I have no problem with what Bubba is doing either. I don't agree Mollberg has had any any more opportunity than anyone else. Mollberg came in and after a decent spring and what seemed to be a decent fall camp sat behind Bartles for the first few games. They pulled Bartles and  he led the comeback against Montana .  Neither QB knew from week to week who was going to play and the play calling for both Bartles and Mollberg in addition to poor protection by the Oline hampered both of them. Neither Bartles nor Mollberg should be judged too harshly when you consider the Oline they have played behind and the beating they both have taken the last two  years. I think Mollberg was close to showing his true potential last fall before he got hurt.  With the potential we have a QB with these three guys and if what you say is true,  I have to wonder why we aren't seeing the improvement we should should expect from each of them.  We need to be able to develop our QB's.

Is Joe actually 100% healthy? I find it hard to believe that at full go he'd be 3rd string.

I find this curious, too. We have a coaching specialist for virtually every position group except arguably the most important one -- the field general -- the QB. So what we do have is a situation where the OC is tasked with overseeing and planning for the entire offensive side of the ball, and oh by they way, now and again, he tries to give the QBs the support they need. It might be nice to have someone who could work more full-time with the QBs so when Coach Rudy does what he is supposed to and floats around to oversee all his position groups, there is still someone competent at the helm guiding and mentoring the QBs.

Very good point!!

I thought when Cindy got the ax Bubba would hire a WR coach and Freund would be the QB coach.........I was dead wrong.

I support the coaching staff's decision to go with Studsrud.  I trust their judgment on this.  I also know that a UND QB hasn't started every game of a season since Klosterman in 2001 so we'll likely need at least one if not both Mollberg and Bartels.  To those who think they should transfer over this, I'm just going to say there would be  a few less banners hanging at the Alerus if guys like Joe Wilson, Chris Belmore, Reed Manke, and Lee Groeschl had that kind of attitude.

Good post.

This QB thing could go 6 different directions this year.  We need all 3 committed and ready to go.

Who said any of the players were thinking they would transfer over this??  You do realize this is a fan blog. I would think all 3 of these QB's are focused on doing what they can to help this team win. I haven't spoken to any of them have you? I made the comment that I didn't think the 2 juniors would want to finish their careers backing up an underclassman cuz they are both good enough to play elsewhere.  That has nothing to do with what the players thinks.  I also didn't say I thought they should transfer.  Fan blogs are discussions about the team, the games, the play calling etc.  I also support the coaching staff's decision which doesn't mean people won't have concerns.  Had Mollberg or Bartles been chosen people would have also raised questions.

I love the lively QB debate and banter. Reading all of your comments, here are my takeaways:

  • None of us have a better picture than the coaches, and we don't know what we don't know.
  • As a true freshman, jumping from Benilde-St. Margaret's and MN class 4A football to the FCS/Big Sky as Studsrud did is a big jump, no matter who you are. While I don't know this for certain, I'm guessing he wasn't even getting the majority of the snaps on the scout team before he was called on to start.
  • No decision is permanent. If a change needs to be made, it can be made.
  • Last year's offensive line was patchwork at best. Just too many injuries and guys playing out of position. They rallied at the end of the season, and I've got more confidence in this group.
  • A productive running game is critical, especially as Studsrud gets more game experience. The fewer tough spots he's put into early on, the better for everyone.
  • Studsrud sounds like a name for a linebacker.
  • Can we all at least agree that it's Bartels, not Bartles?

Let the debate resume...

It is hard to second guess Bubba on starting Studsrud since he has way more info than we do.  However, the reasons it happened leads to speculation on different scenerios, not all of them wonderful.  Best case = Studsrud won the position by excellent play in a spirited competition (I don't think this is what happened).  Other possibilities include having no one looking great and taking the position and coaches pick Studsrud because he is the youngest and has the most room to grow.  Or ...  Bartels and/or Molberg are not 100%.  OR ... in spite of being red-shirt Juniors neither Bartels or Molberg have developed much and neither has done well enough to be number 1.  In any case I feel it is concerning that neither of our highly-touted Juniors have taken the reins.

Lets have it

Did this chart come from somebody within the football administration or is it Miller's best guess? Anybody know for sure? I wouldn't be surprised if some on the 2 deep don't even make the trip to Wyo.

That was released by UND. You can tell by the logo in the middle of the paper. If you saw the very bottom of the page you would see the schedule for the next game. Here is the same page from the UND Sports web site, http://www.undsports.com/pdf9/3742006.pdf.

I think this is the most plausible scenario. I would likely make the same decision if I were in the coach's shoes.

If you have 3 QB's and none of them are far and away better than the other, you go with the guy who is the youngest in my mind. Especially in a year where UND is expected to be improved, but is maybe a year or two away from making big noise.

When a coaching staff comes in, it takes 2-3 solid recruiting classes to really get "your guys" into the system to execute your stuff. Because of that, I would imagine Bubba and co believe that next year or the year after is the year they want to identify as the year the program really takes off. With that in mind, they can either play a Junior this year/Senior next year and run the risk of having a brand new starting QB the year they have identified as "the year" ie the 2017 campaign. Or they can go with a young guy this year and have a 3 year starter at the helm during the 2017 campaign.

I think it's a really smart decision to go with the young guy if the other guys aren't vastly superior, in this scenario.

It might not be the staffs main reason, but you'd think it's got to be in the back of thier minds. It's one of the first things I thought of when I heard Studsrud was starting.
