Who would UND hire?

Depends on when. IF they finish with 6 wins or less this year, then I do think it happens after this year. Go with Freund and keep all offensive personnel. If they get to 7 (with or without making playoffs) or more, then put the associate head coach tag on Fruechte and hope next year is Bubba’s last and then hand it over to Fruechte.

Go to a booster lunch - they all have white hair and fat wallets, he's not going anywhere.

So you’re saying the reason Bubba keeps getting extensions is there’s big $ boosters pumping money into the program to keep him? I had just assumed Chaves was incredibly lazy and loved mediocrity. Very happy with this new development.

It’s true though. A lot of influential money backing Bubba despite his mediocre at best coaching ability. Pays to be nice I guess, especially in North Dakota. Comes back to expectations though; being nice is more important than winning (or doing both!) around here I guess

Make Fruechte HC today

This is why our teams are mediocre to average year after year. Why big money boosters embrace this garbage is beyond my understanding.

The person who needs to start caring about excellence in athletics is Armacost. Armacost is the President; it all starts at the top. Until then..........

With these new developments (at least for me), think we’re stuck. Clearly, there would always be a tipping point, but not sure even Bubba would be able to reach that low. Let’s play hypothetical’s. He loses out this year. Would that do it? @UND-FB-FAN , @CMSioux

I think it would. Unlikely of course as based on past results, getting to 6 would be enough. Just needs one more.

My new outlook is hope for the best. 7 wins this year, enough to sell another year to the team ( i.e transfer portal for key players). Key for me is putting Associate Head Coach title on Fruechte after this year.

So people are saying that the second choice OC, less than a year ago, should be made the new HC?

Not advocating, but if something happened, and needed interim, who else? Tom Dosch? Special teams coordinator?

Bubba will keep the job all season, I’m sure of it. At the end of year, though, after the expected occurs (one and done in the playoffs or worse), someone needs to step up and be a leader, whether that’s Bubba resigning, or Chaves and Armacost buying him out.  The latter is very unlikely to happen, so really it again comes back to Bubba. Will he admit it’s time and he can’t get it done? Special teams coordinator or Dosch getting the interim title is pointless, accomplishes nothing in the grand scheme of things.

The program needs a new voice/ leader in the worst way. it’s why the team is a complete shell of itself on the road or in big games / playoffs. No lead voice. No voice of reason. No leadership or direction.

Laughable to think Bubba would ever resign.  Many reasons why with the bottom line first on the list

Agreed, but unless there’s a contract clause I don’t know about, he’s not going anywhere then. Only possible change is Schwenzfeier being the scapegoat and getting replaced.

Otherwise it will be rinse and repeat. “Leaders” (Chaves, Bubba) will cite the new buildings as the reason why 2025 will be different, but again, it won’t be - it’s about the people in the buildings, not the buildings themselves.

Why would he or anyone with a 3 year contract just give it away.

i wouldn’t.

It’s wishful thinking. It won’t happen. Money does trump all. Hence Chaves handing out extensions every year is met with fury on a consistent basis. Participation awards for all here at UND athletics, championships are a pipe dream.

Agreed, that would be giving up a lot of money. Only way it would happen is if he transitions into another role somehow, but doubt they could make that work

Remember if one of the coordinators leaves they will have to give bubba another extension or they can’t recruit another assistant coach or any players  without bubba having at least two more years on his contract.  :)

there are so many reasons given to keep extending bubba.. I have no hope he will ever be gone outside of direct retirement.. I’m sure there is a top 10 list of excuses to keep extending bubba somewhere.
I would think a defensive specialist like bubba would fire himself after having a terrible defense year after year.

also to be clear I’m not advocating for bubbas replacement in the middle of the season and I still hope we somehow catch lightning in the bottle and make a playoff run.

Freund shouldn’t be considered

I dont have a problem with him being considered although not sure he would be a first pick. A year+ at SDSU makes him more qualified.. offense wasn't the problem when he was here either although I have preferred Fruechte's play calling.  Somehow they need to bring in somebody that can actually fix the defense while keeping it up on the offensive side.
