It’s a reasonable want. Not sure we’ll ever be able to recruit how we did in the mid to late 2000s (those years were fun). But again, it’s a reasonable want. I always have to say this on this board, I do like some of the recruits we have coming in I do.

Agreed. I really like our pipeline AND we need to win more battles for the highest-end recruits. It’s both/and, not either/or.

No, no. I'm not arguing that. OF COURSE, I want more of the highest end.

Irish quoted a tweet that is talking about a kid who is 10 years old. 10. That's why I asked if he was serious.

The post about recruiting the 10 year old was clearly supposed to be a joke and something for us to laugh at.  Guess some missed the joke

If that was indeed a joke, I definitely missed it lol. That's precisely why I asked if he was being serious!

100% Some blue chips on those teams at the time that’s for sure.

2005-2006 had six first rounders: stafford; zajac; lee; oshie; finley; and toews, and chorney (36th overall) and smaby (41st) weren’t too far behind.

Looking back, recruiting is cyclic.

That 2000-2010 era the first rounders were American and going the college route.
When first rounders become more Canadian or Euro/Russian it's more MJ.

Hockey (& other programs) to have Alston Awards now:

https://www.grandforksherald.com/sports/und-hockey/und-plans-to-spend-nearly-1-million-annually-in-alston-awards-to-athletes

Aug. 1 is the opening day for college hockey programs to offer high school juniors. UND can now inform potential recruits of the 701 Award.

"I know some programs are already doing it, the Big Ten, and others at their own pace," hockey coach Brad Berry said. "A big thank you has to go out to Bill Chaves and Erik Martinson for diving into it and making it happen.

"You can bring someone to campus and you can show them what you can offer them as far as development, with your program and academically. When you're (recruiting) against some other top-end schools with their budget and arsenal, it's a situation where we now have this and are on pace with Big Ten schools and others who have it."

There are more US born first rounders now than ever, at least higher end first rounders. Canada has always dominated the first round. I may have missed the point here however.

You take a 1st rounder when you can, any team would and yes the '16 team had BB in 2016 and won a Natty... BUT if you review memory lane and UND's history in 1st rounders: Sanderson, Pinto, Bernard-Docker, Nelson, Oshie, Zajac, Stafford, Lee, Finley etc. = No national title :-(

I do believe UND needs to get more commits out of USNDPT team though, 100%

Schmaltz was on the ‘16 team too. The fact we didn’t win a natty wasn’t an issue with the players during the 2000s, nor was it a Hak issue. Those teams were loaded. It’s a one and done tourney..you need a very good team and a decent amount of luck.

2016 team had 11 players spend time in the NHL.

Not bad.

Spehar (Sioux Falls AAA)

  • Schools follows: UND
  • Rumors / Notes: Dad played for Minnesota. High Muskegon draft pick. Playing in 5 Nations Tournament.

Sam Spehar's dad Dave ushered to a "seat" at the 1999 Final Five, courtesy Chad Mazurak. :D

And Sam, if you're reading this, be kind to the old man with it. He's still your father. :)

EDIT: I just realized that's Jackson Blake's dad helping Dave Spehar find the bottom of the player's bench. :D

SECOND EDIT: Just for @geaux_sioux ... look at all the fishbowls!

I saw some Puck Preps screenshots on Twitter the other day that said Hensler’s final 3 are UND, Michigan and Wisconsin (not Minnesota). Also gave all 3 schools a 33% chance of getting him so they really went out on a limb there lol.
