It appears to me that Berry has/is handling this like a total pro even though he definitely was not ready to leave. If and when he wants another job in college or the pros I have no doubt he will succeed. Quote

If the only reason to get the hire done this week is because of the transfer portal, then that’s extremely shortsighted. If there’s a coach in the tourney who wants to apply, then interview them when their team is eliminated. Why limit yourself simply because you might miss out on a few players in the short term? Do we want to win next year or the next 10-15 years? Correct, Schlossman putting way too much stock in portal deadline…MN fired their basketball coach weeks ago; Colorado State loses in big dance last night and poof, he is hired by Gophers today. There was obviously an agreement put in place long before this morning for him to be the next Gophers BB coach. It appears this may be the case with UND hockey…this announcement of a new hockey coach appears like it may have been in the works for some time. As for the portal deadline…a simple message to players advisors of “no need to rush; you may make a huge mistake” would sufficiently keep them in place until the end Frozen Four if need be. No player would bolt the place they chose until after knowing the facts; especially if a home run hire is eminent. 4 Quote

But with the hiring window ending 11:55 pm Wed night, it appears that UND wants to get a coach in place by this Thursday; and not wait until after the tournament, which would rule out any coach whose team is currently in the playoffs. burd Posted Monday at 11:56 PM Posted Monday at 11:56 PM Is it a little odd that the app deadline is so soon and just before regionals begin? Almost as if they had someone on line 2. Quote

True, but you don't put a super short window out there unless you have your guy. I've hired many people where HR said I had to post it for a minimum of 7 days. I had my candidate picked before I posted with a 7 day turnaround. Otherwise I posted "until filled" 1 Quote

Two year captain and played a fifth year on a medical redshirt. Played a few years in Europe. Was an assistant and GM/recruiter type for a number of excellent SCSU teams under Motzko before taking the same job at Minnesota. Been on successful WJC staffs. Took the head job at Augustana which started up from scratch and has them competitive instantly. Also worked the alumni to which he has no connection to get a brand new arena. As a person, I’ve met him but don’t know him, but people who do say he’s truly the real deal. Genuine, hard working, salt of the earth guy. He’s from Detroit Lakes and played there in HS so a regional connection. He’s been recruiting the same territory as UND for years. Wife is a UND grad. I’d be shocked if they hired him but if he was offered the job I think he would be silly to say no. If it goes right, that’s an if, this could be a home run and a guy who is at UND for 25 years. His Dad played for Providence and was drafted by the Capitals. Both parents were teachers and his Dad was his HS hockey coach. Very smart, tough hard nosed defenseman. He also played RB in FB. Gained over 1000 yds in both his Jr and Sr seasons. Quick, fast, heavy hitter. He and Reed Manke were key players who led DL to the 2001 state championship. A honor student. Played 3 yrs in USHL for Lincoln, then 4yrs at St. Cloud. Voted A as Soph and C his Jr and Sr years. All WCHA defenseman and I believe he was an academic All-American. Played professional hockey in Norway and Finland before assistant at StCloud then Minn. Hired by Josh Morton to start Augie program and help oversee building their new arena. Watched player interviews. He makes them a bit nervous cuz he is no nonsense and very smart but they respect and like him. Gopher fans want him back. He is a hell of a recruiter. Quiet guy, nice guy. Players will play for him cuz they won’t want to let him down. Excellent teacher. I haven’t asked if he is interested and I won’t. I have no idea if UND is interested in him but he should be considered. 8 Quote
