NoiseInsideMyHead Posted December 4, 2019 Posted December 4, 2019 Figured he might as well have a dedicated thread on here. Welcome to Grand Forks! The real question...will he set up a Sioux Sports account? Quote

UND Fan Posted December 4, 2019 Posted December 4, 2019 From what I understand.... The committee made a concerted effort to find someone with ND ties but, for some reason, there were no legitimate candidates. Armacost came across very well - genuine, personable, more than capable, etc. He was not the best of an average group of finalists - he, and his credentials, were very impressive. Importantly, for those of us on this site, he is quite pro-athletics. 3 Quote
gfhockey Posted December 4, 2019 Posted December 4, 2019 I think we can relate more to a guy who had a nickname uncle Andy vs honorable Mark 4 Quote

We absolutely have to have someone at the top who understands what a great marketing tool athletics is, especially in this social media era. Quote
Popular Post HawksHoops Posted December 4, 2019 Popular Post Posted December 4, 2019 From an email sent to the UND Community December 3, 2019 Dear Members of the University of North Dakota Community, I write this note as I fly home to join Kathy back in Colorado Springs. This day has been a whirlwind of joy and excitement as I learned the news of the board’s decision to appoint me as President of UND. I am honored and humbled to serve you and the state of North Dakota in this important role. During this entire search process, I have learned much about the University and the people who commit themselves to it: the students, faculty, staff members, coaches, alumni, and citizens. Yet, I fully realize what I have observed during these visits only scratches the surface of all that happens on campus. There is much more to learn and much to discover about the great work taking place at the University of North Dakota. Thank you for your warm welcome and your active engagement in the search process. I was amazed at the number of people who had been streaming today’s events in their offices. As I hurried through the halls of the EERC to grab a green tie and prepare for the public announcement, people shouted their congratulations as I sped by. Their enthusiasm for the selection process and the future of the University is immeasurable and represents the passion that each of you feels for this great university. Kathy and I are eager to arrive on campus and to become an integral part of this wonderful community. Good luck during the remaining days of the semester! With gratitude and respect, Andy Armacost GO FIGHTING HAWKS! 7 Quote
Frozen4sioux Posted December 5, 2019 Posted December 5, 2019 Well to me no huge red flags are present or reasons to be outraged by the selection in any way, so here's to giving the guy a shot and hoping he has a good long and successful tenure. Lots of difficult issues ahead in higher education but i think now is a great time to be coming into the position. Welcome and good luck! 1 Quote

True. Only red flag was this: https://www.csindy.com/TheWire/archives/2018/08/17/air-force-academy-dean-of-faculty-announces-retirement-amid-exodus-of-stem-professors Quote

I'd like to hope we are beyond that in ND ..... but i know that is not going to be the case in the next decade. Hopefully he can use his experiences to better handle those situations as they arise. And really after the last few presidents its not going to be tough to lool good in comparison, and ..... the further removed we are from the last well liked president, the better to not be living in the shadow. Popular Post Siouxperkick Posted December 5, 2019 Popular Post Posted December 5, 2019 I am looking forward to seeing what changes Armacost brings to the university. He seems like a very smart guy (MIT graduate) and has a lot of experience with research and budget issues. Hopefully he can expand our aerospace department and bring new unity to the GFAFB. Congrats, Uncle Andy! 1 5 Quote

This article was the local CSprings publication announcing his retirement, making mention that it happened after a "mass exodus" of STEM faculty, NOT as a result. It isn't even worth speculation that this is a red flag. Considering today's digital age, the only way that I, personally, would consider a "red flag" on this topic is if more was furnished speaking to his elaborate and direct involvement/influence over the faculty's departure. It is unfair to Dr. Armacost if we draw conclusions with little to no information backing them. He is esteemed, accomplished academically and professionally, and well-regarded amongst his former colleagues, and this is all joined by proven leadership capability in Higher Education. As @UND Fan, @Siouxperkick, and @Frozen4sioux have all respectively put it, this is a great hire and we should be extremely optimistic when it comes to the outlook of UND on the short and long-term. I know I am, and could only hope that any pessimism will decrease with his tenure. 4 Quote

Just saying, we have the Ralph, we have the Betty,....... but... the UND LEM HPC has a heck of a ring to it! 1 Quote

I haven't been able to find any articles saying they have. Quote

Makes sense to appreciate the relationship and see what they would be interested being a part of building in the future. I just applaud an approach to the relationship that doesnt start from a public tone of ungratefulness and conflict. Quote

90siouxfan Posted February 8, 2020 Posted February 8, 2020 Maybe I am alone on this, but I find it appalling for people to disparage a large donor based on how they direct their donation or the amount that is given. 2 Quote

Kab Posted February 8, 2020 Posted February 8, 2020 I believe the Engalstads give a lot of money that the public doesn’t hear about they should have some say in how the money is used but shouldn’t be able set set university policies Quote

Vegas_Sioux Posted February 8, 2020 Posted February 8, 2020 Not sure if completely paid for by the Engelstads but the Huck Olson in thief was spearheaded by Ralph. Not only the building of the arena but the naming of it as well. Quote
