His assistants at the time didn’t have a lot of D2 experience. UND recruited a number of very good skill players (Willis Jacob, Tracy Martin, Milsen Jones) and won recruiting battles against NDSU. They recruited a number of D3 guys that looked great on paper especially linemen who couldn’t move. I thought Dave Olson and Richman were pretty good coaches but we just didn’t have the team talent or depth. Tom Clifford used to stop in my office now and then while he was waiting for George Schubert to play handball. We had a conversation about our FB struggles and I brought that up. (I also told Pat the same thing after he was let go and he agreed). More than anything, Behrns had lost to the Bison every year after his initial win. After UND he was an assistant at Utah State and eventually HC at UNO where he had some very good teams. Having lived through the Behrns regime and looking back I think he was just too young and/or inexperienced for the job. He was 30 when he took over. He was a micromanager and wouldn't let his assistants run their position groups. We had mostly good assistants when he started but they all left. Richman and Olson came in the second wave and were good coaches along with a couple more but there were definitely some guys in over their heads. From the time I started to when I finished 4 years later, Pat was the only one left on the staff. That includes assistant coaches and athletic trainers. All gone. 2 Quote

The ceiling next year will be .500, but that seems unlikely. We can talk in absolutes. Burn the program to the ground, Bubba! Go team GPA! "A" by "A". It's catchy!! 4 Quote

zonadub Posted November 23, 2024 Posted November 23, 2024 Is there someone on the staff now that would be a likely candidate to move up to DC? Flueger? Dosch? With all the bring back Freund talk, would Pawlak be a candidate? is there someone who could turn the defense around? Quote
Midwestern Hawk Posted November 23, 2024 Posted November 23, 2024 Coaching doesn’t matter. It’s all about recruiting…;) See Indiana…. 2 Quote

Dosch is the same mold as Schweigert, both leadership-wise and scheme-wise. Hard no thank you. He came out of “retirement” to coach a position group because nobody else wanted to join this decrepit staff. UND needs a complete reboot, meaning opening up all positions, and hiring the best candidate, but preferably that being somebody who has not recently been associated with UND (or ever been), and is on the rise. Likely a relatively young coach, looking to eventually move up to FBS. 1 3 Quote

nodakvindy Posted November 23, 2024 Posted November 23, 2024 Need a fresh start and injection of new ideas. If Freuchte isn't the guy would hope he is still on staff. Focus needs to be on recruiting and developing QB and upgrading defense. Quote

Dude is so crazy energetic and only 34. Wasn't sure if it was going to work or not but after being horrible, ASU is now 9-2 this year and the best team they hsve had in 10 years. 6 Quote
MinnDak Posted November 23, 2024 Posted November 23, 2024 Any coach on staff that watched this meltdown the past 7 games and didn’t call anyone out including each other, smash a few clip boards and make some changes doesn’t deserve anything. 3 Quote

Popular Post sioux24/7 Posted November 24, 2024 Popular Post Posted November 24, 2024 So who would UND hire? - Eric Schmidt - 1st year as DC at San Diego State. Currently they’re 3-8, giving up 29.45ppg and 422.9 yards per game. Not great, but 1st year as DC there. - Danny Freund - 1st year as Co-OC at SDSU but not the primary play caller. Offense is averaging 36.58ppg. No clue how credit he’s due, if any. He’s my guy but understand the skepticism. - Isaac Fruechte - 1st year as OC here. Think he’s done a decent to good job. Offense is averaging 30.83ppg. People aren’t a fan of his QB choice. I think he will be a successful coach going forward but not sure it’s the right time to be the head coach. - Tony Annese - Ferris State head coach, #1 team in D2. 132-21 record but he’s 63 years old. Maybe his son Steve? Not sure how much influence he has had in their success. - Tyler Roehl - if you can’t beat them, hire them? I know he’s now at Iowa State but many years in the NDSU program and knows how to win. Many voiced their opinion for him to take over after Entz left. Many also wanted him canned. I’d say this one’s unlikely. - Luke Schleussner - 2nd year as OC at Idaho, was our OC last year of Muss. Known as a great recruiter. Idaho is averaging 28.08ppg this year and 32.31 last year. - Josh Davis - 1st year as OC at USD, was previously at SDSU as the pass game coordinator. Averaging 37ppg. - Travis Johansen - 6th season as USD’s DC. Holding teams to 14.94ppg. Was previously the head coach at Grand View (NAIA) where he had a record of 61-11. - Jesse Bobbit - 2nd season as SDSU’s DC. Held teams to 12.42ppg this year and 9.27ppg last year. An SDSU alum with previous coaching stop at Washington State as a grad assistant and then quality control coach. I am sure there are many others but I’m more interested in talking about who rather than talking about Bubba right now. We will see if this is even necessary this year but this thread and the need for a new head coach is not going to die just because the athletic department says Bubba isn’t leaving. 9 Quote
AJS Posted November 24, 2024 Posted November 24, 2024 @sioux24/7 great stuff! I’d be most interested in the bottom 4. 3 Quote
