No, but at least they aren't giving jobs to the highest bidder. Which is what you suggested.

But that how it worked for Engelstad, and no one is bitching about the Brien logo.  That's how it works at most of the power programs.  Nike's gifts to Oregon have strings attached such as use of an array of bizarre Nike uniforms.

Was Ralph Engelstad ever appointed President of UND? Or the leader of the UND Alumni Association? No.

As far as UND choosing to use the Internet as the only way to vote:

According to the PEW Research center 41% of those age 65 or old do not use the internet at all, 53% do not have broadband access at home, and 23% do not use cell phones.

Seem like someone inside should have thought about an equitable voting system - and no expecting everyone to have Internet access should not be assumed.

And that's not the only reason why online voting is a joke.

those without internet were given other options- I don't recall how it was planned, but accommodations were made.

This won't be popular... ;)

I personally think the University is for the students and (at least in hindsight) wouldn't be particularly bothered if only students had been allowed to choose the new nickname; alums and friends could have kept following the teams or moved on as they saw fit, but our time for being in charge is in the past.

Of course, that doesn't fit with the economic reality of schools needing to engage friends and alums for tickets and donations, so instead we have a voting pool in which current students are actually greatly outnumbered by other stakeholders. It will be hard to complain if the students really do have a different preference than the rest of the constituents, but are sufficiently more engaged such that they manage to propel it to victory.

You might want to tell all the empty seats at sporting events that the University is for students.

You are conflating arguments again.  Engelstad had power and strings with his donation.  Are you disagreeing with that?

T Boone Pickens has Oklahoma St's President at his beck and call.  So does Phil Knight at Oregon.

You may be right so I'd love to know who those "other options" were accounted for and were able to meet the timelines given for voting.

My parents, in their 80s and Champion Club members, don't have a clue about the internet.  They have an IPAD and WiFi set up by their grandkids, but don't have a clue how to do anything on the internet, like pay bills.  They still run to Hugo's to pay bills as they save on postage.  They did not vote as UND effectively disenfranchised them.
