Popular Post mygarske Posted 7 hours ago Popular Post Posted 7 hours ago GF Herald story about Zellers Natty run with Shattuck in 2024. https://www.grandforksherald.com/sports/und-hockey/will-zellers-once-had-an-unforgettable-national-title-winning-performance-in-vegas He's a tough bastard. Quotes from Shattuck Coach Ward are incredible! If you follow Ward's comments, that guy LOVES Johnny Toews, talks about his grit & gamer mentality. To hear the same things about Zellers is high praise from one of best coaches in all of hockey, at any level. "It was a courageous effort," Ward said. "He earned the respect of everyone with our program and everyone who knows him. And he didn't want to do it to show off. He wanted to win it for the guys. The Sioux have themselves a guy who knows how to win and wants to win. He's a gamer." Zellers led the tournament in goals (nine) and points (15) as Shattuck won the national title in City National Arena, the Vegas Golden Knights' practice rink. "He's a big-time, big-game player," Ward said. "It doesn't faze him. He can feel other people's anxiety, and he preys on them." 3 2 Quote

I will be the jerk that fact checks him though as he has Karl beating Niagara, then Maine, then BC in 2000. Karl was actually the backup to Andy Kollar at Mariucci arena as he was still recovering from a concussion. One other memory from the 2000 West Regional in Minneapolis ... Day 1 was two games, and it was COLD COLD COLD - as in too cold - in the arena. And the ice seemed slow. But on day 2, it was "normal". UND played day two, and the ice seemed "normal". I've always wondered if we got a slight favor from the ice crew ,,, (shakes off) must be my imagination. Quote

Thanks for the replay, Blackheart. Timely. Couple of thoughts: Kudos to Bucky fans for standing strong and loud long after the game was basically out of reach, even giving a standing O as the clock ran out. And that wasn’t a Cinderella team, having won the title the year before. Phil Sykes. Any other Sioux play in 3 championship games, as he did? 1 Quote

Cary Eades is an obvious choice, and my first guess would be that he played in all three games. I know Frank Burggraf was a senior in '82 as well. For some reason, however, I don't remember him playing in the '82 championship game. I don't know if he was injured or not. I also think Mike Stone was a senior that year, but for some reason I thought he was one of those guys who played at UND for a year or two, then left, and then came back, and I'm too lazy to look up to see whether he was there for all three years. It would have to be someone from that time frame, however, since we don't have three championship games in four years at any other point in time. Quote

If the rules on fighting weren't so strict, I think Mike Commodore would have wiped the ice with him. That brought back memories so I looked for that game via @Blackheart on youtube, and sure enough its still there with Kollar getting steam rolled late in the 2nd, and Commodore wanting to kill the guy that dipped his shoulder into him. The Blais interview between the second and third period is just classic Blais. There is also a @MafiaMan sighting live and in person from that game next to a gal in a Michigan jersey of all things. 1 2 Quote
