So who would UND hire?

- Eric Schmidt - 1st year as DC at San Diego State. Currently they’re 3-8, giving up 29.45ppg and 422.9 yards per game. Not great, but 1st year as DC there.

- Danny Freund - 1st year as Co-OC at SDSU but not the primary play caller. Offense is averaging 36.58ppg. No clue how credit he’s due, if any. He’s my guy but understand the skepticism.

- Isaac Fruechte - 1st year as OC here. Think he’s done a decent to good job. Offense is averaging 30.83ppg. People aren’t a fan of his QB choice. I think he will be a successful coach going forward but not sure it’s the right time to be the head coach.

- Tony Annese - Ferris State head coach, #1 team in D2. 132-21 record but he’s 63 years old. Maybe his son Steve? Not sure how much influence he has had in their success.

- Tyler Roehl - if you can’t beat them, hire them? I know he’s now at Iowa State but many years in the NDSU program and knows how to win. Many voiced their opinion for him to take over after Entz left. Many also wanted him canned. I’d say this one’s unlikely.

- Luke Schleussner - 2nd year as OC at Idaho, was our OC last year of Muss. Known as a great recruiter. Idaho is averaging 28.08ppg this year and 32.31 last year.

- Josh Davis - 1st year as OC at USD, was previously at SDSU as the pass game coordinator. Averaging 37ppg.

- Travis Johansen - 6th season as USD’s DC. Holding teams to 14.94ppg. Was previously the head coach at Grand View (NAIA) where he had a record of 61-11.

- Jesse Bobbit - 2nd season as SDSU’s DC. Held teams to 12.42ppg this year and 9.27ppg last year. An SDSU alum with previous coaching stop at Washington State as a grad assistant and then quality control coach.

I am sure there are many others but I’m more interested in talking about who rather than talking about Bubba right now. We will see if this is even necessary this year but this thread and the need for a new head coach is not going to die just because the athletic department says Bubba isn’t leaving.

Not sure on personalities, but Johansen and Bobbit would be my top two. Both Coordinators of elite Missouri Valley units.

Are we ok with Schleussner or Schmidt?

Schmidt getting paid more than UND could afford, I doubt he leaves.

So will it be from this list? Who we adding to it?

The guys with the USD and SDSU connections intrigue me the most.  They would know and share the frustrations of trying to beat NDSU.  Eric and Luke have connections to some of the darkest days of UND football, so I am a little leery with those two.

Haven’t ever met Bobbit, but I have met Johansen. Solid guy, would be a good candidate to consider.

Oh look I guess Chaves isn't anything like people talked about on this website.

I do wonder sometimes how many on here have actually had a meaningful conversation with Chaves

Let’s be real here. My guess is Bubba was told he needs to step down or be removed. I have to believe the pressure was surely on him.

i think this is accurate....he didn't have much say

Schmidt left and made some real connections while gone.   To be part of Deboer’s staff and those relationships built make it pretty easy for me to look past his time here.  I’m not ruling him out.

Likely some other intriguing options as well.  Great to be making this hire with the facilities in place.   Guys at rival MVFC schools can stay there.

So in less than a week after his press conference in which he basically said the status quo will continue he has an about face and decided to step down. Dont buy it but that’s just my opinion.

Schmidt is probably the only one with heavy UND ties that I’d be okay with for this reason, but I still think others with successful head coaching experience at lower levels and the desire to move up to FBS in the future (think the DeBoer type) should be heavily heavily considered first. May have to kindly say no to Freund, Fruechte, and Luke Schleusner.

Possibility, of him stepping down is end of year meetings with players and some $external$ dialogue. A coach should leave with the program in a better position then when they came. If he would have stayed, that may not be true.

I would agree but SDSU (San Diego) being crappy and lacking talent helps UND's case.  Schmidt could be looking at 1) Next HC at UND or 2) next year as DC and potentially fired if that program doesn't turn it around.  Never hurts to look more than your current pay check down the road.  If SDSU had a winning record and top or improving D Schmidt probably not interested in UND at all.

You think Schmidt got the offer to go to Bama? If he did I imagine he wished he took it

I am not so sure we need strong ties to UND…some fresh eyes might be good. Are we keeping OC, DC, and special teams coaches? Sometimes more than one leaves.

I do not think Eric S would come back…. But I don’t know.

Our OC and DC need to step up on recruiting….

Bubba bleeds green and will do a good job in his new role.
