AJS Posted December 19, 2024 Posted December 19, 2024 Let's talk LB. The fact is you'll need 1/2 the amount as last year. Clearly, you cannot have 6 LB's as part of the incoming class. That band-aid needs to be ripped off now. Tough situation for the players, but it's just numbers. Ideally, wouldn't mind 1 or 2 others from the returning roster enter. Outside of the LB position, I hope nobody else enters. 2 Quote

I would expect a number of the LB's to leave, but also look for some of the 6'3"-6'4" LB's to get a look at potentially filling an EDGE role. All depends on the skill set/body type and how they fit into those ILB and EDGE positions. But yes, I'd expect some current LB's to leave and for us to recruit a few less LB's each year. 3 Quote

Given the 4-2-5 scheme, it is possible some of those players may have the ability to switch to safety, edge or even a heavy nickel. But you are right, 6 dedicated LB's is a big number. 1 2 Quote

But ya, going from a 4 LB defense to 2 LB D and a Nickel probably will cause a roster kerfuffle. Quote
The Sicatoka Posted December 19, 2024 Posted December 19, 2024 To my eye UND LBs have looked like other teams' safeties ... but way slower. Quote
FSSD Posted December 19, 2024 Posted December 19, 2024 My question is what is the body type of the "2" LB in this system. I assume that they would fit the mold of ILB versus the OLB. Otherwise you would have teams loading up the power run game again. Does anyone know? Quote

Very similar body type/skill set to that of the ILB’s we are used to seeing in the 3-4. Maybe a little more athletic to get to runs that bounce outside the EDGE when they spill pullers, but you’ll still need guys that can fill on inside runs. 1 Quote

Whether we were in a nickel 3-3-5 or 3-4, or some other exotic alignment...we failed to get enough size, speed and technique on the field, and it's been woefully apparent for awhile now! IMO changing to a 4-2-5 alone will not fix that issue...but it will buy Coach Schmidt some time in the court of public opinion based on fan reaction I see... Alabama ran a 3-4 defense under Nick Saban...technically Georgia is too...but what a 3-4 was 20 years ago isn't the same as it is now. Any scheme can be successful if you have the right players to run it. Quote

It is still used by some of the top teams in the FBS and more than a handful of NFL teams. What base defense you run doesn't really matter if you don't have the players to run it and/or they aren't fundamentally sound. UND hasn't been able to consistently get the athletes they need to run it. Quote

The 3-4 is just a convenient boogeyman. 1 2 Quote

Sioux94 Posted December 19, 2024 Posted December 19, 2024 We would be salivating if we ever got a transfer like this. Hopefully with the new staff we can get some higher end potential portal transfers. Quote
