Popular Post farce poobah Posted May 2, 2016 Popular Post Posted May 2, 2016 Brad Schlossman with a great piece of storytelling. Worth reliving that night, on the inside. Kudos and enjoy! http://www.grandforksherald.com/sports/und-hockey/4021670-und-hockey-24-hours-title 8 Quote
farce poobah Posted May 2, 2016 Author Posted May 2, 2016 Showing my age, but my favorite part was Gino's motivational speech. I would be a big fan of Gino Gasparini, since the fall of 1977 when I hit campus. He was an assistant coach on the side, and as luck would have it also taught a golf class at Ray Richards that I enrolled in. I found him to be a charismatic speaker, an intense personality, and a pretty good golf coach. I was among those happy when Carl Miller named him head coach for the next season (1978-1979). Kudos to Brad Berry for strengthening the travelling party, with a guy who was 8-2 in Frozen Fours during his tenure at UND. 3 Quote
Cratter Posted May 2, 2016 Posted May 2, 2016 Had me a laugh out loud moment.... Quote A couple of blocks into their walk, two men pulled over in a beat-up sedan from the 1980s. The men rolled down the window and asked Chyzyk and Sanderson if they needed a ride somewhere. One of them said he was a member of the ice crew at Amalie Arena, but neither player recognized him. They took the offer anyway and jumped in the back seat with the trophy. Quote
snova4 Posted May 2, 2016 Posted May 2, 2016 I've read this 3 times already today. Amazing article, great storytelling and written in a way that made me feel like I was there with the players. Schlossman should get an award for this one. 2 Quote

Popular Post MafiaMan Posted May 2, 2016 Popular Post Posted May 2, 2016 Quote With 26.6 seconds left, there was a whistle. Berry put all four seniors on the ice. The fifth was LaDue, a junior who everyone knew was the most likely to turn pro. Sanderson, a forward, lined up at the defense position. He skated out to the faceoff dot and his mind raced through his four years at UND. He thought about being a healthy scratch for 117 of 126 games in his first three years at school. He thought about all of those nights when the team played on the road and he was by himself in The Hockey Academy shooting pucks to get better. He thought about the times when he wondered whether it would all work out. “Then, you’re lining up with a few seconds left about to win a national championship,” Sanderson said. How many of us would have mailed it in and found something else to do after three years of college - and having played in 9 out of a possible 126 games? Wow. That's dedication and perserverance, Mr. Sanderson. Thanks for sticking it out. 13 Quote

nodakvindy Posted May 2, 2016 Posted May 2, 2016 Pretty sure there will be an award in the future for Brad for that piece. Great writing. 1 Quote
4evrSIOUX Posted May 2, 2016 Posted May 2, 2016 Wow, amazing article. I was in Tampa and the article gave me chills. THANK YOU BRAD! You should definitely get an award for this! 1 Quote

dagies Posted May 2, 2016 Posted May 2, 2016 Absolutely fantastic piece. Read it multiple times. So many great nuggets of interest to someone who enjoys learning "the rest of the story" besides just what happens on the ice. Farce Poobah mentioned the Gasparini bit as his favorite. I probably have too many to mention, but little tidbits like how Cam Johnson's feeling on the red carpet, or how he was nervous for the first game but not the 2nd.....Sanderson and Chyzyk jumping in a random car to grab a bit to eat, Berry calling Hak first thing back in his room, the bit about the AC for the locker room, etc. And hats off for a tight beginning and ending to the story. The ending just blew me away. 1 Quote
Siouxperfan7 Posted May 2, 2016 Posted May 2, 2016 We have one of the absolute best beat writers not only in college hockey, but in all of college sports. We really are lucky to have a guy like Schloss covering this team. Only hope that he will turn down the offers from bigger markets he is bound to get(or has already gotten, who knows) and stick around and cover the hockey team that we all love. Brad is a young guy and would be great to see him cover this team for the next 20-30 years!! Great article, great team!! 2 Quote
UNDColorado Posted May 2, 2016 Posted May 2, 2016 I hope the Herald is giving him a big raise, otherwise I fear someone else will snatch him up. Quote
mikejm Posted May 2, 2016 Posted May 2, 2016 Schlossman is a world-class performer. There is no one in the country who does a better job putting readers inside the minds and locker rooms of their favorite college hockey team. Hate to doom the guy to a lifetime career at The Herald, but I hope he hangs around forever. 2 Quote
AlphaMikeFoxtrot Posted May 2, 2016 Posted May 2, 2016 We basically got a preview of his memoir. Quote
keikla Posted May 2, 2016 Posted May 2, 2016 The big question is whether or not this will top the review of the Olive Garden for most views on the Herald website. That truly is the hallmark for success. 3 Quote

Goon Posted May 3, 2016 Posted May 3, 2016 I agree, Brad is great at his job. He's also really good at snap chat. Ha. I also think that Miller does a good job as well. He covers many sports and does a great job, too. I liked the coverage that the Herald had in the paper during the Frozen Four. Finally, loved the coverage with Phil and Brad during the regional and Frozen Four. Love the post game video. Quote

dagies Posted May 4, 2016 Posted May 4, 2016 You think we're not lucky to have Brad Schlossman covering UND hockey? http://apsportseditors.org/newsletter/grand-forks-heralds-schlossman-wins-under-30000-beat-writing/ Quote Brad Elliott Schlossman of the Grand Forks (N.D.) Herald won first place in the Associated Press Sports Editors 2015 contest in Beat Writing for the 30,000 and under circulation category. 2 Quote
Popular Post UND85 Posted May 4, 2016 Popular Post Posted May 4, 2016 Each year when we wonder who will sign early I often wonder how long it will be until Brad is offered and accepts another position somewhere else. If he ever had to fill out a time card for the Herald one would wonder if he is ever off the clock. I am also thankful for his dedication and his insight in what he does. There is a reason why fans of other hockey programs follow him and often he is the first read of the day for many across the World. Thank you Mr. Schlossman! 5 Quote
