Oxbow6 Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 Kelley waved a magic wand thanks to some t-shirts and - POOF! - a $100K a year "diversity" job was instantly created. Meeting with tribal leaders regarding saving the school name? Meh...too much work. "We have a winner!" Quote

Meeting with tribal leaders regarding saving the school name? Meh...too much work. He had to hire somebody. There was no way he was going to deal with such controversial issue. Hire somebody and hide behind them. I'm sure it's even in the job description. 1 Quote

Chewey Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 I loved the name as much as anyone. But candidly, I'm glad its gone. I'm tired of the nonsense. Its the world we live in. The Washington Redskins are going to be able to hold on for awhile. The FSU Seminoles are going to be able to hold on for awhile. But the world is not moving towards use of american indian names as mascots/team nicknames. Its moving against them, and you have as much a chance to stop it as you do stopping the tide. We make the world in which we live either by our action or inaction/passivity. Leigh Jeanotte, et al certainly adjusted things by their action. The way to squelch the nonsense is not to just get tired of it and let the Leigh Jeanottes of the world have their way. One has to be just as vocal, just as passionate and just as persistent in one's opposition. As a matter of intellect, rational thought and common sense and truth, the antis had absolutely no basis except for what the "let's move on", "we're just tired", and "we're doing nothing" (insert Conrad, Dorgan, etc.) crowds gave them. 1 Quote
iramurphy Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 They got a standing O from the entire student sections This is from the students who aren't clever enough to yell anything but "who's he, he sucks sh.." during introductions and one of whom repeated the FSU QB quote during a moment of silence for a guys father who had passed away. A standing ovation from these folks means nothing. I'm not defending Kelley, but these clowns don't impress me. Quote

A standing ovation from these folks means nothing. I'm not defending Kelley, but these clowns don't impress me. Don't paint the entire student section with a broad brush because of one idiot. The following night the students voiced support for coach Montgomery. Go ahead and rip them for the intro b.s., but not the moment of silence ruined by one idiot. I respect and usually agree with your opinion on most matters on this board, but you overstepped here. Quote
Cratter Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 Whos he, he sucks sh.....has been going on for over a decade. Blame the older generations. Quote

Goon Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 Whos he, he sucks sh.....has been going on for over a decade. Blame the older generations. That was going on when I was in college, back in the 1990's. Quote
CMSioux Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 Oh and one other thing that you and others seem to fail to realize. Even if UND would have gotten full support from both tribes and Kelley would have spear headed the effort, the FACT is that the Big Sky, and other conferences we were looking at joining (Summit/MVFC), had an issue with our native American name. Having the Fighting Sioux name after the NCAA came out against them in 2005 became a problem for many Universities. For a school that just reclassified to D1 and in search of conference affiliation, it became a big problem. Did they have the problem before or after the NCAA sent letters telling them to have a problem with it? 2 Quote
CMSioux Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 That was going on when I was in college, back in the 1990's. Actually it was being shouted in the 70s - right after they stopped holding up copies of a newspaper and pretending to read it while the other team was being introduced. 1 Quote

Goon Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 Actually it was being shouted in the 70s - right after they stopped holding up copies of a newspaper and pretending to read it while the other team was being introduced. So, we all to blame? Quote

MafiaMan Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 ...holding up copies of a newspaper and pretending to read it while the other team was being introduced. I tried bringing that back in 1989-1990...it worked for a game or two but I guess my fellow students liked saying s**t better. Quote
dlsiouxfan Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 I'm no fan of Dr. Kelly, but if these students have an issue with the loss of the Fighting Sioux nickname shouldn't they have had a "Fire Stenehjem" banner instead? I mean he is the one who actually negotiated the settlement agreement with the NCAA. I understand that would be pretty inconvenient for the one kid since he's head of the college Republicans but he should at least be accurate when assigning responsibility for the loss of the nickname. Not that the pro-nickname supporters have ever concerned themselves with accuracy. 1 Quote
Fetch Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 Your right on about the AG but State wide (especially Fargo) no one cares but he did a terrible job for UND during the BS with the NCAA & got little of the blame --& in general I think he is good for ND & I think he was a UND grad ? ? ? Quote
Cratter Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 I tried bringing that back in 1989-1990...it worked for a game or two but I guess my fellow students liked saying s**t better. And in the early 2000s when a certain president wrote the students a letter telling them to make the arena more family friendly...also only lasted a few games. Quote
MafiaMan Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 Not that the pro-nickname supporters have ever concerned themselves with accuracy. Yes, thankfully the nickname is gone so that ISIS won't attack Grand Forks, UND won't be closed permanently, and whatever else was supposed to happen if the Sioux name wasn't scrapped. Whew! 1 Quote

For a school that just reclassified to D1 and in search of conference affiliation, it became a big problem. More FACTs is: The Commissioner of that joke league-the league which caused all of our opinions on how to handle the name issue to change because of fear of rejection by them- proclaimed that he was told to publically state that the league would kinda feel negative about the name if it was not removed and that something bad could happen. ...How is Florida State and Illinois doing with the with the problems this is causing them??? 1 Quote
