Behrns was an interesting guy. He was a great recruiter. His assistants at the time didn’t have a lot of D2 experience. UND recruited a number of very good skill players (Willis Jacob, Tracy Martin, Milsen Jones) and won recruiting battles against NDSU.  They recruited a number of D3 guys that looked great on paper especially linemen who couldn’t move. I thought Dave Olson and Richman were pretty good coaches but we just didn’t have the team talent or depth. Tom Clifford used to stop in my office now and then while he was waiting for George Schubert to play handball. We had a conversation about our FB struggles and I brought that up. (I also told Pat the same thing after he was let go and he agreed). More than anything, Behrns had lost to the Bison every year after his initial win.
After UND he was an assistant at Utah State and eventually HC at UNO where he had some very good teams.

Having lived through the Behrns regime and looking back I think he was just too young and/or inexperienced for the job.  He was 30 when he took over.   He was a micromanager and wouldn't let his assistants run their position groups.  We had mostly good assistants when he started but they all left.  Richman and Olson came in the second wave and were good coaches along with a couple more but there were definitely some guys in over their heads.

From the time I started to when I finished 4 years later, Pat was the only one left on the staff.  That includes assistant coaches and athletic trainers.  All gone.

Bubba has lost the program, completely. Everyone knows it. The ceiling next year will be .500, but that seems unlikely. We can talk in absolutes. Burn the program to the ground, Bubba!

Go team GPA!

"A" by "A".  It's catchy!!

Would people be in favor of giving the keys to Fruechte?

Of anyone on the current staff, he would be the one.  Least amount of time in the program and the freshest look of outside ideas.  How many UND coaches have ever had FBS and NFL experience?

If you're willing to give it to Fruechte then you must be willing to give it to Danny

I certainly was last year. He may be even more valuable now after some time at SDSU.

Is there someone on the staff now that would be a likely candidate to move up to DC? Flueger? Dosch? With all the bring back Freund talk, would Pawlak be a candidate?
is there someone who could turn the defense around?

There’s no one on the current staff that could turn the program around. Dosch is the same mold as Schweigert, both leadership-wise and scheme-wise. Hard no thank you. He came out of “retirement” to coach a position group because nobody else wanted to join this decrepit staff.

UND needs a complete reboot, meaning opening up all positions, and hiring the best candidate, but preferably that being somebody who has not recently been associated with UND (or ever been), and is on the rise. Likely a relatively young coach, looking to eventually move up to FBS.

No one internally would be able to turn this defense around.

The main attributes need to be young, motivated, winning program. Someone that exudes confidence. I want the next coaches goal to elevate and move up within five years.

• Current D2 coaches

• Coordinator from the Dakota schools (not Landry / Freund)

I agree.

Yes. Needs to be someone that plans to be gone within 5 years. (Moving up)

That process has worked excellent for NDSU (Bohl leaves for FBS, Klieman leaves for FBS, Entz leaves for FBS, and the program keeps on rolling to new heights…)

They had that with DeBoer last time. Hopefully they can make the right decision this time

Any coach on staff that watched this meltdown the past 7 games and didn’t call anyone out including each other, smash a few clip boards and make some changes doesn’t deserve anything.

MN player of the year, Wisconsin player of the year, Michigan player of the year, state champions, all state players, state champion wrestlers, best receiver in MV, FBS players on and on and this is the product. Somebody please call Trey Feeney because he looks like a genius right now.
