Fat Alberts/Slashdot Pizza had a very limited menu the other day. 5 subs and 2 Pizzas. Owner said that they are struggling and cant afford product. I got a Fat Albert and it didn't even have all the toppings. Hopefully they can pull through.

i do wonder if a second pizza joint went downtown somewhere if that would boost their sales...pete zah (too late)...mikes pizza from east side...slapshot...popolino's?

Hopefully!!! Restaurants are slow right now. I work at Olive Garden and there's days I get called off because we're slow.  I hope people start coming back out to eat soon.

I was out to pick up some take-out Happy Joes on Sat evening and noticed a sign on the door that said that inside dining was stopping at 3pm due to lack of staff.  Tough times for so many places and I hope the locally owned places that have been around so long can pull through.  As a consumer it's tough though, as supporting these places is tougher and tougher with increasing costs elsewhere that chews into the entertainment disposable income.

you wonder if some places will do what Dave Pizza does in Bemidji...open from 4pm to 10pm or something like that.....

they are leaving a ton of money on the table doing that but...it is what it is.

Seriously doubt the owners of Rhombus PIZZA would welcome Italian Moon PIZZA half a block away from their restaurant - no further questions your honor!

Marilyn Hagerty had a column back in 2013 listing restaurants that have come and gone in GF--interesting list:

"Among restaurants that have faded away but are still remembered ... are Main Street, Steak and Stein, Speakeasy, The Beanery, Bonanza, Ponderosa, Shakey's, Boston's, Players, Village Inn, Highway Host, GF Goodribs, Shangri La, Dagwood's, Toppers, Golden Dragon and John Barleycorn. Also, Lola's, 42nd Street Eatery, DeMaggio's, International Restaurant, Applebee's of East Grand Forks, Country Kitchen, Big Al's (Now Al's Grill and Catering), Gas Light, Fire Island.

Also, Grizzly's, Chi Chi's, Bronze Boot, Planet Pizza, Mi Mexico, Suite 49, Capone's, Golden Corral and Branigans."

Some really good ones there.

Then she listed restaurants that have been around for a while and were still here at that time:

"It includes Italian Moon, Paradiso, Bonzer's, Mexican Village, Sanders 1907, Speedway, Whitey's, Del's, Mike's Pizza and Red Pepper."

That list is now shorter by 4...

So, GF has 6 restaurants that have been around 37 years or longer. (25 years or longer when Marilyn did her article in 2013).

Just like we're seeing with Italian Moon/Happy Joe's. Restaurants are a labor of love. Once the owner/founder get old and moves on, the odds of survival greatly dimish. There's only so much juice in the lemon. What once was a prime location isn't anymore. What was once a new building is now outdated.

Places like Bonzers survive partly because it's was passed to the family who grew up in the environment and learned and still have parents as mentors.

Places like Joe Dimagios got bought and turned into a better place with a new name.

Ponderosa turned into BWW.

Then there's every young kid with a dream "I'm gonna start a restaurant or bar." It's the low hanging fruit of business. They are usually not adequately prepared.

The Moon might do better in a different location (Columbia Road) where it is easier to get to from our two major event hubs (REA, Alerus Center).

Probably as long as they want since they own the building.

If mortgages, tenants likely cover the morrgage costs.

But yes missed opportunity costs. Which I'm sure they're aware of.

Place has historical been empty. I don't think many people are banging on their door to rent it out.

My girls grew up with "Grandpa Ken" at the Moon. He'd always bring them an extra small bowl of frosting for their cinnamon bread sticks. The Forks is not losing restaurant...it is losing an institution. Our family has terrific memories of that place before we'd head to UND hockey.

I don't know how many birthday parties I went to at Italian Moon when I was growing up...but it was a lot.  :)
