough watching this team miss the playoffs this year, but the one thing that will be comforting is clearly by the Pairwise, but also just overall, they weren't that far off. Early departures will be big for this team this off-season.

Wolanin most likely will lead this team in scoring when the season ends. Will be first time a defenseman has lead UND in scoring since '82-'83. Can look at that a lot of different ways.

Well. It helps that he has played in every single game this season unlike most of the team...
