So UND, having a storied tradition & a facility that surpasses all others, can't compete with MI on the recruiting trail for the bluest of blue chips?

I find that comment a little surprising.  When has UND outrecruited Mich, BU, and BC for No. 1 draft picks east of the western shore of Lake Michigan?

I didn't mention BU or BC.

We haven’t realistically had much luck recruiting kids from Ontario in general at least in recent years. We will still try to recruit them, but I don’t even flinch when they commit elsewhere. Like I think I can count on one hand the number of guys from Ontario on the team in the last few years. Michigan has the benefit of proximity. And a lot of Ontario kids are probably wanting more of a big school/big city. 40% of Canada’s population lives in Ontario, it’s much more urban than Western Canada.

If we are going to get any “blue chips” they’ll be from Western Canada or the US.

Makes sense, thanks for the reasoned response. I was looking more at the totality of MI's recruits, from the NTDP & USHL, & it seems like they lock down more 1st-round forwards from those leagues than UND does. McGroarty is a good example; he's from Lincoln, NE, closer to us than MI. And to your point, UND doesn't necessarily get the much sought-after Western Canadian boys; Celebrini (Vancouver, BC) opted for BU. Don't know if UND even tried to get him.

One thing I feel the staff has had a lapse in, they don't recruit during the season on weekends. They rely on scouts, contacts, video, etc. When is the last time you see one of the coaches miss a weekend game for a recruiting trip? That used to happen all the time. Now we seem to rely on our history, etc. We have (4) coaches now. I'd be fine if Simpson missed a game here or there to go recruit.

Just my 2 cents. Curious what others think.

McGroarty isn’t really a great example. He was born in Lincoln, as his dad used to coach the Lincoln Stars, but he basically grew up and played all his organized hockey in Michigan.

No. Maybe here and there…but not like they do. They also have nice facilities, tradition, as well as some other things. :)

I've been waiting for someone to say this, so thank you hahaha. I'm not allowed to be positive about recruiting ;)

Just for the curious: 88 days till the puck drops….

At 88 days, that's not for the curious, it's for lonely, pathetic, idle losers, i.e., most of us.

We're not lonely; we're here together.

The rest? No comment.

I’ve been to Ann Arbor and have seen their facilities. Top tier. Better than ours?…no. But the campus and the city itself is unreal. Coupled with the big program environment (football, basketball etc) just a tough place to recruit against. Add in the fact Ann Arbor is 20 minutes away from Plymouth and that creates a whole new issue. Odds are stacked against us. But we get a few blue chips (typically local or former NHL/UND players kids) and we backfill with late bloomers and we do just fine.

I agree with you about the campus and Ann Arbor, but Yost is kind of a dump. It is no where close to REA unless you like nostalgia. Yost is like Wrigley Field--it is cool, but very old and not really very nice.

It isn’t new. But it’s cool, I was there last year and there’s definitely a cool feel to the whole place.

With August 1st right around the corner and the fun begins:

… and three days after August 1, when Michigan and Minnesota have a few commitments, even if they aren’t on Schlossman’s list, people are going to freak out.  Maybe that is why Schlossman is going with 30 names, so there will be plenty left on the list when people are in panic mode.

This list is a combination of the best-available players nationally with a lean toward traditional National Collegiate Hockey Conference recruiting grounds and players from the area who could be notable prospects.

Two years ago, the No. 1 player on the Herald’s recruiting watch list was Macklin Celebrini. He won the Hobey Baker Award as a freshman and signed with the San Jose Sharks.

Last year, the top player was James Hagens, who will be a freshman at Boston College this season and could contend for the Hobey.

Celebrini and Hagens were no-brainers. This year, it’s different. There is not a consensus No. 1 prospect and scouts' lists appear to vary significantly.

The article has a short write-up on each of the 30 players.

I wonder how many games he played on Vanc. Island growing up as opposed to a ferry ride.

I know there is at least one aditional West Fargo kid that we hopefully have on our radar.

NIL strongly supported by the most passionate, and arguably the largest, hockey fanbase in the NCAA trumps all that. Tonight 1883 along with Berry and players will have a gathering open to the public 5:30 - 7:30. Bring your friends

The Zajic kid is fantastic with the puck....fantastic.  I think a potential first rounder when he fills out his frame in the weight room.

Another kid Brad didn't list to look out for is Cooper Soller.  Later 08 birthday so will only be a Sophomore this year, but the hockey sense and skating ability were among the best on a good Shattuck team.
