I've been harping about the really bad FCS (in reality D2) teams we have coming up.   I would love to drop garbage teams and stay away Valpo, Drake, LIU, St. Thomas,  Mississippi Valley State, etc.   It seems that we get some of these teams every year.

Schmidt not happy with the 2nd teamers, and some of the DBs notably.

Upholding the standard a theme as well.  

If they win 63 rip but lose a starter we are pissed.  They pull Jerry and a few others and get shutout the 2nd half and it looks less dominant we are also pissed.

I'll take the 4 FBS road games any day over this crap......watch all 4 on TV...win a couple..win em all...fun games...probably no blowouts...make couple milly

Starters did what they were supposed to do against an abysmal team, backups didn't.   Do we have some depth issues?

Playing as many young backups as possible is a strategy for portal retention next year as well as depth this year. The backups would probably look better sprinkled in with a few starters helping experience wise. No harm playing them as much as  possible except for butt hurt gamblers

I would assume with the 5 for 5 now being a thing they played a lot more true freshman than they usually would? It appeared to me after LIUs first touchdown there wasn’t many players on the two deep on the field.

The play calling completely changes when you’re up 42-0 for multiple reasons. Giving up those td drives is the concerning part as those defenders will need to play a bunch as the season goes on. 

Good to dominate the first half! 

On to next Saturday - last home game until October. Hoping for a bigger crowd.

Game 1 left me with two giant concerns, which clearly is shared with everyone. Kicking and Backup QB. Both were incredibly disappointing to watch. 

I don't remember a game where they pulled the 1's as soon as they did. Which I loved. My question would be was the % breakdown between 2's, 3's, 4's in the second half? Especially defensively. Not overly concerned with it. 

Two non-returning starters that really deserve to be pointed out. Ethan Boll and Brody Thornton. They were good. Thornton will be an All-American.

I was thinking about this too. With redshirting being done, and assuming we are up 30 I see no reason why Schmidt would just run the backups. I think teams are going to cover the spread more than usually now.

Boll and Thornton - those were probably my biggest questions on the starting D as to whether there would be issues, and since I couldn't watch because of the "technical difficulties" I'm glad to hear that they were strong.  Now I'm worried about our depth after the second half although I think that full backup units versus sprinkling in with experience can have a pretty big impact.  

Should be able to get a lot of backups experience next weekend with St Thomas since they don't appear to be very strong after last night vs Winona State.

Good news - Jerry showed immediately and sustainably that he's on another level and LIU didn't even deserve to be on the field at the same time as him. I'm glad they took him out immediately since that is something that didnt happen enough in the past. I hope he doesnt see the 2nd half of a game until Nebraska. 

Bad news - JTJ still not being able to even really show flashes of capability against that bad of a team means he just doesnt have it and they need to move him to QB3. That also means this team is insanely reliant on Jerry staying healthy. Yes JTJ was working with some backup OL, RBs and WRs, but not entirely. And honestly, even with that, UND's 2s should still be far better than LIU starters and also, he should easily be able to make more plays all on his own...but he didnt and just apparently can't. Experiment over. They need to give Sulik a shot at 2QB next week when UND is up by 3-4 scores. UNDs OL and RBs are top tier, but a 1 dimensional offense will not win you games, so a solid qb2 is needed badly at this point because the season might be riding on it. 

White pill - the 2nd stringers will be fine, depth will be fine (other than maybe QB), and this team will be SOLID when Jerry is healthy. A lot of the 2nd stringers got their first snaps in yesterday, some of which at an entirely new position or team or college football all together, and now they got their jitters out of their system in a blow out win instead of later in a tight game. I think we will see a lot better performance from the 2nd stringers next week, especially when the floor is all theirs in the 2nd half.

When Liu had an offensive pass interference 0n 3rd down and it was incomplete why did UND take the penalty , it would have been 4th and 10, instead 3rd and 20 and they get a first down
