GoodGood Posted December 18 Posted December 18 Today’s the day we’ve all been waiting for! UND welcomes #6 Alabama to Grand Forks. Going to be an exciting environment in the Betty! 2 Quote
SJHovey Posted December 18 Posted December 18 Should be fun. Wish I could go. I remember back in December, 2001, when Roy Williams brought his #2 (I think) ranked Kansas Jayhawks to the new Ralph for a game against UND. It was the same sort of deal as this Alabama game. Williams had promised the Boschee kid out of Valley City that if he committed to Kansas, Roy would try to schedule a game in North Dakota. During the player introductions, as I recall, on the new overhead video board in the Ralph, they ran a video montage that consisted of a few different UND basketball highlights (probably mostly three point buckets) interspersed with very short clips from The Wizard of Oz. The montage ended, of course, with the clip of Dorothy saying, "Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore." Pretty decent level trolling, I thought, for a new arena crew. Even Williams seemed to get a chuckle out of it. Then, shortly before the first 4 minute timeout, UND made a bucket to go up by one. During the timeout, the crowd was pretty fired up. The student section started chanting, "We want Duke," who was #1 at the time. In retrospect it was good the trolling was gotten out of the way early, since I seem to recall it was a 30+ point blow out loss, but good times. 4 Quote
FSSD Posted December 18 Posted December 18 Still say it was a big miss not putting this inside the Ralph. The basketball program should be looking to bringing teams to the Ralph much like the Pentagon in SF does for one weekend a year. Maybe it is an event the 1883 collective can sponsor and they can use the revenue off that. I am not sure what the number look like, but you can go down to Sioux Falls and see what they do.. I think the City of Sioux Falls and local businesses kick in some money because of the local revenue it generates. You can have it in early fall so weather is not an issue. I think the Pentagon event started off as exhibition games. 1 Quote

If I recall, the Ralph doesn't have the temp court anymore and Alabama required the game to be played on a visitor court as the Ralph would be considered a neutral site. At the end of the year apparently neutral court wins hurt your seedings 4 Quote

But, the basketball program and local community need to start looking for ways to elevate the basketball program. SDSU has been included in the Stanford event for years. They use it to help sell the program. The mindset needs to change if they want to catch SDSU. https://www.sanfordsports.com/blog/community/the-field-of-68-opening-day-showcase The Field of 68, a college basketball media network bringing basketball fans premier sports content, is partnering with Sanford Sports and the Sanford Pentagon to launch a new, innovative event on the opening day of the college basketball season. On Nov. 4, the Sanford Pentagon will host ‘The Field of 68 Opening Day Showcase,’ an event featuring matchups between six of the best programs in college basketball. The inaugural event features the following matchups: College of Charleston vs. Southern Illinois - 11 a.m. CT Saint Louis vs. Santa Clara - 2 p.m. CT McNeese State vs. South Dakota State - 5 p.m. CT “This is something we felt as though we needed because of how difficult it is for all of us to schedule quality opponents. It gives us a neutral site opportunity against a high-quality Quad 1 or Quad 2 opponent,” College of Charleston athletic director Matt Roberts said. “I’m really hoping this spurs others to follow and join us in the future.” Quote

He played 3 seasons for NDSU and then transferred to Alabama before last year. UND reached out to Alabama about getting a game here for him close to home and they got a deal done. 2 Quote

Win for everyone (minus Alabama if they get stuck here tonight....) 1 2 Quote

I've been looking for years and they are impossible to find. I’ve seen one singular photo and it’s been years since I saw it. Also, being so old, the resolution was pretty minimal. I vaguely remember it being a photo from the upper bowl giving a general view of the arena and atmosphere. I did a quick search to no avail. I feel like I saw it on AP or Getty Images, but again, this was years ago. Quote
SIOUXFAN97 Posted December 18 Posted December 18 you would think that photo photo would be somehwere in side the betty? great photo Quote

The idea came from me, through a Golfing Buddy Malcom Rodacher. Malcom's daughter went to College in Nebraska, and he attended a Football game against KU in Lincoln where they did this. As someone also said this was not new to KU, other opponents have done similar. When he told me of the story, I relayed that to Paul Collins our UND Associate AD at the time and he agreed it would be a fun stunt. The REA did a fantastic job with the simple and plain KU introductions (obviously Jeff got a standing ovation). Then REA did an abbreviated light show, Vegas Style, and Played the Wizard of Oz Video on the Scoreboards, ending with Dorthy saying "Toto, I don't think we are in Kansas anymore" Roy Williams and the Crowd did have a good laugh, and enjoyed it. We were up for a while, then came crashing to earth, we had a good squad with Jerome Beasley, Jeff Brandt and others, but lost 108-77 in 2001. The package was set up as a home and home, UND played at Fog Allen and lost there also 92-61 in 2000. 2 Quote

I am not sure we sell a capacity Ralph crowd for a BB game now, even if it is Alabama. It will be fun to see a packed Betty. Need some juice back in the sports that use the Betty. Quote

Anyone else having problems locating this game on Hulu? Quote
