darell1976 Posted August 9, 2014 Posted August 9, 2014 Leave it to our good friends at the University of Marxism-Leninism, er, Minnesota, to lead the charge to prevent the NFL Redskins from wearing their uniforms at TCF Bank Stadium this season. Of course, they'd gladly play the Florida State Seminoles without so much as a whimper of disgust over that particular nickname. Redskins will tell them if they don't like it the Vikings can forfeit. SWSiouxMN Posted August 9, 2014 Posted August 9, 2014 You guys do realize that the last few times they played the Noles in bball was the ACC/Big 10 Challenge? Which they really don't get much of a say in anyways. Quote

SWSiouxMN Posted August 10, 2014 Posted August 10, 2014 I'm aware of those games as well...what does that have to do with football and TCF Bank Stadium? In the overall scheme, nothing really. I was just focusing on an example that would made that "policy" null and void (there is more than football). In this context it doesn't apply. Beside the only connection between the Gophs and Florida State football right now is a certain recruiting coach who likes his chili hot. Quote

If you believe in it then you fight for it.. otherwise it's just empty. which is what I think of when I think of the University of Minnesota. Only a good cause when its not too inconvenient.. Quote

Don't accuse anyone of communism or socialism on this board! At least I assume it's similar to the stance on accusations regarding sympathizing with the Nazi party Quote

My point is the obvious hypocritical stance (or lack thereof) of the U of Minnesota...standing up against racist symbols...well, unless our policy says they're acceptable racist symbols. Quote

Also not sure you were aware of this, but Minnesota's policy on playing schools with certain nicknames was amended to accomodate Florida State. 1 Quote

MafiaMan Posted August 10, 2014 Posted August 10, 2014 Acutally no I didn't. Blame my youth and nativity. Not blaming you at all. U of M (and others) all amended their policies regarding Native "mascot" teams after the NCAA gave their seal of approval to the Seminoles. I'd actually give Minnesota, Wisconsin, or Iowa credit for taking a forfeit against FSU to prove their point. Instead, their crusade to end racist "mascots" rings hollow. Quote
Hayduke Posted August 10, 2014 Posted August 10, 2014 Redskins will tell them if they don't like it the Vikings can forfeit. Might be a better option for the Vikings anyway.. Quote
Chewey Posted August 10, 2014 Posted August 10, 2014 As soon as Betty McCollum, the U of M and the PC crybabies pay the MN taxpayers back for all of the $$$ that went into the stadium and as soon as they refund the Vikings their money ($300,000 per game), they can do whatever they want. Obviously, they're unfamiliar with the NFL - or at least they were when the contract between the Vikings and the U was signed. Gosh, I think there might be a team called the "Redskins" there somewhere and the "Chiefs" too. Contracts between NFL teams and contracts/leases don't mean a whole lot to the PC academics. I'll be sure to schedule that game on my calendar and where a Redskins jersey or other attire. Really, this is just nonsense. If they wanted to have the "you can't where that, sell that, or publish that" baloney, they could have grown a pair and required those terms to be inserted into the lease. Take the money from the Vikings but then make some hollow point about a nickname for political reasons. They know that there's nothing that the Vikings can or will do other than give them some song and dance in writing about not being really able to do anything. Quote

The Redskins is a despicable name for any team let alone a team representing our nation's capital. One day years from now people will look back with disbelief that these Native American nicknames lasted as long as they did. If you people want to willingly choose to be on the wrong side of history be my guest. But you have know idea how bad this thread looks to the average visitor. And the idea that the U should forfeit a basketball game in the Big Ten/ACC challenge is so beyond ridiculous I don't even know what to say. The U has ZERO control over who we play in that contest every year and forfeiting an important game that could be the difference in making the NCAA tourney would be a huge disservice to the U, the players, the fans, and the confrence itself. Forfeiting that game is not an option and only fans of small time athletic programs would think different. Quote

So Minnesota picks and chooses when it's offended by the exploitation of NA nicknames/monikers/white guys riding on horses with full head dress and spiking spears into the turf? Also, quit calling yourself "The U". There is only one and it sure as hell isn't in Minnesota. 3 Quote

There are NA that have no problem with Redskins, Indians, Braves, Chiefs, Sioux! The U of Minnesota should take a stand and say the Redskins cannot play in their stadium with that name....then we can watch the Redskins play the Vikings in another stadium. The NFL (especially the Redskins organization) will NOT gave in to the U of Minnesota. Quote
