Both parents were teachers and his Dad was his HS hockey coach. Very smart, tough hard nosed defenseman. He also played RB in FB. Gained over 1000 yds in both his Jr and Sr seasons. Quick, fast, heavy hitter. He and Reed Manke were key players who led DL to the 2001 state championship. A honor student. Played 3 yrs in USHL for Lincoln, then 4yrs at St. Cloud. Voted A as Soph and C his Jr and Sr years. All WCHA defenseman and I believe he was an academic All-American. Played professional hockey in Norway and Finland before assistant at StCloud then Minn. Hired by Josh Morton to start Augie program and help oversee building their new arena. Watched player interviews. He makes them a bit nervous cuz he is no nonsense and very smart but they respect and like him. Gopher fans want him back. He is a hell of a recruiter. Quiet guy, nice guy. Players will play for him cuz they won’t want to let him down. Excellent teacher. I haven’t asked if he is interested and I won’t. I have no idea if UND is interested in him but he should be considered. I was told by a Gopher fan today that Raboin is very well regarded by the Gophers and he hoped that he would be the next coach when Motzko retires. He said he is an excellent recruiter and landed Knies and Cooley Quote

Popular Post tnt Posted Tuesday at 01:52 AM Popular Post Posted Tuesday at 01:52 AM If it turns out to be Raboin, I don’t think he would bring any players with him, but who knows. Seems incredibly short sided if you think there’s a viable candidate and you don’t at least see if they get knocked off in the regionals. The way I see it, nobody is going to enter on Sunday that wasn’t going to already. If they are going to at least hear the new coach out, they would wait an extra couple days. I do think waiting until after the Frozen Four would be too long, so those 4 would be out. You start the interview process with the other candidates as scheduled. The regionals end this Sunday, the same day as the portal opens, so yes, it wouldn't be too much to ask for players to wait for a coach eliminated this weekend. It also wouldn't be asking too much to wait for a coach who is in the Frozen Four. It's only a couple extra weeks, & if they decide to bolt anyway after hearing the new coach, they still have all summer to get acclimated at their new school. 1 Quote

I’m definitely in the young, inspiring hire camp, but I don’t know much about him. I get he was on staff for some successful teams at St. Cloud and Minny, but it’s always difficult to know how much impact an assistant has. He was the primary recruiter at Minn when they were loaded with talent. I was lucky enough to be around him when he was recruiting juniors for Augustana first year team. He knew he wasn’t going to get the same high end talent but he knew what he was looking for and was recruiting a kid that other teams had passed on. The same teams would love to poach same player now. Connects with 18 year olds almost immediately when he talks to them. His current players vouch for him unequivocally. 4 Quote

There was obviously an agreement put in place long before this morning for him to be the next Gophers BB coach. It appears this may be the case with UND hockey…this announcement of a new hockey coach appears like it may have been in the works for some time. As for the portal deadline…a simple message to players advisors of “no need to rush; you may make a huge mistake” would sufficiently keep them in place until the end Frozen Four if need be. No player would bolt the place they chose until after knowing the facts; especially if a home run hire is eminent. I have felt for a while that it looked like the coaches were "playing out the string" for a while now. The fast time on the posting strongly suggests there's a candidate in mind, with some discussions btw AD and Candidate. So I could also surmise that Berry et al found out about those discussions ... Some people said they thought Hennessey sounded like he knew the time was short for his friend Berry. Think someone said on the radio that Hennessey asked Ferschweiler what schools he wouldn’t want to coach and he said Minnesota and North Dakota. Did anyone else hear that, because someone just talked about it when discussing Berry’s firing. Don’t know if true or not, but it seems an odd question to ask someone who has a long term contract. 2 Quote

Reading the comments, Berry could have gone another 10 years without an NCAA win and they would still be satisfied as long as he had an overall winning record. Top 20 program isn’t what this program should be happy with. 4 Quote

And, by the way, the Hawks only won one NCHC postseason tournament in that span — when after-effects of COVID pushed the event to Grand Forks. In St. Paul? Flop City. UND won five Penrose Cups under Berry, awarded for winning the NCHC regular-season title. Noteworthy, but that is all. A program with eight national championships and 22 Frozen Four appearances needn't lower its standards to overtly celebrating regular-season accomplishments. People not happy with what he wrote but he's right. When the white banners start feeling like a participation banners with the lack of success in the post-season, a change is needed. 10 Quote

The game has changed and it starts with finding a talented young coach(s) that can get out and recruit/relate to these young players. So, your plan is then to hire a young coach with absolutely no experience when it comes to recruiting? Just admit you don't care about the program why don't you. 1 Quote
