siouxweet Posted March 23 Posted March 23 It used to mean something to the players to play well in front of a ton of green in the stands, not anymore. We are in a different generation it seems where the name on the back of the jersey is more important than the one on the front. This shift has happened in the last 10 years or so. 2 Quote

There was a ton of green in the stands? That was the empty seats. The looks of it showed half empty building. Quote

Went to the first couple NCHC tourneys at the Target Center and realized right away - THIS SUCKS and never went back and THAT SUCKS because this tournament used to be the BEST EVER! For the following reasons... --It was a HOCKEY EVENT! Every team would bring all the fans they could and the venue would be packed or close to it. Greatest college hockey post season environment ever! Even beat out the FF most years. --Michigan Tech Band would show up and play their ASSES OFF around the arena although their team almost never made it. Priceless! --The X would be PACKED and CRAZY for rivalry games - Wisco cheeseheads - GOOF Fans - et al. Screaming and insanity in the aisles. The goal was to be obnoxious and give as good as you'd get! So would our fans! Now it's a tepid environment at best...an environment that doesn't seem to inspire our team at all. It's time to move on to a new thing I'd say. Bring home sites on! 5 Quote

Oxbow6 Posted March 23 Posted March 23 UND has reached the Frozen Faceoff nine times. Their semifinal record is 2-7. Let that soak in. 1 Quote

SIOUXELEVENS Posted March 23 Posted March 23 If Berry didn’t win in 2016 would he still be the head coach ? His teams do not finish well at all #Berryswoon. Quote

Look at his numbers. He’s had moments, sure. Him playing last night makes zero difference. Even Bubs knows that. Quote

Those throwing Hedquist under the bus for yesterday need look no further than our team defense the last half of this year. 1 9 Quote

Technically 8 times as in the Covid pod at the Ralph all teams were there. Their record outside of the Ralph has gone down the toilet on all levels the last 8 years. Quote

Dustin Posted March 23 Posted March 23 Historically, the 3 biggest fan bases in college hockey are North Dakota, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. When all three of them were in the same conference and the conference tournament was easily accessible to all 3 (MSP), plus sprinkle in other Minnesota schools' fans, you had a recipe for success. When the conferences split those teams into the Big Ten and NCHC, both conferences tried (unsuccessfully) to replicate the WCHA Final Five with big venue, neutral site conference tournaments. Geography was definitely part of the problem for both conferences, with fewer teams spread over a larger area. I also think Wisconsin having down years right after the 2014 split, and UND having some down years after the national championship, contributed to the demise of both conference tournaments. The Big Ten saw the writing on the wall first, with the NCHC still counting on UND to make the event successful. But now, having watched Big Ten home site playoff games, I have no doubt this is the right direction for the NCHC. Someone posted earlier about buying out the Xcel contract for 2025, and that's a viable option, I'm in favor. Another thing about 2024, in particular. Until last night, UND's path to the National Championship went through St. Paul, Sioux Falls, and back to St. Paul. I personally know fans that decided not to go to the Frozen Faceoff, saving for the potential Frozen Four appearance at the same venue. I think a lot people were also excited for the Sioux Falls regional, which also probably contributed to last night's dismal attendance. Not everyone can go to a hockey tournament 3 out of 4 weekends, as much as we'd maybe like to. 1 Quote
